Why it stands out
The 2016 Tesla Model S stands out as one of the cars that helped define the modern electric vehicle. By that point, Tesla had already given the Model S a major refresh, replacing the black grille with a body-colored nose and redesigning the headlights with full-LED adaptive beams. It was still a distinctive luxury sedan, with a minimalist cabin, a huge 17-inch infotainment screen, and the kind of software-driven character that made the Model S feel ahead of its time.
For 2016, the Model S also offered a wide spread of battery packs, including 60-, 70-, 75-, 85-, 90-, and 100-kWh versions, so shoppers needed to pay close attention to listings. Standard equipment included 12-way power-adjustable seats, heated front seats, navigation, a high-definition rear-view camera, leatherette seating surfaces, and two USB ports. Available features included a panoramic glass roof, Nappa leather seats, premium audio, Autopilot, lighted door handles, a power rear liftgate, active air suspension, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, and heated washer nozzles. That mix of advanced tech and upscale equipment is a big part of the car’s appeal.
It is also a compelling used buy because it combines strong performance with long-range electric driving and a cabin that still feels modern. At the same time, the 2016 Model S is not perfect: the source notes poor build quality, and owners have pointed to missing back seat cup holders and low ground clearance. Even so, for buyers who want a distinctive electric sedan with standout technology and a smooth driving experience, the 2016 Tesla Model S remains an especially interesting choice.

This was a great value. I had never driven a Tesla before and this experience was beyond rewarding. So easy to learn and such a comfortable, low maintenance yet sexy and sophisticated ride. Loved the extra space for shopping, and extreme comfort for passengers. Would rent over and over again above any other cars. Price was just as equally efficient compared to lower brands. I highly recommend.

| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $19,980 |
| Year-Round Low | $17,705.31 |
| Year-Round High | $20,081.21 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $18,503 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +7.98% |
Prices are up 7.98% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 384 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of choice without making the market feel flooded.
If you find a listing below $17,705.31, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Tesla Model S a good car?
Generally — the 4.36/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise the amazing technology, performance, and value, and they also like the beautiful interior and smooth driving experience. That lines up well with the 2016 Model S’s appeal as a distinctive luxury electric sedan with a modern-feeling cabin and a strong feature set. With 30.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively if you want the right combination of price and condition.
Is the 2016 Tesla Model S reliable?
Owners rate it 4.36/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback emphasizes a dependable-feeling ownership experience built around strong technology, performance, and value, with many drivers describing the car positively over time. The same feedback also suggests that the Model S can be a car you count on for a smooth, satisfying daily drive if you choose a well-kept example. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the driving experience and more about making sure the specific car you buy has been cared for properly.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Tesla Model S?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should start with a history report so you can confirm accident status and spot any red flags before you get too far into the process. After that, prioritize a thorough inspection of the car’s condition, especially because the model is known for some quality concerns and low ground clearance. Focus on how the car presents overall, and make sure the listing matches the equipment and battery setup you want.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Tesla Model S?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay patient and compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 384 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 7.98% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 78.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,705.31, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Tesla Model S's resale value?
The current average of $19,980 sits slightly above last year's $18,503.
That upward move suggests the market has been willing to pay more for this model year, which can help support resale value if you buy well and keep the car in strong condition. For a future seller, that kind of pricing trend is a useful sign that demand has held up rather than fading. The combination of strong owner satisfaction and steady market interest can make this a more reassuring used-EV ownership proposition.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.36/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Tesla Model S or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices are up 7.98% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.36/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2016 Model S makes the most sense if you want a distinctive electric luxury sedan with strong owner approval and enough market inventory to shop carefully. If you’re price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on the best-conditioned example rather than chasing the newest badge alone.
