What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Volkswagen Jetta?

At 50.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had prior body damage or repair work. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the car’s equipment matches the trim you want, since some desirable features were optional rather than standard. It’s also worth checking for the missing-feature complaints mentioned by owners, especially if you expect a backup camera or other convenience tech.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The S starts with 15-inch steel wheels, heated mirrors, keyless entry, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, full power, air conditioning, and a 5-inch touchscreen. The S Tech Package adds a 6.3-inch touchscreen, USB port, satellite radio, rear-view camera, and smartphone integration, while the SE adds 16-inch alloys, push-button start, and heated front seats. The 1.8T Sport adds the larger engine, sport suspension, and 17-inch alloys, while the 1.8T SEL adds a softer suspension tune, unique 17-inch alloys, keyless entry and ignition, an upgraded interior, automatic headlights and wipers, and a sunroof.
• Powertrain: The new 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder makes 150 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque from just 1,400 rpm, with 28 mpg city/39 highway/32 combined using the 6-speed automatic and 33 combined with the 5-speed manual. The 1.8-liter turbo adds 20 hp up high and returns 25 mpg city/36 highway/29 combined with the automatic. The 2.0-liter turbo offers 210 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque with a 6.5-second 0-60 time.
• Safety package: The Driver Assistance package adds adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and frontal collision avoidance with automatic braking. Those features are especially important on 1.8T trims, where they are part of the safety-tech upgrade.
• Infotainment: The upgraded setup centers on a 6.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus an actual USB port. The S Tech Package is the key path to that setup, and it also adds rear-view camera functionality.
• Fuel efficiency: The 1.4-liter turbo returns 28 mpg city/39 highway/32 combined with the automatic and 33 combined with the manual. The 1.8-liter turbo returns 25 mpg city/36 highway/29 combined with the automatic, while the 2.0-liter turbo returns 24 city mpg/33 highway/27 combined with the DSG.

Which 2016 Volkswagen Jetta trim should I buy?

The 2016 Volkswagen Jetta is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, 1.8T Sport, 1.8T SEL.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the least expensive path into the Jetta, but the key thing to know is that the most useful tech upgrades are not standard here. If you want the best value, this trim makes sense only if you are comfortable keeping equipment simple and adding the right package.
• SE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds 16-inch alloys, push-button start, and heated front seats without jumping into the more expensive 1.8T models. If you want a balanced mix of comfort and price, this is the one to target.
• 1.8T Sport: This trim is for you if you want the stronger engine and sport suspension, plus 17-inch alloys. It gives the Jetta a more performance-oriented feel, but it drops the sunroof.
• 1.8T SEL: This is the most upscale gas trim, with a softer suspension tune, unique 17-inch alloys, keyless entry and ignition, an upgraded interior, automatic headlights and wipers, and a sunroof. It suits you if comfort and features matter more than value.

The safety-tech upgrade is especially important on 1.8T trims, where the Driver Assistance package adds adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and frontal collision avoidance with automatic braking.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Volkswagen Jetta?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it pays to compare listings carefully and move quickly on strong examples.

• Deal availability: 28.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,018 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.30% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 50.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $8,819, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Volkswagen Jetta's resale value?

The current average of $9,178 sits slightly below last year's $9,491.

That softer pricing suggests the market has become a little more favorable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to be realistic about expectations. If you buy well and keep the car in strong condition, you can help protect value, but the current trend shows that this model year is not appreciating. The good news is that the Jetta still has broad appeal thanks to its fuel economy, safety, and everyday usability, which can help support demand later.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Volkswagen Jetta safe?

The 2016 Volkswagen Jetta earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal impact tests and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave it its highest rating of Good in all tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The Jetta includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and frontal collision avoidance with automatic braking through the Driver Assistance package. Standard safety equipment also includes traction and stability control, 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, front-side and side-curtain airbags, and active head restraints. The main caveat is that some of the most useful driver-assistance features are tied to higher trims or packages rather than being standard across the lineup.

Should I buy a 2016 Volkswagen Jetta or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 28.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 50.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.30% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The new 1.4-liter turbocharged engine and touchscreen upgrades make it feel more modern and more competitive.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $8,025, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $9,178 average.
• It works well as a versatile daily driver for commuting, errands, and family use.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $10,324, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $9,178 average.
• It adds a standard reversing camera and reshuffles safety features across a slimmer trim lineup.

The bottom line: the 2016 is the right pick if you want the newer engine, better tech, and strong safety at a still-reasonable price. If your priority is saving money, the 2015 is the better value play, while the 2017 makes sense if you want the added convenience of a standard reversing camera.
