In practical terms, that lines up well with the A4’s role as a redesigned entry-luxury sport sedan that feels modern and forward-looking rather than merely familiar.

Is the 2017 Audi A4 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.47/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable, with praise centered on its luxury, comfort, performance, and high-quality materials. The expert drive notes also emphasize how confidently the A4 puts power down and how composed it feels in everyday driving, which supports the impression of a car you can count on over time. Audi’s collision-avoidance systems and the car’s refined powertrain add to that sense of durability and everyday usability.

If you’re buying used, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the core driving experience and more about making sure the specific car you choose has been maintained properly and hasn’t accumulated hidden wear from prior use.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Audi A4?

At 56.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has any signs of prior bodywork or electronic-system issues. Focus on condition details that matter on a premium sedan: interior wear, technology operation, braking behavior, and whether the car’s safety and driver-assistance features work as intended. Because the A4 was offered with a wide spread of equipment, it’s also worth confirming exactly which features are present on the specific car you’re considering.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Premium trim includes front-wheel drive, a 7-speed automated manual transmission, 17-inch aluminum wheels, HID headlights, leather seats, triple-zone automatic climate control, a 10-speaker sound system, and forward-collision warning with front and rear automatic emergency braking. Premium Plus adds S-line exterior trim, larger 18-inch wheels, LED headlights, parking-assist sensors, a Bang & Olufsen sound system, passive keyless entry, and SOS emergency calling. Prestige adds Audi Virtual Cockpit, navigation with handwriting recognition, Audi Connect services, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, a head-up display, and a 360-degree top-view camera system.

• Powertrain: The A4 uses a direct-injected 2.0-liter turbocharged engine rated at 252 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. The engine is described as exceptionally broad in its power delivery and refined in operation, and the Quattro all-wheel-drive setup adds a self-locking center differential for stronger traction and a more planted feel.

• Safety package: Audi Pre-Sense Basic and Pre-Sense City are standard, along with forward collision warning, front and rear automatic emergency braking, and pedestrian detection. Higher trims add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic assist, lane-departure warning and assist, turn assist, Pre-Sense Rear, and automatic high-beam headlights. The most advanced driver-assistance features are reserved for the Prestige trim.

• Infotainment: The A4 can be equipped with an 8.3-inch MMI screen, Audi Virtual Cockpit on a 12.3-inch display, handwriting recognition, and Audi Connect services with a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. Premium Plus and Prestige trims also bring the 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen Surround Sound audio system.

• Fuel efficiency: Audi says the Quattro version returns 27 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2017 Audi A4 trim should I buy?

The 2017 Audi A4 is offered in 3 trim levels: Premium, Premium Plus, Prestige.

Here's the short version:

• Premium: This is the value play if you want the A4’s core strengths without paying for the upper-trim tech stack. You still get leather seats, climate control, and standard collision-avoidance equipment, so it covers the essentials well.

• Premium Plus: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the equipment that makes the A4 feel meaningfully more upscale, including LED headlights, parking sensors, passive keyless entry, and the upgraded Bang & Olufsen audio system.

• Prestige: Choose this if you want the most advanced technology and driver-assistance content, including Virtual Cockpit, navigation, blind-spot monitoring, a head-up display, and the surround-view camera system.

The Prestige trim is the only version with the most advanced adaptive cruise control, lane-assist, and adaptive damping suspension features.

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile opportunities.

• Deal availability: 35.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 891 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.99% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 56.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $13,420, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Audi A4's resale value?

The current average of $13,420 sits slightly below last year's $14,428.

That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a better entry point today. For a future seller, that also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment, because buyers will have plenty of comparable listings to choose from. Well-kept examples with desirable tech and clean history should hold up better than neglected cars with visible wear or missing features.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.47/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Audi A4 safe?

The 2017 Audi A4 earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Audi Pre-Sense Basic is standard, and Pre-Sense City adds forward collision warning, front and rear automatic emergency braking, and pedestrian detection. Higher trims add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic assist, lane-departure warning and assist, turn assist, Pre-Sense Rear, and automatic high-beam headlights. The most advanced safety and driver-assistance features are concentrated in the upper trims, so you should verify the exact equipment on any used example you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2017 Audi A4 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 35.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 56.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.99% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.47/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• For 2017, Audi’s redesign gives the A4 a fresh, forward-looking place in the brand’s lineup, with strong technology and a broad spread of standard and available safety features.

The bottom line: The 2017 A4 is the better choice if you want the redesigned car with strong tech, solid owner satisfaction, and a market that has already softened enough to create buying opportunities. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can still shop aggressively for a clean, well-equipped example and focus on condition and history first.
