Used 2016 Volkswagen Passat for Sale nearVirginia Beach, VA

How much does the 2016 Volkswagen Passat cost?

Prices have softened 4.46% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 809 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of used Passats to compare.

Is the 2016 Volkswagen Passat a good car?

Yes — the 5/5 user rating and 7.83/10 expert rating point to a strong overall package. The Passat is framed as a midsize family sedan that prioritizes practicality over flash, and the expert review says buyers who look past the conservative styling may find an excellent everyday sedan. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Safety.

That combination makes sense if you want a roomy, straightforward family sedan with strong road manners and a comfort-first ride. The market also shows 32.0% of listings as good or great deals, which suggests there are worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2016 Volkswagen Passat reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The expert review also points to average reliability predictions, but it notes that owners have consistently complained mostly about infotainment systems rather than mechanical issues. The performance writeup emphasizes a robust turbocharged engine, smooth automatic shifting, and a car that feels more powerful than its numbers suggest. Cost-of-ownership commentary also highlights strong fuel economy for a large sedan.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that reputation and electronics concerns may matter more than the car’s underlying mechanical strengths.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Volkswagen Passat?

At 53% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-trim car with more equipment. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the electronics and driver-assistance features work as intended. Because the Passat’s appeal is tied to value and practicality, condition matters a lot when you compare listings.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The S trim starts with the smallest 5-inch screen, while SE, SEL, and SEL Premium move up to a 6.3-inch display and add more available convenience and safety equipment. The R-Line brings dark gray 19-inch wheels and subtle styling changes, but it cannot be paired with some of the key safety technologies mentioned for other trims.
• Powertrain: Most cars use the standard turbocharged 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine with 170 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, and the optional V6 is reserved for the top SEL Premium trim. The engine is tuned for strong low-end torque and returns 29 mpg in combined driving.
• Safety package: The Passat earns Top Safety Pick status, and SE, SEL, and SEL Premium trim also meet Top Safety Pick+ standards thanks to forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking. Standard equipment includes a reversing camera and Automatic Post-Collision Braking, while blind-spot warning with lane-change alert and rear cross-traffic alert is standard on SEL and SEL Premium and available on SE.
• Infotainment: Base trims get a 5-inch touchscreen, while SE, SEL, and SEL Premium use a 6.3-inch screen. App-Connect brings Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and MirrorLink, and the larger system can also include Car-Net subscription features.
• Fuel efficiency: The standard engine is rated at 29 mpg in combined driving, and the review’s test loop returned 29.7 mpg. The same writeup also notes 24.8 mpg during a more demanding video-shoot cycle.

Which 2016 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?

The 2016 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, SEL Premium V6, and R-Line.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Passat’s roomy cabin and efficient turbocharged powertrain. You give up the larger infotainment screen and much of the advanced safety and convenience content, so it’s best if price matters most.
• SE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the larger 6.3-inch infotainment screen, App-Connect smartphone projection, adaptive cruise control, and the key forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking systems. It also gets the strongest balance of everyday comfort, safety, and value.
• R-Line: Choose this if you care most about appearance, since it adds dark gray 19-inch wheels and subtle styling changes. It is less compelling if you want the most complete safety and tech mix, because the review specifically notes feature limitations on this trim.
• SEL Premium V6: This is the top choice if you want the most equipment, including the optional V6, navigation, Fender premium audio, front and rear parking sensors, and Parking Steering Assistant. It also adds the most advanced safety content, including active blind-spot warning and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist.

For safety-focused shoppers, the SE, SEL, and SEL Premium trims are the ones that qualify for Top Safety Pick+ standards.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Volkswagen Passat?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market if you’re willing to compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 809 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.46% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 53.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $9,110, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?

The current average of $9,301 sits slightly below last year's $9,735.

That softer pricing suggests the Passat is currently in a buyer-friendly phase, which can help you if you’re shopping now but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. Still, the model’s practical strengths and strong owner satisfaction can help support demand among shoppers who want a roomy midsize sedan. If you buy well and keep the car in good condition, you should be able to stay competitive in the used market.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Volkswagen Passat safe?

The 2016 Volkswagen Passat earns Top Safety Pick status from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and SE, SEL, and SEL Premium trim also meet Top Safety Pick+ standards because of forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking. It also earns five-star ratings from the federal government.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The safety package is a major strength here: standard equipment includes a reversing camera and Automatic Post-Collision Braking, while SE adds adaptive cruise control and can be optioned with blind-spot warning, lane-change alert, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic reverse braking. SEL and SEL Premium make blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert standard, and SEL Premium adds active blind-spot intervention plus lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist.

One caveat is that the R-Line cannot be equipped with some of the key safety technologies highlighted for the other trims, so trim choice matters a lot if safety is your priority.

Should I buy a 2016 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 53% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.46% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 brings a strong safety package, including Top Safety Pick+ availability on higher trims and standard post-collision braking.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $10,643, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $9,301 average.
• It adds standard blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, and VW App Connect on trims above the base S.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2016 is the smarter buy because it combines a lower average price with strong safety and solid owner satisfaction. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer model with broader standard tech and safety content, the 2017 is the cleaner upgrade path.
