Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Dodge Durango 4.45 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2014 Dodge Durango stands out as a rugged, substantial SUV that feels as if it were carved from a single block of steel. That toughness is part of its appeal, but it is paired with a more polished character than many buyers might expect. Rather than the old-school image some people associate with the name, this version is described as stylish, safe, roomy, refined, and technologically sophisticated, making it a more modern and appealing choice than its reputation might suggest.
Inside, the 2014 Dodge Durango’s spacious cabin is one of its biggest strengths, and owners also praise its comfort, power, and the quality of materials such as leather seats. The Uconnect system is another commonly appreciated feature because of its smooth operation. The main drawback is that reliability and cost-of-ownership predictions are unfavorable, and some owners have reported issues with the engine and climate control systems.

Bought new, and luv my Durango, 206k miles later. No major repairs needed until recently. Has the famous Dodge Ticking sound, lifters need replacing I’m told. And transfer case needs replacing, because truck gears grind or something during takeoff if accelerating too fast. Besides those two things, can’t think of anything besides Normal wear and tear. 10 years later and I Still luv my Durango.

Is the 2014 Dodge Durango a good car?
Generally — 4.45/5 from owners and 7.5/10 from our experts point to a model that lands well with shoppers who want a roomy, refined SUV with strong everyday appeal. The standout strength is Technology at 10/10.
Owners repeatedly praise the spacious interior, comfort, power, leather-seat quality, and the smooth operation of the Uconnect system. The overview also frames this Durango as a good fit if you want a stylish, safe, roomy, refined, and technologically sophisticated SUV rather than something purely old-school.
The market also shows 25.0% good or great deals, which gives you a decent chance to find a compelling price if you shop carefully.
Is the 2014 Dodge Durango reliable?
Owners rate it 4.45/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. At the same time, owner feedback and expert commentary both point to reliability concerns, especially around the engine and climate control systems, so you should go in with your eyes open.
The expert review also says the Durango is expected to deliver below-average reliability and high ownership costs, which is the kind of warning that matters most when you’re buying used. On the plus side, the review describes the SUV as refined, durable, and capable of handling rough roads well, which supports the idea that it can feel substantial and well-built in daily use.
If you’re considering one, prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection and service-history review so you can judge whether the specific vehicle has been maintained well enough to reduce long-term ownership risk.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Dodge Durango?
At 60.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then focus your inspection on body condition, repair quality, and signs of uneven wear or poor collision repair. Because reliability concerns are part of the Durango story, it’s smart to pay close attention to how the engine, climate control, and electronics behave during a test drive.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SXT Plus adds a 12-way power driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, roof-rail crossbars, and satellite radio, while the Limited adds leather seats, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, an 8.4-inch touchscreen, Uconnect Access, dual USB charging ports, a 115-volt outlet, an upgraded sound system, remote engine start, a reversing camera, rear parking-assist sensors, and a universal garage door opener. The R/T adds a 5.7-liter V8, performance steering, a sport-tuned suspension, heavy-duty brakes, 20-inch wheels, a premium sound system, and a power tailgate. The Citadel adds premium leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, a power sunroof, navigation, a cargo net, a cargo cover, bi-Xenon headlights, rain-sensing wipers, and extra chrome trim.
- Powertrain: The standard 3.6-liter V6 makes 290 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque and is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The review also notes an optional 5.7-liter V8, and the Durango can tow up to 6,200 pounds with the V6 and 7,400 pounds with the V8.
- Safety package: Trailer Sway Control is standard for all 2014 Durango models. Uconnect Access and its “911” button are part of the safety story, and the Limited can be upgraded with rain-sensing wipers, automatic high-beam headlights, and Blind-Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Path Detection. That system is also available on the R/T and Citadel with Adaptive Cruise Control and Forward-Collision Warning with Crash Mitigation.
- Infotainment: The Durango uses an 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Uconnect Access services on higher trims, and the system is described as easy to use with large, responsive touch-sensitive buttons and crisp graphics. Uconnect Access adds traffic, weather, gas-price, movie-listing, sports-score, Wi-Fi hotspot, and emergency-assistance functions.
- Fuel efficiency: The V6 test vehicle averaged 18.2 mpg, and the review says the EPA combined estimate for that AWD test vehicle was 19 mpg.
Which 2014 Dodge Durango trim should I buy?
The 2014 Dodge Durango is offered in 4 trim levels: SXT Plus, Limited, R/T, Citadel.
Here's the short version:
- SXT Plus: This is the entry point if you want the Durango’s core space and presence without moving up the price ladder. It adds useful everyday equipment like the power driver’s seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel, roof-rail crossbars, and satellite radio, but it also lacks the V8 option.
- Limited: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a strong mix of comfort, convenience, and tech, including leather seats, heated seats, the heated steering wheel, the 8.4-inch touchscreen, Uconnect Access, remote start, and parking aids. If you want the most balanced used-buying case, this is the one to focus on.
- R/T: Choose this if you want the sportier Durango. It brings the V8, sport-tuned suspension, performance steering, heavy-duty brakes, 20-inch wheels, and a power tailgate, so it suits you best if driving character matters more than value.
- Citadel: This is the luxury-leaning choice, with premium leather, ventilated front seats, navigation, a sunroof, and extra exterior polish. It makes sense if you want the most upscale Durango experience and are willing to pay for it.
The safety package is strongest on Limited, R/T, and Citadel, where blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection, adaptive cruise control, and forward-collision warning with crash mitigation are available.

This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and focused.
- Deal availability: 25.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 675 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.23% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,506.33, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Dodge Durango's resale value?
The current average of $10,855 sits slightly below last year's $11,454.
That softer pricing trend suggests the Durango has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help if you buy now and plan to own for a while. For a future seller, that also means your upside is likely to depend more on condition, mileage, and trim desirability than on broad market momentum.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.45/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 Dodge Durango safe?
The 2014 Durango earns four-star ratings in frontal-impact driver protection and rollover resistance, and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests. It also receives a Good rating from IIHS in all measures except the small-overlap frontal-impact test, which had not been assessed at the time of the review.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Durango’s safety story includes Ready Alert Braking, Rain Brake Support, Trailer Sway Control, and Uconnect Access with its “911” button. Blind-Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Path Detection is available on the Limited, and that system can also be paired with Adaptive Cruise Control and Forward-Collision Warning with Crash Mitigation on the R/T and Citadel. Models equipped with the optional Forward-Collision Warning system also receive a Basic front crash prevention rating from IIHS.
Should I buy a 2014 Dodge Durango or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 25.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.23% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.45/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The expert review says the Durango is stylish, safe, roomy, refined, and technologically sophisticated, but also warns that reliability and ownership costs are a major hurdle.
The bottom line: If you want the 2014 Durango’s mix of space, tech, and road presence, it’s a sensible used-buying target as long as you shop carefully and verify condition. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the softened market and decent deal share make this a year worth considering, but you should be extra selective about history and maintenance.
