What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Volkswagen Jetta?

At 51.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. A pre-purchase inspection is especially useful here, since you’ll want to check for signs of accident repair, uneven panel gaps, and any issues tied to the turbocharged engine or electronics. Focus on condition and maintenance records, not just the asking price.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 1.4T S starts with 15-inch steel wheels, heated mirrors, keyless entry, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, full power, air conditioning, and a 5-inch touchscreen. The 1.4T SE adds 16-inch alloys, push-button start, and heated front seats, while the 1.8T Sport brings the larger engine, sport suspension, and 17-inch alloys. The 1.8T SEL adds a softer suspension tune, unique 17-inch alloys, keyless entry and ignition, an upgraded interior, automatic headlights and wipers, and a sunroof. The 1.4T SE is the best-value trim if you want the strongest mix of comfort and equipment.
• Powertrain: The new 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder makes 150 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque from low rpm, and it is paired with a 6-speed automatic or 5-speed manual. The 1.8-liter turbo adds more high-rpm power, while the 2.0-liter turbo is the quickest option with 210 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque.
• Safety package: The Driver Assistance package adds adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and frontal collision avoidance with automatic braking. Those features are especially important on 1.8T trims.
• Infotainment: The upgraded setup uses a 6.3-inch touchscreen, adds an actual USB port, and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The S Tech Package also adds a rear-view camera and smartphone integration.
• Fuel efficiency: The 1.4-liter turbo returns 28 mpg city/39 highway/32 combined with the 6-speed automatic, or 33 combined with the manual. The 1.8-liter turbo returns 25 mpg city/36 highway/29 combined, and the 2.0-liter turbo returns 24 mpg city/33 highway/27 combined with the DSG.

Which 2016 Volkswagen Jetta trim should I buy?

The 2016 Volkswagen Jetta is offered in 4 trim levels: 1.4T S, 1.4T SE, 1.8T Sport, 1.8T SEL.

Here's the short version:

• 1.4T S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Jetta experience at the lowest price. It makes sense if you want the car’s new engine, basic comfort, and a simple way into the lineup.
• 1.4T SE: This is the best-value trim because it adds the most useful everyday upgrades, including 16-inch alloys, push-button start, and heated front seats. If you want the sweet spot between price and comfort, this is the one to target.
• 1.8T Sport: Choose this if you want the larger engine and a sport suspension. It is the right pick if you care more about stronger acceleration and a firmer driving feel than extra luxury features.
• 1.8T SEL: This trim is for you if you want the more upscale interior, automatic headlights and wipers, keyless entry and ignition, and a sunroof. It is the most comfort-focused choice in the lineup.

Should I buy a 2016 Volkswagen Jetta or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 51.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.77% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The new 1.4-liter turbocharged engine and touchscreen upgrades make this year feel much more modern.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $7,979, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $8,991 average.
• It’s a practical daily driver with engaging road manners.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $10,241, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $8,991 average.
• It adds a standard reversing camera and a trimmed-up safety feature mix.

The bottom line: You should start with the 2016 if you want the best balance of price, updated tech, and stronger performance. If your budget is tighter, the 2015 can still make sense, but the 2016 is the better all-around pick for most shoppers.

How does the 2016 Volkswagen Jetta compare to the 2016 Honda Civic?

Our experts score the 2016 Volkswagen Jetta 7.7/10 and the 2016 Honda Civic 8/10.

The Jetta is the value play here: it has a much lower average used price and still delivers strong fuel economy, a roomy cabin, and a solid safety score. The Civic costs more, but it brings a slightly stronger engine, better mpg, and a larger pool of listings.

If you want the cheaper buy with good comfort and a modernized feel, the Jetta is the easier recommendation. If you can spend more and want the stronger all-around package, the Civic has the edge.
