How much does the 2017 BMW 5 Series cost?

Prices have softened 4.81% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,097 listings available, which suggests a healthy amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2017 BMW 5 Series a good car?

Generally — 4/5 from owners and 7.83/10 from our experts, the 2017 BMW 5 Series is a thoroughly redesigned midsize luxury sedan that aims to blend efficiency, technology, and driving enjoyment. The overview describes it as all new, with a fresh chassis, updated iDrive, lighter high-strength materials, and new engines that increase power without increasing consumption.

The expert evaluation backs that up with strong marks for technology and safety, plus solid scores for look and feel and form and function. It is framed as a larger luxury sedan that still tries to move back toward a driver’s-car character, even if BMW’s restrained styling makes the redesign easy to miss at first glance.

The model scores 9/10 across Technology and Safety.

34.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2017 BMW 5 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The overview points to a redesigned platform with lighter materials and updated engines, while the expert evaluation emphasizes a well-sorted chassis, capable transmission, and strong engineering focus. The performance notes also describe the turbocharged four-cylinder as one of the best engines on the market, with smooth operation once warmed up and strong efficiency potential when driven calmly.

The cost-effectiveness notes add that the base car gives you a handsome sedan with a balanced chassis, comfortable interior, and capable drivetrain, but the value picture can change quickly once options pile on. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that a well-equipped example can be expensive to maintain and keep satisfying if it has been heavily optioned.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 BMW 5 Series?

At 58.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a full vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on cars with higher mileage or extensive option content. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven panel gaps, worn suspension components, and any evidence that expensive technology features are functioning properly.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 530i is the value-oriented choice, with an updated turbo 2.0-liter engine and a lower starting price than the 540i and M550i. The higher trims add more power, but the cost can climb quickly once options are added.
• Powertrain: The 530i uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, the 540i uses a turbo inline six, and the M550i uses a twin-turbo V8. The four-cylinder is praised for strong torque and efficiency, while the six-cylinder and V8 deliver much quicker acceleration.
• Safety package: The car offers blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep warning and intervention with side-collision avoidance, radar-controlled adaptive cruise, collision warning and intervention, pedestrian detection, traffic jam assistant, and automatic parking. Some of these systems are optional, so check whether a used example has the full suite.
• Infotainment: The sixth-generation iDrive system is central to the cabin, and this car can be equipped with gesture control. Apple CarPlay is available, but Android Auto is not.
• Fuel efficiency: The 530i is rated at 24 mpg city and 34 mpg highway, with a combined rating of 27 mpg.

Which 2017 BMW 5 Series trim should I buy?

The 2017 BMW 5 Series is offered in 3 trim levels: 530i, 540i, M550i.

Here's the short version:

• 530i: This is the best-value trim if you want the core 5 Series experience without chasing the highest price. It brings the updated turbo 2.0-liter engine, strong torque, and the most approachable entry point into the lineup.
• 540i: Choose this if you want a clear step up in power from the four-cylinder and prefer the turbo inline six’s stronger passing performance. It is the sweet spot for buyers who want more urgency without jumping to V8 pricing.
• M550i: Pick this if straight-line speed matters most. Its twin-turbo V8 delivers the quickest acceleration in the range and sits at the top of the standard gas lineup.

The safety content says the car earns top marks, including a Top Safety Pick+ rating and a five-star government safety rating.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 BMW 5 Series?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 34.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,097 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.81% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 58.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $16,721, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 BMW 5 Series's resale value?

The current average of $16,859 sits slightly below last year's $17,712.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, it also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car has been maintained and optioned.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 BMW 5 Series safe?

The 2017 BMW 5 Series earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS, with top Good scores in all tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The safety content highlights a broad suite of driver-assistance features, including blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep warning and intervention with side-collision avoidance, radar-controlled adaptive cruise, collision warning and intervention, pedestrian detection, traffic jam assistant, and automatic parking. Some of those systems are optional, so a used example may not have the full set.

Should I buy a 2017 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 34.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 58.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.81% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It’s a thoroughly redesigned year with a lighter chassis, new engines, and a stronger push back toward driver-focused character.

Consider the 2018 if:

• At $18,345, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $16,859 average.
• It adds a plug-in hybrid 530e, giving you a more efficiency-minded option.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2017 is the smarter buy because prices have eased and the redesign brings meaningful updates. If you want a newer-year option with a plug-in hybrid choice, the 2018 is worth the extra money, especially if efficiency matters more than outright value.
