Why it stands out
The 2016 Subaru Outback stands out as a vehicle built to support an active lifestyle. It is the kind of car that makes sense when you pack people aboard, load the cargo area with provisions, and head into the mountains, and that versatility is a big part of its appeal. Subaru also frames it as an “Ultimate Thriving Machine,” underscoring its role as a practical companion rather than a performance-first machine.
What makes the 2016 Subaru Outback especially appealing is the way it balances usefulness with everyday comfort. Owners are generally pleased with its spaciousness, comfort, and fuel efficiency, and many also value its safety features and handling, which helps explain why it is popular with families. A notable limitation is that some drivers have been dissatisfied with the quality of the leather seats, saying they can stain and rip after some use.

love my car so far, very smooth driving and the bluetooth is a nice feature as well as the heated seats, my model doesn’t have the sunroof which is a bummer but overall the vehicle is a beaut. very spacious for me and my dogs when we travel in the car for extended periods of time; and ample trunk space for anything we may pick up on the way.

It’s my first time getting a Subaru and an Outback. It’s the limited and it drives very nice, I’m actually very impressed with how well it feels. We have 3 kids ages 11, 9, 5 and they fit in the back just fine. I like how I still feel somewhat off the ground but yet get the car gas mileage. I’d say it compares to my Highlander we had just no 3rd row.

Owners consistently praise the Outback for its spaciousness, comfort, and fuel efficiency. They also highlight its safety features and handling, which makes it appealing if you want a family-friendly vehicle that still feels capable on varied roads.

Is the 2016 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with strong mentions of reliability and the ability to count on the Outback over time. The expert evaluation also emphasizes its impressive track record for reliability and its value as a vehicle you can rely on for a wide range of uses.
The expert review also notes that Subaru’s all-wheel-drive system and ground clearance help the Outback handle demanding conditions with confidence. On the ownership side, Subaru’s value proposition is strengthened by the brand’s residual-value strength, and the model’s maintenance-friendly ownership story is part of the appeal.

At 62.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with visible wear. Focus on signs of prior body damage, interior condition, and how well the vehicle’s safety and convenience features still function.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base setup lacks some of the more desirable convenience and safety upgrades, while the Premium model can add features such as a power sunroof, power rear liftgate, navigation, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and EyeSight.
- Powertrain: Most models use a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder with 175 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, paired with a CVT and standard torque-vectoring all-wheel drive; the 3.6-liter 6-cylinder makes 256 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque and is the stronger choice when you want more passing power.
- Safety package: EyeSight includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist; blind-spot warning with
