Is the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze a good car?

Generally — the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze earns a 4.4/5 user rating and a 6.7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 8/10.

Owners consistently praise its comfort, handling, and excellent gas mileage, and they also like the tech features and modern design. The Cruze’s hatchback body style adds extra utility, which fits shoppers who want a compact car with more versatility than a traditional sedan. With 29.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze reliable?

Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback points to strong gas mileage, comfort, and a well-rounded daily-driving experience, which are all encouraging signs for dependability. The expert drive notes also frame the Cruze as a practical compact that can handle everyday use without complaint. Chevrolet’s Teen Driver mode adds another layer of confidence for families.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that condition and maintenance history matter more than the badge alone, so you should verify how the car was treated and serviced.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Chevrolet Cruze?

At 52.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough inspection of bodywork, suspension, and interior wear. Because the Cruze was offered in different body styles and trim levels, it’s worth confirming that the equipment on the listing matches what you expect. Focus on how the car drives, how the tech works, and whether any prior damage was repaired cleanly.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The hatchback is offered only in LT and Premier trims, and the lower trims omit basic features like cruise control. The LT adds 16-inch alloys, a 6-speaker stereo with satellite radio, LED running lights, heated mirrors, and steering-wheel controls, while the Premier adds leather, a heated steering wheel, chrome exterior accents, and a more upscale cabin.
• Powertrain: The Cruze uses a turbocharged 1.4-liter engine with 153 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque. It feels adequate in low-speed driving, but it can be short on passing power and highway punch.
• Safety package: Teen Driver is standard on every Cruze. The LT can add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and rear parking sensors, while the Premier can add forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning and intervention, and auto high beams through an available package.
• Infotainment: Standard Chevy MyLink uses an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Navigation requires the Premier and the available Sun and Sound with Navigation package.
• Fuel efficiency: The automatic is rated at 28 mpg city and 37 mpg highway, with 31 mpg combined.

Which 2017 Chevrolet Cruze trim should I buy?

The 2017 Chevrolet Cruze is offered in 2 trim levels: LT and Premier.

Here's the short version:

• LT: This is the best-value starting point because it gets you the core Cruze experience without jumping to the higher-priced Premier. You get the 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 16-inch alloys, LED running lights, and heated mirrors, and you can add useful safety and comfort packages if you want more equipment.
• Premier: This is the right pick if you want a more upscale Cruze with leather, a heated steering wheel, chrome exterior accents, and the Convenience Package standard. It also opens the door to more advanced safety and convenience options, but it costs more and is easier to push into a price range where rivals become more compelling.

The safety-package note to keep in mind is that the LT’s driver-assistance features are optional, while the Premier needs an additional package for the more advanced warnings and interventions.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Chevrolet Cruze?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on strong examples.

• Deal availability: 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,706 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.82% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 52.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $9,158, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze's resale value?

The current average of $9,225 sits slightly below last year's $9,591.

That softer pricing suggests the Cruze is not in a strong appreciation phase, so future sellers should expect value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim. A well-kept example with desirable equipment should be easier to move than a higher-mileage car with prior damage or missing features. The hatchback body style and strong tech content can help it stand out, but the market still rewards clean, well-documented examples most.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze safe?

The 2017 Chevrolet Cruze earns Good ratings from IIHS in Moderate Overlap Front and Side Impact testing, and it previously lost its five-star overall rating from NHTSA with four-star scores in all tests except a five-star frontal crash test.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Teen Driver is standard, and the Cruze also includes full-length side curtain, knee, and front and rear side airbags. Available driver-assistance features include blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning and intervention, and auto high beams, depending on trim and package. A key caveat is that the Cruze’s NHTSA results are not class-leading, so safety-conscious shoppers should pay close attention to the available driver-assistance equipment on any used listing.

Should I buy a 2017 Chevrolet Cruze or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 52.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.82% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 adds a hatchback body style and standard Teen Driver mode for extra utility and family appeal.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $7,961, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $9,225 average.
• It emphasizes comfort, efficiency, and everyday practicality.

Consider the 2018 if:

• At $10,015, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $9,225 average.
• It broadens the lineup with diesel versions for efficiency-focused shoppers.

The bottom line: If you want the most distinctive version of this Cruze generation, the 2017 is the one to target because of its hatchback utility and standard Teen Driver mode. If your priority is lower purchase price, the 2016 is the better value play; if you want to spend more for a broader powertrain lineup, the 2018 is worth a look.
