How much does the 2016 Toyota Prius cost?

Prices are up 1.71% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.

There are 713 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and equipment.

Is the 2016 Toyota Prius a good car?

Yes — the 5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 7.67/10. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.

The 2016 Prius stays true to its role as a hybrid benchmark while adding a few fresh touches for its fourth generation. It is aimed at buyers who want a familiar, fuel-saving daily driver with distinctive styling, solid ergonomics, and impressive cargo space.

The market shows 32.7% of listings as good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2016 Toyota Prius reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2016 Prius is built around Toyota’s hybrid formula, with a 1.8-liter gas engine and two electric motor-generators working together for efficient everyday use. The expert evaluation also notes that it drives surprisingly well once underway, with decent pickup and good cornering.

Toyota’s Star Safety System and the hybrid’s regenerative braking setup support the car’s everyday dependability, and the lineup’s emphasis on efficiency and practicality fits long-term ownership well. For used buyers, the main risk is making sure the hybrid system and braking feel are in good shape before you commit.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Prius?

At 54% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has higher mileage or visible bodywork differences. Focus on overall condition, maintenance records, and whether the hybrid system and braking feel behave normally on a test drive.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Two and Two Eco use a 6.1-inch touchscreen, while the Three, Three Touring, Four, and Four Touring upgrade to a 7-inch screen with navigation, app suite access, and more premium tech. The base trims also miss the higher-end safety and convenience features found on the Four.
• Powertrain: The Prius uses a 1.8-liter gas engine with two electric motor-generators for 121 horsepower. The Base model uses a nickel-metal-hydride battery, while every other trim gets a more compact lithium-ion pack.
• Safety package: Every Prius comes with Toyota’s Star Safety System, including enhanced vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop Technology, plus advanced front- and side-impact airbags. The Four adds Pre-Collision Avoidance with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, automatic high-beams, and dynamic radar cruise control, while the Four and Four Touring also add a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert.
• Infotainment: The Two and Two Eco come with a 6.1-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth voice activation, a reversing camera, USB input, aux input, and Siri Eyes Free. The Three, Three Touring, Four, and Four Touring move up to a 7-inch touchscreen with navigation, the Entune app suite, XM satellite radio trial, HD predictive traffic, and Doppler weather overlay.
• Fuel efficiency: Fuel economy is estimated at 54 mpg city/50 highway/52 combined, and the Two Eco is rated at 58/53/56.

Which 2016 Toyota Prius trim should I buy?

The 2016 Toyota Prius is offered in 6 trim levels: Two, Two Eco, Three, Three Touring, Four, Four Touring.

Here's the short version:

• Two: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Prius basics with the 6.1-inch touchscreen, reversing camera, Bluetooth voice activation, and the core hybrid efficiency you’re shopping for.
• Two Eco: This is the best-value pick if your priority is maximum efficiency, since it adds the strongest fuel-economy figures in the lineup while keeping the lower-cost trim structure.
• Three: This is the smart step up if you want the larger 7-inch touchscreen, navigation, and the Entune app suite without jumping all the way to the pricier trims.
• Three Touring: Choose this if you want the same tech upgrade as the Three and prefer the Touring version’s added positioning in the lineup.
• Four: This is the trim to target if you want the most meaningful safety upgrades, including pre-collision braking support, lane departure alert with steering assist, automatic high-beams, and dynamic radar cruise control.
• Four Touring: Pick this if you want the Four’s safety equipment plus the Touring trim’s top-end placement.

The Four and Four Touring also add a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Prius?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 713 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.71% year-over-year.
• Clean inventory: 54.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $14,194, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Toyota Prius's resale value?

The current average of $15,260 sits slightly above last year's $15,003.

That modest increase suggests the market still sees steady value in this model year. If you buy well and keep the car in good condition, the Prius’s efficiency-focused reputation should help it remain appealing to future shoppers.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Toyota Prius safe?

The 2016 Toyota Prius earns Good ratings from IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Every Prius comes with Toyota’s Star Safety System, which includes enhanced vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop Technology. It also includes advanced front- and side-impact airbags as part of the standard safety suite.

The Four trim adds Pre-Collision Avoidance with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, automatic high-beams, and dynamic radar cruise control. The Four and Four Touring also add a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert.

Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Prius or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 54% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.71% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 brings the Prius into its fourth generation with fresh styling, stronger tech, and a more modern hybrid feel.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $12,604, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $15,260 average.
• It blends utility, comfort, and fuel economy into a practical daily driver.

The bottom line: If you want the newer-generation Prius with updated styling, stronger tech, and a still-reasonable market price, the 2016 is the better all-around choice. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the value play and still delivers the core Prius strengths.
