CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Dodge Durango
overall

Summary
With 81 currently listed for sale near Jacksonville, FL and an average price of $17,595.00, 13.6% of 2017 Dodge Durangos for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Dodge Durango 4.56 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.
51.9% of 2017 Durango models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Dodge Durango stands out as a full-size SUV that can carry up to 7 passengers while still offering serious towing ability. It can tow up to 7,400 pounds, and it is described as serving family-hauling duty with a crossover-like ride and the amenities a busy family needs to get through the day. That combination gives it a broad appeal: it is built to handle practical daily use, but it also brings the kind of capability that helps it feel more substantial than many family-oriented SUVs.
Inside, the 2017 Durango is notable for how its trims can move the cabin from basic to beautiful. Even at the top of the range, though, it is not presented as a refined luxury SUV; instead, it keeps a rugged character that fits the Dodge brand. That emphasis on function over polish can be part of the appeal for buyers who want an SUV that feels well equipped without trying too hard to be fancy. It can be outfitted with leather seats and rear-seat entertainment, and it is described as able to provide the features needed to keep kids entertained and adults comfortable.

It’s a great vehicle. I love the looks. I love the tow capacity: I love the features and room. The 3.6/8 speed is a great combo. But… the small offset crash rating is a disaster. And as a dad of teens it made me cross it off my list. Why hasn’t dodge addresses this? Even mitigated it?

How much does the 2017 Dodge Durango cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $14,920 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,769.23 |
| Year-Round High | $16,274.38 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,271 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.30% |
Prices have softened 8.30% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,276 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and equipment. If you find a listing below $14,769.23, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Dodge Durango a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Dodge Durango earns a 4.56/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Performance, Form and function, and Technology.
Owners consistently praise the powerful V8, spacious interior, and smooth ride, and they also like the broad range of features. That lines up well with the Durango’s role as a family SUV that can still tow up to 7,400 pounds and handle daily hauling duties without feeling flimsy.
The Durango’s appeal is strongest if you want a three-row SUV with real capability and a more rugged personality than many family crossovers. With 26.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Dodge Durango reliable?
Owners rate it 4.56/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a reliable, dependable, and long-term ownership experience, with many drivers describing the Durango as a vehicle they enjoy living with day after day. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that it feels confident and controlled on the road, which supports the sense that it’s built to handle regular family use without drama.
The Durango also comes with a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain limited warranty, which adds some reassurance for used buyers. Even so, you should still budget for maintenance and verify service history, since a used SUV with this much capability can carry higher ownership risk if it has been neglected.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Dodge Durango?
At 61.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with optional equipment. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the features you want are actually present on the trim you’re looking at.

- Trim level: The Durango offers four trim levels—SXT, GT, Citadel, and R/T. The base SXT is the most stripped-down version, with a 5.0-inch screen, a 6-speaker audio system, and seating for five, while higher trims add more comfort and convenience features.
- Powertrain: You can choose a 3.6-liter V6 or a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The V6 is the efficiency-minded choice, while the V8 brings stronger towing and more effortless acceleration.
- Safety package: Available driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control with stop, advanced brake assist, blind-spot monitoring with cross-path detection, forward-collision warning with active braking, ParkSense rear park assist and rear backup camera, and LaneSense lane-departure warning. Some of these are optional rather than standard.
- Infotainment: Uconnect comes with either a 5.0-inch or 8.4-inch touchscreen, and available upgrades include SiriusXM services, a 9-speaker Alpine audio system with subwoofer and amplifier, and a BeatsAudio premium sound system. There is no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto compatibility.
- Fuel efficiency: The V6 AWD is rated 18/25 mpg, and the Hemi V8 is rated 14/22 mpg. Fuel costs can climb quickly if you drive long distances or tow often.
Which 2017 Dodge Durango trim should I buy?
The 2017 Dodge Durango is offered in 4 trim levels: SXT, GT, Citadel, and R/T.
Here's the short version:
- SXT: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Durango’s core utility at the lowest starting price. It’s best if you want the SUV’s size, towing ability, and family-friendly basics without paying for extras.
- GT: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a more useful mix of comfort and convenience, including a larger touchscreen, power-adjustable front seats, and rear park assist with a backup camera.
- Citadel: This is the trim to consider if you want a more upscale cabin, with ventilated Nappa leather, navigation, and the available V8 for stronger towing.
- R/T: This is the performance-focused choice, with the Hemi V8, sport suspension, performance steering, and unique interior touches. It makes sense if you want the most muscular Durango experience.
The safety package is strongest when you add the available driver-assistance features, since several of them are not standard on every trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Dodge Durango?
The market looks selective rather than overheated, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 26.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,276 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.30% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,769.23, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Dodge Durango's resale value?
The current average of $14,920 sits slightly below last year's $16,271.
That softer pricing suggests the Durango has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. If you shop carefully now, you may have less downside left than a buyer who paid closer to last year’s average.
The model’s broad family appeal and strong owner satisfaction can help support demand later, especially for well-equipped examples with desirable features and clean history. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.56/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Dodge Durango safe?
The 2017 Durango earned four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover, and five-star ratings in side crash testing from NHTSA.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Every Durango includes multiple airbags, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, rain brake support, ready alert braking, and trailer-sway control. Available driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control with stop, advanced brake assist, blind-spot monitoring with cross-path detection, forward-collision warning with active braking, ParkSense rear park assist and rear backup camera, and LaneSense lane-departure warning.
The main caveat is that the crash-test results are not class-leading, so you should pay close attention to the available safety equipment on any used example you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2017 Dodge Durango or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 26.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.30% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.56/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 Durango balances strong towing ability with a family-friendly ride and a rugged, well-equipped cabin.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $13,875, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $14,920 average.
- It adds fresh wheels, more color choices, and a Sport mode that sharpens response.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $17,879, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $14,920 average.
- It adds Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a standard reversing camera.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, capability, and available equipment, the 2017 is the smart default. If your budget is tighter, the 2016 can save you money while keeping the Durango formula intact. If you care most about newer tech, the 2018 is the better fit, but you’ll pay more for it.
