Is the 2017 Buick LaCrosse reliable?

Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The expert evaluation also describes the LaCrosse as structurally rock solid, which supports the impression that it is built to hold up well. Buick’s performance notes also emphasize a robust architecture and a refined powertrain, both of which reinforce confidence in everyday use.

If you’re buying used, the main long-term ownership risk is that some owners report electronic-system concerns, so you’ll want to verify that everything works properly before you commit.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Buick LaCrosse?

At 59.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has any prior bodywork or electronic complaints. Pay close attention to the condition of the cabin electronics, the temperature gauge, warning messages, paint quality, and any signs that comfort or driver-assistance features are not working as intended. A careful test drive should also confirm that the ride, steering, and transmission behavior feel smooth and consistent.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Buick offers the LaCrosse in Base, Preferred, Essence, and Premium trims, and the lower trims leave out some of the richer equipment you’ll find higher up the range. The Premium trim is the most fully equipped, while the base setup is the one most likely to feel sparse if you want the full luxury experience.
• Powertrain: The LaCrosse uses a 3.6-liter V6 with an 8-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive is standard with all-wheel drive available. The engine is described as refined and satisfying, and the car’s lighter structure helps it feel more capable than its size suggests.
• Safety package: Buick pairs full-speed-range adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, and the car also offers lane-departure prevention, blind-spot warning, a safety-alert seat, a rear-seat reminder, Teen Driver technology, and OnStar services. Some of these features are not included on every trim, so you should confirm the exact equipment on the car you’re considering.
• Infotainment: The LaCrosse includes a responsive touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot capability, and Buick’s IntelliLink system. It also offers useful extras such as a Bose audio system, a head-up display, and wireless charging.
• Fuel efficiency: The front-wheel-drive test car averaged 23.2 mpg on the evaluation loop, and the EPA figure cited for that car was 25 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2017 Buick LaCrosse trim should I buy?

The 2017 Buick LaCrosse is offered in 4 trim levels: Base, Preferred, Essence, and Premium.

Here's the short version:

• Base: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the LaCrosse’s core comfort and style at the lowest starting point. It’s the trim most likely to leave you wanting more equipment if you care about a richer luxury feel.
• Preferred: This is the trim to focus on if you want a better balance of equipment and value. It should give you a more satisfying ownership experience than the base model without pushing you all the way to the top of the range.
• Essence: This is the middle-ground choice for shoppers who want a more upscale feel and more of the features that make the LaCrosse appealing as a luxury sedan. It’s a sensible step up if you want comfort and convenience without going all the way to Premium pricing.
• Premium: This is the best-equipped version and the one that most fully delivers the LaCrosse’s upscale mission. If you want the richest feature set and the strongest luxury impression, this is the trim to target.

Safety-package equipment varies by trim, so confirm that the specific car you’re considering includes the driver-assistance features you want.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Buick LaCrosse?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 304 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.49% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 59.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $15,112, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Buick LaCrosse's resale value?

The current average of $15,120 sits slightly below last year's $15,831.

That softer pricing suggests the LaCrosse has already absorbed some of its depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. If you purchase near the lower end of the range, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss when it’s time to sell. The model’s premium image and strong owner satisfaction can also help support demand in the used market.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Buick LaCrosse safe?

The 2017 Buick LaCrosse earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings for front passenger protection in a frontal-impact collision and driver protection in a side-impact collision.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Buick equips the LaCrosse with a broad driver-assistance suite that includes full-speed-range adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure prevention, blind-spot warning, a safety-alert seat, a rear-seat reminder, Teen Driver technology, and OnStar services. The expert review also notes that some of these features are not standard on every trim, so you should verify the exact safety equipment on the car you’re considering. The main caveat is that the crash-test results are strong overall, but not perfect.

Should I buy a 2017 Buick LaCrosse or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 59.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.49% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The redesigned 2017 LaCrosse is presented as a clear example of Buick’s move toward a more premium, modern image.

The bottom line: If you want the LaCrosse with the strongest blend of modern design, comfort, and value, the 2017 is the one to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare it with nearby years, but the 2017 stands out for its upscale feel and broad feature set.
