Is the 2017 Ford F-150 a good car?

Yes — the 2017 Ford F-150 earns 4.68/5 from owners and 7.83/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise the truck’s safety features, power, and spacious interior, and they also appreciate the variety of options and upscale amenities. That makes it a strong fit if you want a serious off-road truck that still works as a daily driver and offers a premium-feeling cabin in higher trims. With 28.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s also enough market activity to give you room to shop carefully.

Is the 2017 Ford F-150 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.68/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Reviewers describe the truck as dependable in the ways that matter most to used buyers, especially when it comes to power, safety features, and everyday usability. The feedback also points to a truck you can count on for a mix of capability and comfort, with many owners valuing the spacious interior and broad range of equipment. The expert drive notes reinforce that this is built to be a daily driver as well as an off-road machine, which supports the case for long-term ownership.

If you’re shopping used, the main ownership risk is that higher-mileage examples may show wear from hard use, especially on trucks that were driven off-road or heavily optioned.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Ford F-150?

At 69.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough inspection of the frame, suspension, tires, and underbody, especially if the truck may have seen off-road use. Pay close attention to condition on higher-end examples, since owners mention pricing concerns and a few minor quality issues in used trucks. It’s also smart to confirm that the equipment you want is actually present, because this truck could be optioned heavily.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Raptor leans more toward function than form, with custom 35-inch tires, a beefed-up Fox Racing suspension, and a torque-on-demand transfer case. It also adds substantial chassis and body reinforcement, so you should expect a very different off-road-focused setup than a standard F-150.
• Powertrain: The 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 makes 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque, and the 10-speed transmission helps keep highway revs low. It’s built for strong off-road performance and everyday drivability, though the transmission can feel clunky when cold.
• Safety package: Standard blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic and trailer coverage is a standout, and the available Technology package adds adaptive cruise with collision mitigation, lane-keep with warning and intervention, auto high beams, and auto wipers. The 360-degree camera with split view is also a useful add-on.
• Infotainment: The truck uses an 8-inch touchscreen with Sync 3 and Sync Connect, plus standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 360-degree camera can also be viewed on that screen.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA rates it at 15 mpg city, 18 mpg highway, and 16 mpg combined.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Ford F-150?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the right truck.

• Deal availability: 28.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 9,625 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.09% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 69.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $21,326, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Ford F-150's resale value?

The current average of $21,330 sits slightly below last year's $22,713.

That softer pricing suggests future sellers may not see the same upside they would have a year ago, especially if market supply stays healthy. For you, that means buying discipline matters: condition, mileage, and equipment will have a bigger effect on resale than simply owning the model. Trucks with cleaner histories and desirable off-road or tech equipment should hold buyer interest better than rougher examples.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.68/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Ford F-150 safe?

The 2017 Ford F-150 earns an overall five-star rating from the government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, with a four-star rating in rollover testing. The independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded it its highest rating of Good in all tests.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes front, front-side, rear-side, rear-body, and front-head airbags, plus inflatable rear belts, traction and stability control, a rollover safety system, and brake assist. The truck also includes blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic and trailer coverage, and the available Technology package adds adaptive cruise with collision mitigation, lane-keep with warning and intervention, auto high beams, and auto wipers. One caveat is that the Raptor’s off-road tires may lengthen braking distances compared with the base F-150.

Should I buy a 2017 Ford F-150 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 28.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 69.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.09% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.68/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It brings the Raptor back on a new platform with major suspension and chassis upgrades for serious off-road performance.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $18,874, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $21,330 average.
• It leans hard into luxury while still feeling like a true pickup.

Consider the 2018 if:

• At $24,000, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $21,330 average.
• It’s a more well-rounded full-size pickup with strong towing and fuel economy.

The bottom line: Buy the 2017 if you want the Raptor’s off-road focus, strong owner satisfaction, and a market that still offers room to shop. If price is your top priority, the 2016 is the better value play; if you want a broader all-around truck, the 2018 is the better alternative.
