The GT’s fuel economy is also a strength, with an EPA rating of 18 mpg city and 27 mpg highway.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Dodge Challenger?

At 56.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been modified or shows signs of hard use. Focus on body condition, panel alignment, tire wear, brake wear, and evidence of deferred maintenance. Because this model can be bought in many configurations, make sure the specific car you’re considering has the equipment and condition you expect.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The GT trim adds all-wheel drive, while the standard rear-wheel-drive trims keep the classic Challenger character. The GT also brings a more modern cabin experience with Uconnect 8.4, navigation, real-time traffic, weather alerts, onboard apps, remote start, passive entry with push-button start, cooled front seats, and LED lighting.
• Powertrain: The GT pairs a 3.6-liter V6 with an 8-speed automatic and 305 horsepower, while the broader lineup includes three V8 options for buyers who want more power. The GT’s fuel economy is a strength, but the car still favors cruising over outright excitement.
• Safety package: The Challenger includes a reversing camera as standard, while lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and forward-collision alert are optional. Some driver-assist features are not standard, so check the exact equipment on the car you’re considering.
• Infotainment: Uconnect 8.4 is standard on the GT, with navigation, real-time traffic, weather alerts, and onboard apps. The system also supports Performance Pages, which lets you monitor vehicle data such as steering angle, torque, G-forces, and quarter-mile times.
• Fuel efficiency: The GT is rated at 18 mpg city and 27 mpg highway, and the expert drive recorded around 22 mpg over 500 miles.

Which 2017 Dodge Challenger trim should I buy?

The 2017 Dodge Challenger is offered in 14 trim levels: SXT, GT, R/T, R/T Shaker, R/T Plus, R/T Shaker Plus, T/A, T/A Plus, T/A 392, 392 HEMI Scat Pack Shaker, 392 HEMI Scat Pack Shaker Plus, SRT 392, SRT Hellcat, and SRT Hellcat.

Here's the short version:

• SXT: This is the entry point if you want the Challenger look at the lowest price, but it’s the most basic way into the lineup.
• GT: This is the best-value trim if you want the broadest everyday appeal, because it adds all-wheel drive, the 3.6-liter V6, and a much richer equipment set. It’s the trim to choose if you want year-round usability without giving up the Challenger’s personality.
• R/T: This is the move if you want V8 power and the classic muscle-car feel without jumping all the way to the higher-performance trims.
• R/T Shaker: Choose this if you want the R/T formula with extra visual attitude from the shaker setup.
• R/T Plus: This is for buyers who want a more upscale R/T experience and more comfort-oriented equipment.
• R/T Shaker Plus: This combines the shaker look with the added comfort and convenience of the Plus package.
• T/A: This trim leans into a more distinctive performance appearance and is aimed at shoppers who want a more aggressive look.
• T/A Plus: This is the better pick if you want the T/A styling with more equipment.
• T/A 392: This is the choice for buyers who want a stronger performance focus and more serious V8 character.
• 392 HEMI Scat Pack Shaker: This trim adds even more muscle-car presence and is for shoppers who want a louder, more expressive performance setup.
• 392 HEMI Scat Pack Shaker Plus: This is the more fully equipped version of the Scat Pack Shaker formula.
• SRT 392: This is for buyers who want a higher-performance Challenger with a more serious chassis-and-powertrain feel.
• SRT Hellcat: This is the extreme-performance choice for shoppers who want the most dramatic power and presence.
• SRT Hellcat: This is the top-end performance trim and the one to buy if outright speed is your priority.

The GT is the best-value trim for most used buyers because it combines AWD, strong standard tech, and everyday comfort. Safety-wise, the Challenger’s driver-assistance features are mostly optional, so verify exactly what’s installed on any car you’re considering.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Dodge Challenger?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully and enough deal activity to find value.

• Deal availability: 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,451 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.09% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 56.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $20,184, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Dodge Challenger's resale value?

The current average of $20,594 sits slightly below last year's $21,699.

That softer pricing suggests the market has moved in buyers’ favor, which can make it harder for future sellers to command top dollar unless the car is especially clean or well equipped. If you buy well now, you may have less depreciation pressure than someone who paid closer to last year’s average. Condition, mileage, and trim will matter a lot when it’s time to resell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.64/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Dodge Challenger safe?

The 2017 Dodge Challenger earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave it Good ratings in the moderate front overlap and side crash tests, Marginal in the small front overlap test, and Acceptable in the roof strength and headrest/seat tests.

It earns a 4/10 safety score from our experts.

The Challenger includes a reversing camera as standard, while lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and forward-collision alert are optional. The small front overlap result is the main caution here, since the body structure was rated Poor in that test.

Should I buy a 2017 Dodge Challenger or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 56.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.09% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.64/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 adds the new GT trim with AWD, giving you a more usable year-round Challenger option.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $24,648, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $20,594 average.
• It emphasizes authentic retro muscle-car character with fresh options and a shaker hood.

The bottom line: If you want the better value and the more versatile setup, the 2017 is the smarter primary choice. If you’re shopping purely for style-first muscle-car character and find a particularly clean 2016, that can still be worth a look — but you’ll likely pay more for it.
