CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Acura MDX

Summary
With 1,133 currently listed for sale and an average price of $17,671, 31.9% of 2017 Acura MDXs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Acura MDX 4.75 / 5 stars.
63.2% of 2017 MDX models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Acura MDX stands out as a three-row luxury SUV that blends comfort, practicality, and a strong reputation for quality. It was part of the third generation, which brought a new dual-screen infotainment setup, a re-engineered 3.5-liter V6 with 290 horsepower, and a more fuel-conscious approach than before. Acura also made front-wheel drive available for the first time, and the MDX could be had with packages rather than traditional trim levels, which helped spread more features across the lineup.
What makes the 2017 model especially notable is the refresh it received that year. Acura gave it a visual update that removed the controversial grille, made all of the MDX’s formerly optional safety systems standard, and introduced the MDX Sport Hybrid. That hybrid paired a 3.0-liter V6 with a trio of electric motors and produced 321 system horsepower, while also delivering up to 27 mpg combined and 26 mpg in city driving. For buyers who wanted a family SUV with more standard safety equipment and a more efficient powertrain option, that was a meaningful step forward.
Even so, the 2017 MDX was not perfect. The dual-screen infotainment system was still difficult to use, and the third row remained small. But the MDX’s comfortable ride, solid reliability reputation, and generous feature content made it appealing to shoppers who wanted a well-equipped luxury SUV with real utility.

This car, the Acura MDX is a total surprise to me. The features are sophisticated and just the right amount of technology and swag that makes it an eye catching bang for my bucks. I came out of a Tahoe with great features and good looks that turned heads and attracted inquiries. My MDX is getting so many compliments and attention from my friends, family, and group members because the maintenance record was impressive and it has the look of luxury; it's a stylish vehicle, that boasts reliability second only to Toyota Lexus. I enjoy driving the MDX and the only thing missing is free oil changes.

Is the 2017 Acura MDX reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback highlights a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience for many drivers, with particular praise for the MDX’s comfort and overall quality. The strong reputation for long-term satisfaction is a useful sign if you want a used luxury SUV you can count on. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the specific vehicle has been maintained well and checked carefully before you commit.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Acura MDX?
At 63.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can confirm accident records, title status, and ownership history. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing has higher mileage or incomplete service records. Focus your condition check on signs of prior bodywork, uneven panel gaps, and any interior or mechanical wear that suggests the vehicle has had a harder life than average.

The current average of $17,668 sits slightly below last year's $18,924.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, but it can also mean sellers need to price carefully to stay competitive. If you plan to resell later, the current trend implies you should expect value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and history. Well-kept examples should hold up better than average because shoppers still respond to the MDX’s comfort, space, and feature content.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Acura MDX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 63.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.64% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $14,644, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $17,668 average.
- It emphasizes safety, athleticism, and refinement.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around shopping case, the 2017 is the better primary target because it combines solid owner satisfaction with a softer market price and broad availability. If your main goal is to spend less upfront, the 2016 is the better secondary path, especially if you find one in excellent condition and can live with its older-market positioning.
