overall

Summary
With 282 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,834, 31.9% of 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrids for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
60.3% of 2016 RAV4 Hybrid models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid stands out by pairing a hybrid drivetrain with a crossover SUV body, giving it an unusual mix of efficiency and utility. Toyota presents it as a hybrid SUV that can be capable and efficient at the same time, and the result is a compact SUV that aims to do more than the typical hybrid formula.
What makes it especially distinctive is how Toyota positions it in the market. The RAV4 Hybrid is described as competing with mainstream compact SUVs such as the Ford Escape and Honda CR-V, while Toyota also says it can be more efficient, more capable, and more versatile. That combination gives it broad appeal for buyers who want hybrid fuel savings without giving up the practicality expected from a crossover.

Reviewed a 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid on Oct 4, 2022
I was between this car and the 2020 Kia niro. I’ve only been driving the RAV4 hybrid for a few days but I’m so in love. It drives so smoothly and is incredibly quiet. The space inside is more comfortable than the niro with better acceleration and power in general. I’m currently averaging about 36MPG. It’s awesome.

How much does the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $18,866 |
| Year-Round Low | $16,803 |
| Year-Round High | $19,328 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $17,813 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +5.91% |
Prices are up 5.91% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 287 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid a good car?
Yes — 5/5. It earns an 7.5/10 from our experts, and the model scores 8/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.
The 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is built around a hybrid SUV formula that aims to give you efficiency without giving up crossover usefulness. Toyota positions it as a compact SUV that can be more efficient, more capable, and more versatile than the typical hybrid, and the expert review backs up that use-case framing with strong marks for practicality, value, and safety.
The market also shows healthy interest, with 31.7% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The expert review describes the RAV4 Hybrid as a capable and efficient hybrid SUV, and it notes that the powertrain delivers strong performance for the segment while still returning impressive fuel economy. It also highlights a well-weighted steering feel and a ride that stays composed over bumps, which supports the sense that this is a well-rounded daily driver.
Toyota’s hybrid setup is presented as a straightforward, proven combination of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder and electric motors, and the review emphasizes that the vehicle can be both efficient and capable. The cost-effectiveness commentary also suggests that the hybrid version is a smart buy if you were already shopping the RAV4 lineup.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the hybrid system and overall condition have been maintained properly, since repairs on a neglected hybrid can be more expensive than on a simpler gas-only SUV.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid?
At 59.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the hybrid system and electronics behave as expected during a test drive.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The cabin is described as a strong blend of form and function, and the Limited adds a near-luxury feel with a two-tone interior, leatherette, and soft-touch materials. The XLE is the more basic choice, while the Limited is the better-equipped option if you want a more upscale interior.
- Powertrain: The hybrid setup uses a 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder with three electric motors for 194 net horsepower and electronic all-wheel drive. It is also rated at 34 mpg city, 31 highway, and 33 combined, and the review notes that it feels stronger than the non-hybrid RAV4.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P includes pre-collision sensing and avoidance, pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert, auto-dimming high beams, and dynamic radar cruise control. The review also mentions a rear-view camera and an available bird’s-eye-view camera with proximity sensors.
- Infotainment: Both XLE and Limited trims use Toyota’s 6.1-inch touchscreen navigation system. The system includes Bluetooth, USB connectivity, apps, and voice-control access, but it does not offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA rates it at 34 mpg city, 31 highway, and 33 combined, and the review says real-world driving returned around 33 and 34 mpg in combined city and highway use.
Which 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid trim should I buy?
The 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is offered in 2 trim levels: XLE and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- XLE: This is the better-value choice if you want the hybrid powertrain, the 6.1-inch touchscreen navigation system, and the smaller wheels with larger tires that the review says should ride more comfortably over bumps. It gives you the core hybrid experience without paying for the more upscale cabin treatment.
- Limited: This is the trim to choose if you want the most premium version of the RAV4 Hybrid. It adds a two-tone interior, extensive leatherette and soft-touch materials, and a near-luxury feel, making it the right pick if comfort and cabin presentation matter most.
Toyota Safety Sense P is the key safety package to look for, and it brings pre-collision sensing and avoidance, pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert, auto-dimming high beams, and dynamic radar cruise control.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully rather than rush.
- Deal availability: 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 287 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 5.91% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 59.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,803, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid's resale value?
The current average of $18,866 sits slightly above last year's $17,813.
That upward move suggests the market has been willing to pay more for this model year, which can help support resale value if you buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition. The fact that prices are already above last year’s level also means future sellers may benefit from steady demand rather than a soft market.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid safe?
The 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense P is the named driver-assistance suite, and it includes pre-collision sensing and avoidance, pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert, auto-dimming high beams, and dynamic radar cruise control. The review also calls out the full complement of front and side impact airbags, plus a rear-view camera and an available bird’s-eye-view camera with proximity sensors.
That combination makes the RAV4 Hybrid feel well equipped for its class, especially if you want active safety tech in a mainstream compact SUV. The review does not flag a major safety shortcoming, but you should still verify which safety features are present on the specific trim you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 5.91% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert review says the RAV4 Hybrid can be more efficient, more capable, and more versatile than the typical hybrid SUV, while still competing with mainstream compact SUVs.
The bottom line: If you want this generation’s hybrid efficiency and crossover practicality, the 2016 is a solid target, especially if you find a clean example with the right equipment. If you’re more price-sensitive, keep shopping carefully for a well-maintained listing near the low end of the range, since the market still shows enough inventory to compare options.
