Why it stands out
The 2017 BMW X3 stands out as a compact luxury SUV that emphasizes driving enjoyment as much as everyday usefulness. BMW’s formula gives it a sporty feel and handling that is more carlike than trucklike, while still providing the high seating position and easy access buyers expect from an SUV. It also carries the brand’s premium character, with a high-quality interior and the kind of agility that has long been one of BMW’s hallmarks.
For this model year, the X3 benefits from the third-generation redesign’s blend of modern technology and engaging dynamics. The source describes it as well received, with LED headlights, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, the latest connectivity options, adaptive suspension, and automatic climate control. It also notes strong performance from the available engines, including a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 248 horsepower and an eight-speed automatic transmission, plus more powerful six-cylinder versions. That mix makes the 2017 X3 appealing to buyers who want a premium SUV that still feels rewarding to drive.
There are tradeoffs, though. The source says some rivals offer more rear passenger space, and premium ownership can bring higher maintenance and repair costs. Even so, the 2017 BMW X3 remains attractive for shoppers who value sporty handling, a refined cabin, and a practical SUV layout with a distinctly upscale feel.

| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $12,326 |
| Year-Round Low | $12,326 |
| Year-Round High | $13,756 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $13,755 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −10.39% |

There are 1,122 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.
Is the 2017 BMW X3 a good car?
Yes — the 2017 BMW X3 earns a 4.7/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its luxurious interior, smooth ride, sporty performance, cabin comfort, and practical features. That lines up well with its role as a compact luxury SUV that blends everyday usefulness with a more engaging driving feel. With 33.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a meaningful chance to find a competitive offer.
Is the 2017 BMW X3 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with repeated praise for the smooth ride, comfortable cabin, and practical day-to-day usability. That said, some buyers wanted more equipment in certain models, so you should pay close attention to how a used example was equipped and maintained. For long-term ownership, the main risk is less about the model’s appeal and more about buying one with incomplete service history or deferred upkeep.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 BMW X3?
At 65.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection on any listing that looks especially clean or unusually well priced. Focus on condition details that matter most in a premium SUV, including signs of prior bodywork, interior wear, and evidence of consistent maintenance. If a seller cannot clearly document the car’s past, move on to another listing.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 BMW X3?
This is a moderate market, so you can be selective without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,122 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.39% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,326, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 BMW X3's resale value?
The current average of $12,326 sits slightly below last year's $13,755.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For a future seller, that also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle was maintained. Well-kept examples should hold up better than average because shoppers still respond to the X3’s premium feel and strong owner satisfaction.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 BMW X3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.39% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $17,951, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $12,326 average.
- It brings a full redesign with a completely new third-generation platform.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2017 if you want the lower entry price and strong owner satisfaction. If you can stretch your budget and want the newer redesign, the 2018 is the better upgrade path; if price matters most, the 2017 is the smarter buy.
