Summary
With 155 currently listed for sale near Houston, TX and an average price of $15,704.00, 21.9% of 2017 BMW 5 Series for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 BMW 5 Series 4 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
74.2% of 2017 BMW 5 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 BMW 5 Series stands out as a thoroughly renewed take on BMW’s midsize luxury sedan. It arrives with a fresh chassis, new engines, an updated iDrive interface, and a range of innovative technologies, all aimed at helping BMW push back toward the top of the segment. Even though BMW’s styling changes are often subtle, this model is described as all new, which gives it a more substantial redesign than its appearance might first suggest.
One of its key strengths is the way it uses high-strength lightweight materials to grow in size without gaining weight. The new engines are also a major part of its appeal, increasing power without increasing consumption. The car is presented as moving back toward being a driver’s car again, which should matter to buyers who want a luxury sedan that feels more engaging behind the wheel. At the same time, it no longer offers a manual transmission, which may disappoint shoppers looking for the most hands-on driving experience.

This turned out to be a base model with almost zero extra features other than a sunshade and all wheel drive with the upgraded engine. However i was anticipating a luxury sedan and got a luxury performance sedan. I was greatly surprised with the acceleration coupled with the ride quality and numerous technology features. I am going from a 2011 Cadillac cts coupe performance trim and the bmw is comparable in ride quality, but head and shoulders above it in acceleration and braking ability.

Is the 2017 BMW 5 Series a good car?
Generally — 4/5 from owners and 7.83/10 from our experts, the 2017 BMW 5 Series lands as a strong used luxury sedan choice. It’s described as all new for the year, with a fresh chassis, updated engines, and a revised iDrive system, and it aims to move the car back toward a more engaging driver’s-car feel.
The expert score includes a 9/10 in Technology and a 9/10 in Safety, and the model scores 9/10 across Technology and Safety.
That makes it especially appealing if you want a midsize luxury sedan that blends comfort, capability, and a deep tech roster. 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is meaningful room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 BMW 5 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2017 5 Series is presented as a thoroughly renewed model with lightweight materials, new engines, and a more modern chassis, which supports the case for durability if it has been maintained well. The expert evaluation also points to a well-built and balanced chassis, a sorted suspension, and an intelligent transmission, all of which are good signs for everyday dependability.
The performance notes also suggest the powertrains are strong and efficient for the class, with the turbocharged four-cylinder singled out as one of the best engines on the market. If you’re buying used, your biggest long-term risk is likely to come from complexity and option-heavy examples rather than the basic mechanical package.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 BMW 5 Series?
At 60.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a full vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on cars with extensive option content. Focus on body condition, evidence of prior repairs, and whether the car’s technology and driver-assistance features still function properly.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 530i is the value play if you want the core chassis, engine, and luxury experience without piling on expensive extras. Higher trims add more power and equipment, but the options list can quickly inflate cost.
- Powertrain: The turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder is praised for strong torque and efficiency, while the turbo inline-six adds a meaningful performance jump. Every version uses an 8-speed automatic, and there is no manual transmission.
- Safety package: The car can be equipped with blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep warning and intervention with side-collision avoidance, radar-controlled adaptive cruise, collision warning and intervention, pedestrian detection, traffic jam assistant, and automatic parking. Some of these features are optional rather than standard.
- Infotainment: The sixth-generation iDrive system is a major upgrade, and the car can be fitted with gesture control, a heads-up display, Apple CarPlay, and a touchscreen interface. Android Auto is not available.
- Fuel efficiency: The 530i is rated at 24 mpg city and 34 highway for a combined 27 mpg.
Which 2017 BMW 5 Series trim should I buy?
The 2017 BMW 5 Series is offered in 3 trim levels: 530i, 540i, M550i.
Here's the short version:
- 530i: This is the best-value choice if you want the core 5 Series experience without stretching into the pricier engines. It gets the updated turbo 2.0-liter engine, strong efficiency, and the same modern chassis and tech foundation as the rest of the lineup.
- 540i: This is the sweet spot if you want a clear performance upgrade. The turbo inline-six brings much stronger acceleration and is the better pick if you care about passing power and a more effortless feel.
- M550i: Choose this if you want the quickest and most powerful version in the range. The twin-turbo V8 makes this the enthusiast pick, but it also pushes the car much farther up the price ladder.
The safety content notes a Top Safety Pick+ result from IIHS and a five-star NHTSA rating.

What is the 2017 BMW 5 Series's resale value?
The current average of $16,969 sits slightly below last year's $17,904.
That decline suggests the market has softened, which can help you buy at a better entry point today. For a future seller, it also means resale performance will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car’s expensive options and technology age over time.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

The safety content also notes that the car received top scores of Good in all IIHS tests.
Should I buy a 2017 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.22% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It’s an all-new redesign with a fresh chassis, updated engines, and a more engaging driver-focused feel.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $18,549, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $16,969 average.
- It adds the 530e plug-in hybrid, which broadens the lineup with a more frugal option.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2017 is the stronger buy because prices have softened and inventory is healthy. If you’re willing to pay more for the added plug-in hybrid option, the 2018 is the better secondary path.
