CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Toyota RAV4

Summary
With 2,331 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,425.00, 29.3% of 2016 Toyota RAV4s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Toyota RAV4 4.62 / 5 stars.
52.8% of 2016 RAV4 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Toyota RAV4 stands out as a practical compact SUV that had already become a benchmark for the segment by this point. In its fourth-generation form, it combined useful everyday packaging with a more mature design, and the 2016 update added style and equipment changes along with the new hybrid. Toyota also expanded the active-safety roster that year to include standard automatic emergency braking, plus optional lane departure warnings, rear cross traffic alerts, and adaptive cruise control with lane centering. For buyers who value features and peace of mind, that mix of practicality and safety equipment is a major part of the RAV4’s appeal.
It also offered a straightforward, easy-to-live-with driving experience. The 2016 model’s updated styling brought LED exterior lighting and a redesigned front end, while the cabin gained more sound insulation and an optional 7.0-inch screen alongside the previous 6.1-inch unit. The hybrid was a particular highlight, pairing a 150-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder with a trio of electric motors for 194 system horsepower and standard all-wheel drive, while returning up to 32 mpg combined. That said, the RAV4 was still not especially exciting to drive, and its interior remained fairly plain, with owners also noting that it could be rougher and noisier than expected.

I like the way they handle on the open road. The ride is smooth and the accommodations are extremely comfortable. The built in back parking camera is a great feature that comes in handy for numerous driving needs. Mileage isnt bad. The construction is solid. If you have a family and want to keep them protected, I encourage you to do some independent research on the chasis design and the safety features that Toyota puts into their vehicles. I will stick to Toyotas because of everything that goes into them at every level.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota RAV4?
At 52.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, since prior damage can affect value and future repair needs. Put a pre-purchase inspection near the top of your checklist, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on overall condition, maintenance evidence, and signs of past bodywork so you can separate a clean example from one that only looks good on paper.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota RAV4?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 26.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,377 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 52.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,423.13, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Toyota RAV4's resale value?
The current average of $16,194 sits slightly above last year's $16,131.
That small increase suggests the market has stayed stable rather than swinging sharply in either direction. For you as a future seller, that kind of pricing pattern can be helpful because it points to predictable demand and less risk of sudden value erosion. The RAV4’s broad appeal as a practical compact SUV also helps support steady interest when it’s time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Toyota RAV4 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 26.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 52.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $14,902, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $16,194 average.
- It offers practical space and efficiency in an easy-to-like package.
The bottom line: If you want the better-equipped, more current-feeling choice, the 2016 is the stronger default pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the better value-oriented alternative, especially if you find a clean example with solid history.
