Is the 2016 Volvo XC90 a good car?

The market also looks reasonably supportive, with 35.5% of listings priced as good or great deals.

Is the 2016 Volvo XC90 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.56/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner summary points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience for many shoppers, with comfort and safety standing out as recurring strengths. The expert notes also emphasize a smooth start/stop system and a cabin that stays quiet and composed, which reinforces the sense that this is a vehicle built to be easy to live with over time.

Volvo also includes 3 years/36,000 miles of factory scheduled maintenance, which can help reduce early ownership hassle.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a premium SUV like this can become expensive if prior maintenance was skipped or if wear items were neglected.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Volvo XC90?

At 69% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with a lower asking price. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and evidence of prior bodywork or repair quality so you can separate a clean, well-kept SUV from one that may have hidden issues.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Momentum is already well equipped, but the Inscription adds more luxury-focused touches, while the R-Design brings a performance-oriented appearance and available package content. The base trim still includes standard safety features that many rivals reserve for options, so you should compare equipment carefully before paying more for a higher trim.
• Powertrain: The XC90 offers a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder in T5 models, a more powerful turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter in T6 models, and a hybrid option for buyers who want the strongest efficiency focus. The T5 is the only front-wheel-drive choice, while the T6 and T8 are all-wheel drive only.
• Safety package: Standard driver-assistance features include collision avoidance with pedestrian and cyclist detection and avoidance, driver alert, lane-departure warnings, road-sign information, and roll stability control. Optional upgrades add blind-spot information, cross-traffic alerts, a 360-degree surround-view camera, adaptive cruise control with pilot assist, lane-keeping aid, front park assist, and park-assist pilot.
• Infotainment: You get a 9-inch Sensus touchscreen, built-in hotspot capability, and optional Apple CarPlay. The system is designed for easy swipe-and-tap use, and the display can be used with gloves on.
• Fuel efficiency: The XC90 is rated at 20 mpg city/25 highway, and the expert notes that premium fuel is recommended.

Which 2016 Volvo XC90 trim should I buy?

The 2016 Volvo XC90 is offered in 3 trim levels: Momentum, Inscription, and R-Design.

Here's the short version:

• Momentum: This is the best-value starting point because it already includes a long list of standard safety and convenience features, plus the upscale cabin materials that make the XC90 feel premium even at the entry level. If you want the most XC90 for the money, this is the trim to start with.
• Inscription: Choose this if you want a more luxurious feel, including added comfort and upscale touches such as power side bolsters. It suits you best if cabin refinement matters more than sporty styling.
• R-Design: Pick this if you want the sportier-looking version and the performance-focused character described in the content. It also has its own climate package availability, which may matter if you live in a colder climate.

Safety content notes that several useful driver-assistance features are optional rather than standard, so you should verify which package content is included on any used example you’re considering.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Volvo XC90?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully and compare listings.

• Deal availability: 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 729 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.73% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 69.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $13,817, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Volvo XC90's resale value?

The current average of $13,817 sits slightly below last year's $15,652.

That decline suggests the XC90 has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help you as a buyer today. For a future seller, it means resale value may be steadier if you keep the SUV in excellent condition and maintain it well, but you should still expect a premium luxury SUV to lose value over time.

The current pricing also suggests that the market is rewarding well-kept examples more than average ones, so service history and condition will matter when you eventually sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.56/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Volvo XC90 safe?

The XC90 earns the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick+ rating and Good results across every category mentioned.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, LED daytime running lights, a suite of airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, tire pressure monitoring, whiplash protection, and electronic stability control. Standard driver-assistance features include collision avoidance with pedestrian and cyclist detection and avoidance, driver alert, lane-departure warnings, road-sign information, and roll stability control.

Optional safety features include a 360-degree surround-view camera, adaptive cruise control with pilot assist, blind-spot information with cross-traffic alerts, front park assist, lane-keeping aid, and park-assist pilot. That means some of the most advanced aids are not standard on every used example, so you should confirm package content before you buy.

Should I buy a 2016 Volvo XC90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 69% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.73% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.56/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Volvo’s all-new XC90 brings a luxury interior, strong safety focus, and flexible seating for 5 or 7 passengers.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, safety, and family-friendly utility, the 2016 XC90 is a strong used buy. If you’re shopping primarily for the newest tech or want to compare against a newer XC90 with updated connectivity and features, it’s worth cross-shopping nearby model years; if price is your top priority, the 2016’s softened market and broad inventory make it especially worth a look.
