How much does the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek cost?

Prices have softened 7.89% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,274 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.

Is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek earns a 5/5 user rating and a 6.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 8/10.

Owners consistently praise the Crosstrek’s safety features, reliability, all-wheel drive, versatility, and easy handling. That lines up with the model’s practical use case as a compact crossover that prioritizes everyday usefulness, all-weather confidence, and a fresher presentation over speed. With 31.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you also have a decent chance of finding a value-oriented example.

Is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to the Crosstrek as reliable, dependable, and trouble-free, with many owners saying they can count on it for everyday use. The expert drive notes also emphasize its practical, easy-to-live-with character, even though the powertrain is the main weakness. On the ownership side, the cost-effectiveness notes say reliability reports have placed it average at best, so you should pay close attention to maintenance history and overall condition when shopping used.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Subaru Crosstrek?

At 58.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s safety and driver-assistance equipment still functions properly. Because this model’s appeal is tied to practicality and safety, condition matters more than cosmetic extras.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 2.0i comes with 17-inch alloys, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a rear-view camera, fog lights, a 6.2-inch touchscreen with smartphone integration, and a USB port/Aux input. The 2.0i Premium adds heated body-color mirrors, heated front seats, an upgraded stereo, contrast stitching, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, an adjustable center armrest, and a cargo cover and tray. The 2.0i Limited adds a 7-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, auto climate control, auto headlights, leather, and an acoustic windshield.
• Powertrain: The 2.0-liter boxer engine makes 148 hp and is paired with a 5-speed manual on the 2.0i and 2.0i Premium, while the Limited uses a CVT. The manual setup uses Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel-drive system with 50/50 power distribution, while CVT-equipped trims use a front-wheel-drive-biased system that can send power rearward when needed. Efficiency improves with the CVT, but the powertrain is still the model’s biggest weakness.
• Safety package: The Crosstrek includes the Eyesight safety system on higher trims, with rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-departure warning. Standard safety equipment includes 4-wheel antilock brakes, traction and stability control, a full airbag suite, a rear-view camera, and active front head restraints. The Eyesight system can be unavailable when the camera view is blocked by sun, fog, dirt, snow, or mud.
• Infotainment: The base trim uses a 6.2-inch touchscreen with smartphone integration, while the Limited upgrades to a 7-inch system with satellite radio. Starlink adds automatic collision notification with SOS, stolen-vehicle recovery, and a monitoring app. The navigation system is included on equipped trims, but the text notes it is not the strongest system.
• Fuel efficiency: The manual transmission is rated at 23 mpg city/31 highway, and the CVT adds 3 mpg on either end of the spectrum.

Which 2016 Subaru Crosstrek trim should I buy?

The 2016 Subaru Crosstrek is offered in 3 trim levels: 2.0i, 2.0i Premium, 2.0i Limited.

Here's the short version:

• 2.0i: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and still want useful standard equipment like the rear-view camera, touchscreen, fog lights, and smartphone integration. It makes the most sense if you care more about affordability and basic utility than comfort upgrades.
• 2.0i Premium: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds heated front seats, heated mirrors, an upgraded stereo, and nicer interior touches without jumping all the way to the Limited. If you want the best balance of price and everyday comfort, this is the one to target.
• 2.0i Limited: This trim is the right pick if you want the most features, including the 7-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, auto climate control, auto headlights, leather, and the acoustic windshield. It suits you best if you want the most polished version and are willing to pay more for it.

The safety package is strongest on the higher trims, where Eyesight adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure warning.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Subaru Crosstrek?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and deal activity to make comparison shopping worthwhile.

• Deal availability: 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,274 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.89% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 58.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $12,498, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek's resale value?

The current average of $12,503 sits slightly below last year's $13,574.

That price movement suggests the Crosstrek has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stabilizes. The model’s practical reputation and strong owner satisfaction should support demand, especially for clean, well-maintained examples. If you keep mileage reasonable and preserve service records, you should be in a better position when it’s time to sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek safe?

The 2016 Subaru Crosstrek earns top marks from both IIHS and NHTSA, with only the NHTSA’s total frontal impact test receiving anything other than a perfect score, rating four out of five stars.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Crosstrek comes with the Eyesight safety system on equipped trims, adding rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-departure warning. Standard safety equipment includes 4-wheel antilock brakes, traction and stability control, a full airbag suite, a rear-view camera, and active front head restraints. One caveat is that the Eyesight system can shut off when the camera view is blocked by sun, fog, dirt, snow, or mud.

Should I buy a 2016 Subaru Crosstrek or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 58.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.89% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 model adds Starlink and expanded safety features such as blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure alert.

The bottom line: The 2016 is a smart choice if you want the updated safety and tech package, especially at today’s softer prices. If you’re shopping on a tighter budget, a nearby year may still make sense, but you’ll want to compare equipment carefully and prioritize condition over small price differences.

How does the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek compare to the 2016 Honda HR-V?

Our experts score the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek 6.5/10 and the 2016 Honda HR-V 7.5/10. The Crosstrek leans harder into safety, all-wheel-drive confidence, and rugged practicality, while the HR-V edges ahead on overall expert score and fuel economy. If you want the stronger value on used listings and a more safety-focused setup, the Crosstrek is compelling; if you want the higher-rated choice with better MPG, the HR-V has the advantage.
