Why it stands out
The 2016 Toyota Sienna stands out as a minivan that already offered an impressive suite of technology, with Siri Eyes Free adding voice activation for iPhone users. That feature gives the Sienna extra utility and a bit of added safety, making it especially appealing to drivers who want family-hauling practicality without giving up modern convenience.
Beyond that tech upgrade, the Sienna’s appeal comes from its long-running reputation as a leader in the minivan segment. The available owner feedback reinforces that image, pointing to comfort, spaciousness, and a wide variety of features as major strengths. Some drivers also praised the value and more upscale feel of the limited edition models, especially the sound system and interior design.
There are a couple of tradeoffs to keep in mind. Some owners noted that engine noise can be noticeable during acceleration, and getting in and out of the car seats may be challenging for some. Even so, the 2016 Toyota Sienna remains distinctive for combining family-friendly space with a strong feature set and a useful voice-control upgrade.

The features are great especially the right blind spot display. This car is a great value. The only thing missing is leather seats. I can’t compare it to any other models since this one is a special edition.

Reviewed a 2016 Toyota Sienna on Oct 14, 2020
We looked at the Honda and Toyota minivans. We ended up purchasing the Sienna. It is a great vehicle, great value, very comfortable. Prior to purchasing the vehicle the two negative reviews I found were the engine is loud when accelerating and the car seats are hard to get in and out. I did not even notice the engine noise so that is a non-issue for me but the car seats were a little tricky. We leave our car seats in for extended periods of time (only take out to clean) so its really not a big deal. If we took them out every day I could see how this would be annoying but the fact that they essentially live in the car I really dont care. All the extra features are really nice too, automatic doors with buttons on the key fob, build in sun screens, electronics are really nice and responsive, the interior space and head room is massive. We really enjoy this vehicle and will have it for a long time.

| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $17,470 |

| Year-Round High | $17,959.21 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $17,767 |

Prices have softened 1.67% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,107 listings available, which suggests you have a workable amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $16,190.73, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Toyota Sienna a good car?
Yes — the 5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 7.67/10. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise the Sienna for its comfort, spaciousness, and wide variety of features. The owner feedback also highlights the value and upscale feel of the limited edition models, especially the sound system and interior design.
That lines up well with the Sienna’s family-hauling mission in the overview: you get practical space, useful tech, and a cabin that aims to make daily life easier. The market also shows 30.9% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Toyota Sienna reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. Owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free reputation, with comfort, spaciousness, and feature content reinforcing the sense that this is a vehicle people can count on.
The expert evaluation also describes the Sienna as a long-running class leader for reliability, even while noting that recent tests showed a slight dip after the refresh. On the ownership side, the cost-effectiveness notes mention a recall on front seatbelts for this model year, so a careful used-car check is still smart.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure a specific example has been maintained well and addressed any recall-related or wear-related issues.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Sienna?
At 52.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the van has had bodywork or higher mileage. Focus on condition details that matter in a family vehicle: seat operation, interior wear, electronics, and signs of hard use. If you’re comparing multiple listings, the cleanest example with the best maintenance history is usually worth the extra effort.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base L trim includes automatic headlights, windshield-wiper heaters, tri-zone automatic climate control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a rear-view camera in a 6.1-inch touchscreen, Siri Eyes Free, and 17-inch alloys. The LE adds heated side mirrors, power-sliding doors, an 8-way power driver’s seat, an upgraded stereo with HD and satellite radio, a 7-inch touchscreen, privacy glass, and Scout GPS Link app compatibility.
- Powertrain: Every Sienna uses a 3.5-liter V6 with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It makes 266 hp and 245 lb-ft of torque, and the FWD version is rated at 18 mpg city and 25 highway for a combined 21 mpg; AWD drops to 16/23 and a combined 19 mpg.
- Safety package: Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise, and forward-collision warning can be added via packages or standalone options. The Advanced Technology package is available for FWD Siennas, while AWD versions miss out on that package.
- Infotainment: The base setup uses a 6.1-inch touchscreen, and higher trims move to a 7.0-inch screen with enhanced connectivity. The rear entertainment system with Driver Easy Speak is a standout feature, and the tech content also notes that some safety and convenience features are package-based.
- Fuel efficiency: The FWD model returns 18 mpg city and 25 highway, while AWD returns 16 mpg city and 23 highway.
Which 2016 Toyota Sienna trim should I buy?
The 2016 Toyota Sienna is offered in 6 trim levels: L, LE, SE, SE Premium, XLE, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The L is well equipped, but it still lacks the upgraded stereo, larger touchscreen, power-sliding doors, and other convenience upgrades found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: The LE is the best value for many shoppers because it adds power-sliding doors, an 8-way power driver’s seat, a better stereo, a larger touchscreen, and smartphone-based navigation support.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the most luxurious choice, with premium leather, navigation, a heated steering wheel, parking sensors, auto power-folding mirrors, and a 10-speaker JBL audio system.
- Off-road trim: None of the trims are aimed at off-road use, so there isn’t a special daily-driver caution to flag here.
The safety-content note to keep in mind is that blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise, and forward-collision warning are available, but some of those features depend on trim or package selection.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Sienna?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,107 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.67% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 52.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,190.73, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Toyota Sienna's resale value?
The current average of $17,470 sits slightly below last year's $17,767.
That modest decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, the softer pricing trend means you should be realistic about appreciation, but the Sienna’s strong demand profile still supports value retention. The combination of broad family appeal and strong owner satisfaction should help keep buyer interest steady over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Toyota Sienna safe?
Both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have awarded their top scores overall for the Sienna, with only the NHTSA’s total frontal crash and the IIHS’s small overlap frontal-crash tests receiving the second-highest ratings.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Sienna includes traction and stability control, a full suite of airbags including driver’s knee and curtain-length coverage, and available blind-spot and cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise, and forward-collision warning. The safety writeup also notes that the Sienna’s stopping distance is middle-of-the-pack for minivans, so it’s strong overall but not class-leading in every dynamic measure.
Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Sienna or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 52.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.67% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The addition of Siri Eyes Free gives this year extra utility and a bit of safety for iPhone users.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $15,351, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $17,470 average.
- It was described as the best version of the Sienna yet, with major upgrades across the board.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market mix of features, satisfaction, and pricing flexibility, the 2016 is the better all-around pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the smarter value play and still brings many of the same core strengths.
