Is the 2017 GMC Canyon a good car?

Yes — you’re looking at a 4.7/5 user-rated truck with an expert rating of 7.2/10. The standout strength is Technology at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise its attractive design, excellent fuel economy, smooth ride, and stylish interior. The overview also frames it as a midsize pickup that gives you serious towing and hauling capability in a smaller footprint, which makes it appealing if you want truck utility without stepping up to a full-size model.

With 31.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s still room to shop selectively.

Is the 2017 GMC Canyon reliable?

Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. User feedback also points to a truck that feels dependable in daily use, with many drivers highlighting its comfortable ride, good fuel economy, and overall satisfaction over time.

The expert test-drive notes reinforce that sense of durability by describing it as comfortable, capable, and enjoyable to drive, with a powertrain that feels robust and well matched to the truck’s mission. The cost-effectiveness notes also emphasize that the Canyon offers a broad mix of useful capability and variety, which can matter if you plan to keep it for the long haul.

For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about outright dependability and more about whether the truck’s condition and maintenance history justify the asking price.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 GMC Canyon?

At 63.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a hands-on inspection of body panels, interior wear, and any signs of prior repair. Because some listings may have accident histories, condition matters more than mileage alone, especially if you’re comparing similarly priced trucks.

Pay close attention to how the truck was equipped and whether the features you want are actually present on the trim you’re considering.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Denali adds a special chrome mesh grille, 20-inch aluminum wheels, chrome side-step rails, a spray-in bedliner, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a wireless charging pad, a Bose premium sound system, and an 8-inch infotainment screen with navigation. It also includes forward-collision warning and lane-departure warning, while the base setup leaves out several advanced driver-assistance features.
• Powertrain: You can choose a gasoline V6 or a turbocharged diesel 4-cylinder. The V6 makes 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque, while the diesel emphasizes extra towing capability and improved fuel economy.
• Safety package: Denali models come with forward-collision warning and lane-departure warning, and the truck includes a reversing camera, Teen Driver technology, and Rear Seat Reminder. You cannot get blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, or automatic emergency braking.
• Infotainment: IntelliLink uses an 8-inch screen on Denali, with a responsive touchscreen, logical menus, and smartphone projection capability. The system also supports Siri Eyes Free and keeps the main radio and climate controls separate from the screen.
• Fuel efficiency: The V6 is rated at 19 mpg in combined driving, and the diesel improves fuel economy by 4 miles per gallon in combined driving.

Which 2017 GMC Canyon trim should I buy?

The 2017 GMC Canyon is offered in 1 trim level: Denali.

Here's the short version:

Denali is the trim that brings the most visible upgrades, including the chrome-heavy exterior treatment, larger wheels, upgraded cabin materials, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, wireless charging, Bose audio, and the larger 8-inch infotainment screen with navigation. It’s the right pick if you want the most upscale Canyon experience and the most equipment in one package.

Because the data only identifies this trim, there isn’t a lower-trim value play to compare against here.

Safety-package note: Denali adds forward-collision warning and lane-departure warning, but the truck still lacks blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic emergency braking.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 GMC Canyon?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 741 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 63.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $19,784, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 GMC Canyon's resale value?

The current average of $19,958 sits slightly below last year's $20,029.

That small decline suggests the Canyon has been holding value fairly steadily rather than dropping sharply. For a future seller, that’s a useful sign: you’re not looking at a truck with a steep downward price slide, which can help preserve confidence in the used market.

The model’s strong owner satisfaction also supports demand, especially among shoppers who want midsize-truck capability with a more upscale feel. If your truck is well maintained and equipped with desirable features, it should remain easier to market than a less distinctive used pickup.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 GMC Canyon safe?

The GMC Canyon earns a four-star overall crash test rating from NHTSA, mainly due to its three-star rollover resistance score.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

The Canyon includes a reversing camera, Teen Driver technology, Rear Seat Reminder, automatic collision notification through OnStar, and, on Denali, forward-collision warning and lane-departure warning. Those features help, but the truck still misses several important modern safety systems, including blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic emergency braking.

That gap matters if safety tech is a top priority, because you’ll need to accept a more limited driver-assistance suite than many newer rivals offer.

Should I buy a 2017 GMC Canyon or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 63.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 adds Denali-specific luxury touches and a stronger tech package, including the 8-inch screen and available driver alerts.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $18,215, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $19,958 average.
• The 2016 is a refreshed midsize truck that helped revive the segment and gave buyers a domestic alternative.

The bottom line: If you want the better-equipped, more polished Canyon and you’re comfortable paying near the current market average, the 2017 is the cleaner choice. If your priority is saving money first, the 2016 can be the smarter path, especially if you find one in strong condition and with the right equipment.
