CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Acura MDX

Summary
With 165 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,885, 40.0% of 2017 Acura MDX listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Acura MDX 4.75 / 5 stars.
87.3% of 2017 Acura MDX listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Acura MDX stands out as a three-row luxury SUV that blends a comfortable ride, strong safety credentials, and a practical cabin with room for seven. It was part of the third generation, which brought a re-engineered 3.5-liter V6 making 290 horsepower, and Acura also made front-wheel drive available for the first time to help improve fuel economy. That generation’s packaging strategy is another distinguishing trait: instead of traditional trims, Acura used packages to add features and technology, which helped make the MDX feel well equipped even in lower versions.
For 2017 specifically, the MDX gained a major refresh that removed the controversial grille and made all of its formerly optional safety systems standard. That year also marked the debut of the MDX Sport Hybrid, which paired a 3.0-liter V6 with three electric motors and produced 321 system horsepower. The hybrid was quicker and more efficient than the standard model, with up to 27 mpg combined and 26 mpg in city driving, making it the most distinctive version of the lineup for buyers who wanted extra performance and efficiency in one package.
There are tradeoffs, though. The third-generation MDX’s infotainment setup was not especially easy to use, and the cabin lost some room compared with the previous generation, including a smaller second row and less cargo space overall. Even so, the 2017 MDX remains appealing because it combines upscale features, solid reliability, and a useful third row in a package that feels more polished and more safety-focused than many rivals.

This car, the Acura MDX is a total surprise to me. The features are sophisticated and just the right amount of technology and swag that makes it an eye catching bang for my bucks. I came out of a Tahoe with great features and good looks that turned heads and attracted inquiries. My MDX is getting so many compliments and attention from my friends, family, and group members because the maintenance record was impressive and it has the look of luxury; it's a stylish vehicle, that boasts reliability second only to Toyota Lexus. I enjoy driving the MDX and the only thing missing is free oil changes.

How much does the 2017 Acura MDX cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $17,180 |
| Year-Round Low | $17,161 |
| Year-Round High | $18,565 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $18,570 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.48% |
Prices have softened 7.48% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,178 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.
Is the 2017 Acura MDX a good car?
Yes — the 4.75/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise the combination of luxury, space, and safety features, and they also like the smooth ride and spacious interior, especially with the available third row. For your needs, that makes it a strong fit if you want a practical three-row luxury SUV with a polished feel and family-friendly versatility. With 35.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is meaningful market opportunity if you shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Acura MDX reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with praise centered on the MDX’s comfort, safety, and overall quality. That kind of long-term confidence matters if you plan to keep the vehicle for several years.
For used buyers, the main risk is less about broad reliability concerns and more about finding a well-kept example with a clean history and consistent maintenance.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Acura MDX?
At 60.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from those with prior damage. After that, prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing has incomplete service records or visible cosmetic wear. Focus on overall condition, since a careful review of the cabin, body panels, and electronics can help you avoid a problem vehicle.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Acura MDX?
This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to compare options and enough deal activity to reward patience.
- Deal availability: 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,178 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.48% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,161, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Acura MDX's resale value?
The current average of $17,180 sits slightly below last year's $18,570.
That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favorable point, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays soft. If you sell later, your return will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and whether your MDX has a clean history. Strong presentation and documented maintenance will matter more when the broader market is already trending lower.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Acura MDX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.48% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $14,414, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $17,180 average.
- It emphasizes safety, athleticism, and refinement.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger overall value proposition, the 2017 is the better primary target because it combines a lower current market price than last year with strong owner satisfaction and plenty of listings to shop. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2016 is the better secondary path, especially if you find one in excellent condition and can live with its older-market pricing and feature set.
