How much does the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek cost?

Prices have softened 9.16% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,280 listings available, which suggests a healthy amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek a good car?

Yes — you rate it 5/5, and the expert rating is 6.5/10. The standout strength is Safety at 8/10.

Owners consistently praise the Crosstrek’s safety, reliability, all-wheel drive, and easy handling. That lines up with its practical, safety-focused character and makes it a strong fit if you want a versatile everyday crossover rather than a performance-first vehicle. With 34.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s also a decent amount of market value to work with.

Is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback points to reliability, and the model is also described as dependable and trouble-free in the way it fits everyday use. The expert evaluation adds that the Crosstrek’s straightforward setup supports long-term ownership, even though the powertrain is a weak point. The cost-effectiveness notes also point to better-than-average value retention, which helps the case for keeping one for the long haul.

For used buyers, the main ownership risk is that the powertrain can be noisy and underwhelming, so condition and maintenance history matter more than usual.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Subaru Crosstrek?

At 58.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and any signs of prior repair. It’s also smart to focus on how the Crosstrek drives, since the powertrain is a known weak point and can affect everyday satisfaction. If possible, confirm that the safety and tech features work as expected, especially on higher-trim examples.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 2.0i comes with 17-inch alloys, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a rear-view camera, fog lights, a 6.2-inch touchscreen with smartphone integration, and a USB port/Aux input. The 2.0i Premium adds heated body-color mirrors, heated front seats, an upgraded stereo, contrast stitching, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, an adjustable center armrest, and a cargo cover and tray. The 2.0i Limited adds a 7-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, auto climate control, auto headlights, leather, and an acoustic windshield, making it the best-value choice if you want the most comfort and tech.
• Powertrain: The 2.0-liter boxer engine is paired with a 5-speed manual on the 2.0i and 2.0i Premium, while the Limited uses a CVT. The CVT improves efficiency, but the powertrain is still described as loud and weak at highway speeds.
• Safety package: The Eyesight safety system adds rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-departure warning. Those features are a major value boost, but the system can shut off when the camera view is blocked by sun, fog, mist, dirt, snow, or mud.
• Infotainment: The base 6.2-inch touchscreen includes smartphone integration, while the Limited upgrades to a 7-inch system with satellite radio. Starlink also adds automatic collision notification with SOS, stolen-vehicle recovery, and a monitoring app.
• Fuel efficiency: The manual transmission is rated at 23 mpg city/31 highway, and the CVT adds 3 mpg on either end of the spectrum.

Which 2016 Subaru Crosstrek trim should I buy?

The 2016 Subaru Crosstrek is offered in 3 trim levels: 2.0i, 2.0i Premium, 2.0i Limited.

Here's the short version:

• 2.0i: This is the value pick if you want the Crosstrek’s core strengths at the lowest entry point. You still get the rear-view camera, touchscreen, smartphone integration, fog lights, and the practical all-wheel-drive setup, so it covers the basics well.
• 2.0i Premium: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds heated front seats, heated mirrors, a better stereo, and nicer interior touches without jumping too far in price. If you want a more comfortable daily driver, this is the sweet spot.
• 2.0i Limited: This is the trim to choose if you want the most complete feature set. It adds the 7-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, auto climate control, auto headlights, leather, and the acoustic windshield, plus the available safety tech that helps make the Crosstrek feel more modern.

The safety package is strongest on the Limited, where the Eyesight system and related features add the most value.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Subaru Crosstrek?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully.

• Deal availability: 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,280 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.16% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 58.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $12,521, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek's resale value?

The current average of $12,522 sits slightly below last year's $13,785.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point. For a future seller, the softer pricing means you should be realistic about appreciation, but the model’s broad appeal still supports steady demand. Strong owner satisfaction and the Crosstrek’s practical reputation should help it remain attractive to used buyers over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek safe?

The 2016 Subaru Crosstrek earns top marks from both IIHS and NHTSA, though the NHTSA total frontal impact test rates four stars.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Crosstrek comes with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure warning through the Eyesight system, along with 4-wheel antilock brakes, traction and stability control, a rear-view camera, and a full airbag suite that includes front side, curtain-side, and driver knee airbags. One caveat is that the Eyesight system can be disabled when the camera view is blocked by weather or debris, so it’s worth understanding that limitation before you buy.

Should I buy a 2016 Subaru Crosstrek or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 58.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.16% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 update adds Starlink plus blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure alert, while also refreshing the front end and interior.

The bottom line: If you want the Crosstrek’s practical, safety-first formula with updated tech and a softer used-car price, the 2016 is a sensible target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can also compare nearby years, but the 2016 stands out for its added safety equipment and current-feeling updates.
