CarGurus Analysis: 2017 BMW 5 Series
overall

Summary
With 1,153 currently listed for sale and an average price of $17,060, 33.1% of 2017 BMW 5 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 BMW 5 Series 4 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
60.5% of 2017 BMW 5 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 BMW 5 Series stands out as a full redesign that brings a fresh chassis, new engines, an updated iDrive interface, and a range of innovative technologies. BMW also used high-strength lightweight materials, so the car grew in size without gaining weight. The result is a midsize luxury sedan that feels like a meaningful step forward rather than a simple styling update.
It also has a more driver-focused character than its understated appearance might suggest. The new engines increased power without increasing consumption, and the car’s design nods back toward the 5 Series’ traditional role as a driver’s car. One limitation is that it no longer offers a manual transmission, which may matter to buyers who value that kind of involvement.

This turned out to be a base model with almost zero extra features other than a sunshade and all wheel drive with the upgraded engine. However i was anticipating a luxury sedan and got a luxury performance sedan. I was greatly surprised with the acceleration coupled with the ride quality and numerous technology features. I am going from a 2011 Cadillac cts coupe performance trim and the bmw is comparable in ride quality, but head and shoulders above it in acceleration and braking ability.

| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $17,147 |
| Year-Round Low | $16,722 |
| Year-Round High | $17,999 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $17,915 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.28% |
Prices have softened 4.28% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,151 listings available, which suggests a healthy amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2017 BMW 5 Series a good car?
Generally — the 2017 BMW 5 Series earns a 4/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Technology and Safety.
It’s a full redesign with a fresh chassis, new engines, and an updated iDrive interface, and it keeps a more driver-focused character than its understated styling suggests. The cabin and tech are positioned for buyers who want a midsize luxury sedan that feels like a meaningful step forward rather than a simple refresh.
34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 BMW 5 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2017 5 Series is presented as a well-built, balanced sedan with a sorted suspension and an intelligent transmission, and the new engines are described as strong without increasing consumption. The performance notes also point to a smooth, capable powertrain and a chassis that feels more compliant over bumps while still preserving control.
If you’re buying used, the biggest ownership risk is that the car’s appeal can be undermined by option-heavy examples, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 BMW 5 Series?
At 60.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you get too far into the process, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks for accident repairs, wear from heavy use, and any signs of neglected maintenance. Focus especially on how the car drives, how the electronics behave, and whether the condition matches the seller’s description.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 530i starts at $51,200 and is described as a handsome, well-built sedan with a balanced chassis and comfortable interior, but it can feel sparse once you start comparing it with more heavily optioned versions.
- Powertrain: The base turbo 2.0-liter engine makes 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, while the turbo inline-six makes 335 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque; the V8 model is the quickest, but the four-cylinder is still described as one of the best engines on the market.
- Safety package: The car offers blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep warning and intervention with side-collision avoidance, radar-controlled adaptive cruise, collision warning and intervention, pedestrian detection, traffic jam assistant, and automatic parking.
- Infotainment: The sixth-generation iDrive system is paired with touchscreen, rotary dial, steering-wheel controls, and console inputs; Apple CarPlay is available for an extra cost, and Android Auto is not available.
- Fuel efficiency: The 530i is rated at 24 mpg city and 34 mpg highway for a combined 27 mpg.
Which 2017 BMW 5 Series trim should I buy?
The 2017 BMW 5 Series is offered in 3 trim levels: 530i, 540i, M550i.
Here's the short version:
- 530i: This is the best-value choice if you want the core 5 Series experience without chasing the pricier engines. It gets the updated turbo 2.0-liter engine, and the writeup makes clear that it’s a strong all-around package even before you start adding options.
- 540i: Step up here if you want noticeably stronger acceleration from the turbo inline-six and a more effortless passing experience at highway speeds. It’s the sweet spot for buyers who want more performance without jumping all the way to the V8.
- M550i: Choose this if outright speed matters most, since the twin-turbo V8 delivers the quickest acceleration in the lineup. It’s the right pick if you want the most powerful version and are willing to pay for it.
The safety package is broad, but many of the most advanced driver-assistance features are optional rather than standard.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 BMW 5 Series?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,151 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.28% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,722, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 BMW 5 Series's resale value?
The current average of $17,147 sits slightly below last year's $17,915.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For a future seller, that also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car was maintained.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 BMW 5 Series safe?
The 2017 BMW 5 Series earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS, with Good scores in all IIHS tests.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The 5 Series offers blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep warning and intervention with side-collision avoidance, radar-controlled adaptive cruise, collision warning and intervention, pedestrian detection, traffic jam assistant, and automatic parking. Some of the most advanced systems are optional, so you’ll want to confirm exactly which driver-assistance features are fitted on the used example you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2017 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.28% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It’s a full redesign with a fresh chassis, new engines, and an updated iDrive interface.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $18,427, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $17,147 average.
- It adds the 530e plug-in hybrid, giving you a more frugal option in the lineup.
The bottom line: If you want the better-value buy, the 2017 is the stronger starting point because pricing has eased and inventory is available. If you’re willing to pay more for the plug-in hybrid option, the 2018 is the better path for efficiency-focused shopping.
