How much does the 2016 Toyota Prius cost?

Prices are up 1.61% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.

There are 702 listings available, which gives you a decent amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2016 Toyota Prius a good car?

Yes — it earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.7/10 expert rating. The 2016 Prius is presented as the standard bearer for the hybrid segment, and it keeps the familiar fuel-saving identity that made the nameplate so recognizable while adding a few new tricks. It is aimed at you if you want a daily driver with strong efficiency, solid ergonomics, and impressive cargo space. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.

The market also shows 31.5% good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile listings to find.

Is the 2016 Toyota Prius reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2016 Prius is framed as a proven hybrid with staying power, and its expert write-up emphasizes the brand’s long-running reputation in the segment. Its hybrid system is described as effective, and the performance notes point to a car that drives surprisingly well once underway, with decent pickup and good cornering. The cost-effectiveness notes also point to competitive pricing and a package that should appeal to buyers who want to save fuel without giving up everyday usability.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the hybrid system and braking feel are in good shape before you commit.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Prius?

At 51.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a prior accident. Focus on body condition, panel alignment, and any signs that repairs were done poorly. It also makes sense to confirm that the hybrid system, brakes, and electronics are operating normally.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Two trim gets the 6.1-inch touchscreen, reversing camera, Bluetooth voice activation, and Siri Eyes Free, while higher trims add a 7-inch touchscreen, navigation, and more connected features. The head-up display is only available on uprated trims, so base models miss that convenience feature.
• Powertrain: The Prius uses a 1.8-liter gas engine with two electric motor-generators for a net 121 horsepower. The Base model uses a nickel-metal-hydride battery, while every other trim gets a more compact lithium-ion battery pack.
• Safety package: Every Prius comes with Toyota’s Star Safety System, including enhanced vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop Technology, plus advanced front- and side-impact airbags. The Four adds Pre-Collision Avoidance with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, automatic high-beams, and dynamic radar cruise control, while the Four and Four Touring also add a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert.
• Infotainment: The Two and Two Eco come with a 6.1-inch touchscreen, 6 speakers, USB 2.0 input, aux audio jack, reversing camera, Bluetooth voice activation, and Siri Eyes Free. The Three, Three Touring, Four, and Four Touring upgrade to a 7-inch touchscreen, a 3-month trial of XM satellite radio, the Entune app suite, navigation, and HD predictive traffic with Doppler weather overlay.
• Fuel efficiency: Fuel economy is estimated at 54 mpg city/50 highway/52 combined, and the Two Eco improves that to 58/53/56.

Which 2016 Toyota Prius trim should I buy?

The 2016 Toyota Prius is offered in 6 trim levels: Two, Two Eco, Three, Three Touring, Four, Four Touring.

Here's the short version:

• Two: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Prius experience with the 6.1-inch touchscreen, reversing camera, Bluetooth voice activation, and Siri Eyes Free. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and the essential hybrid package.
• Two Eco: This is the best-value trim if your priority is maximum efficiency, since it adds the stronger fuel-economy estimate while keeping the lower-end equipment set. Choose it if you want the most mileage-focused version without moving up the lineup.
• Three: This is the smart step-up if you want the 7-inch touchscreen, navigation, and the broader Entune app suite. It adds more everyday convenience without jumping all the way to the higher-priced trims.
• Three Touring: This trim keeps the Three’s tech upgrades and adds the Touring treatment, so it suits you if you want a more upscale-feeling middle ground.
• Four: This is the trim to target if safety tech matters most, because it adds Pre-Collision Avoidance with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, automatic high-beams, and dynamic radar cruise control. It is the best choice if you want the most advanced standard driver-assistance content.
• Four Touring: This is the top trim, combining the Four’s safety technology with the Touring designation and the most complete feature set. Choose it if you want the most fully equipped Prius and are willing to pay for it.

The safety package steps up meaningfully on the Four and Four Touring, so those trims are the ones to prioritize if driver assistance is a must-have.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Prius?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.

• Deal availability: 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 702 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.61% year-over-year.
• Clean inventory: 51.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $14,193, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Toyota Prius's resale value?

The current average of $15,153 sits slightly above last year's $14,912.

That upward move suggests the market is still willing to pay for this model year, which can help support resale strength if you buy well. The year-over-year increase also points to steady demand rather than a softening market, so a clean, well-kept example should remain easier to move later. If you keep mileage, condition, and accident history in check, you should be in a better position when it is time to sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Toyota Prius safe?

The 2016 Toyota Prius earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Every Prius comes with Toyota’s Star Safety System, which includes enhanced vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop Technology, along with advanced front- and side-impact airbags. The Four adds Pre-Collision Avoidance with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, automatic high-beams, and dynamic radar cruise control. The Four and Four Touring also add a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert.

Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Prius or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 51.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.61% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 brings the fourth-generation redesign’s improved fuel economy, performance, and design.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $12,599, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $15,153 average.
• It combines utility, comfort, and fuel economy in a way few cars can match.

The bottom line: If you want the newer generation’s updates and are comfortable paying the current market average, the 2016 is the better all-around pick. If your main goal is to spend less up front, the 2015 is the smarter value play, especially if you find a clean example with a strong maintenance history.
