Starter car for my 16 year old. It is perfect for her. Great back up camera! It is cute enough to make her happy, but practical and sturdy enough to make me happy. Estimated life span for the car is 250k-300k per the internet, so hopefully this will last her through college.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Nissan Sentra?
At 48.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or shows uneven panel gaps, paint mismatch, or tire wear. Focus on overall condition, because the Sentra’s value proposition depends heavily on getting a clean, well-maintained example.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S includes halogen headlights, dual power outside mirrors, Bluetooth hands-free phone service, cruise control, cloth seating, and manually adjustable front seats, but it does not have extras that appear higher in the range. The SV adds a higher-quality cloth interior, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, piano black accents, a rear-view camera, NissanConnect with mobile apps, hands-free text messaging, and Siri Eyes Free, while the SR adds 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, LED low-beam projector headlights, heated premium sport cloth seats, fog lights, LED taillights, and a sport rear fascia. The SL turns most SR options into standard equipment and adds dual-zone automatic temperature control, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and piano black interior accents.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine with 130 hp and 128 lb-ft of torque. The base model gets a 6-speed manual, while the rest of the lineup uses an Xtronic CVT. Front-wheel drive is standard across the board, and the car is tuned more for commuting than for strong acceleration.
- Safety package: The Sentra includes airbags, vehicle dynamic control, front seatbelt pretensioners, and child safety locks on every trim. It also earns Top Safety Pick+ recognition, with Good scores across crash categories and optional forward emergency braking contributing to its safety performance. Forward emergency braking and blind-spot warning are available only as options and only on the top two trim levels.
- Infotainment: The base system uses an AM/FM radio and CD player with 4 speakers, a USB port, an Aux jack, MP3/WMA CD playback, and Bluetooth hands-free calling. The SV adds a 5-inch color monitor, 6 speakers, hands-free text messaging, SiriusXM satellite radio, and an optional package with a 5.8-inch color touchscreen, navigation, and voice recognition. The top trim gets NissanConnect with the larger touchscreen, navigation, voice recognition, SiriusXM Traffic, and Travel Link.
- Fuel efficiency: The Sentra is rated at 29 mpg city/38 highway/34 combined, and the FE+S is rated at 30 mpg city/40 highway.
Which 2016 Nissan Sentra trim should I buy?
The 2016 Nissan Sentra is offered in 5 trim levels: S, FE+S, SV, SR, SL.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the essentials at the lowest price, including Bluetooth, cruise control, cloth seating, and the standard manual transmission. It makes sense if you want the cheapest way into the Sentra, but it is the most stripped-down version.
- FE+S: This trim is the efficiency-focused choice, with low-rolling-resistance tires, aero deflectors, a rear spoiler, and the best fuel-economy ratings in the lineup. It is the best-value pick if your priority is commuting and running costs.
- SV: This is the smart middle ground because it adds a rear-view camera, NissanConnect with mobile apps, hands-free text messaging, SiriusXM, and a nicer cabin. If you want the best balance of price and features, this is the trim to target.
- SR: This trim adds the sportiest appearance and more upscale equipment, including 17-inch wheels, LED projector headlights, heated sport cloth seats, fog lights, and available upgrades like leather seating and a Bose audio system. Choose it if you want the most style and the richest option list.
- SL: This is the most fully equipped version, with most SR options made standard plus dual-zone automatic climate control and an auto-dimming mirror. It suits you if you want the most comfort and convenience features in the lineup.
Forward emergency braking and blind-spot warning are available only as options on the top two trim levels.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Nissan Sentra?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay patient and compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 28.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 910 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.89% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 48.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $7,868, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Nissan Sentra's resale value?
The current average of $8,017 sits slightly below last year's $8,518.
That decline suggests the market has become a bit softer, which can work against sellers who are trying to maximize return. If you plan to sell later, pricing competitively and keeping the car in strong condition will matter more than hoping for a quick rebound.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Nissan Sentra safe?
The 2016 Nissan Sentra is a Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS and earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with five-star side crash ratings and four-star frontal and rollover ratings.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The Sentra comes standard with airbags, vehicle dynamic control, front seatbelt pretensioners, and child safety locks. Optional forward emergency braking adds to its safety package, and blind-spot warning is also available, though both are limited to the top two trim levels.
Should I buy a 2016 Nissan Sentra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 28.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 48.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.89% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It stands out as a refreshed model with updated styling and new infotainment features that make it feel more polished than a simple carryover.
The bottom line: The 2016 Sentra makes the most sense if you want the refreshed styling and added tech at a still-reasonable price. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can also use the softer market to target the cleanest, best-maintained example rather than stretching for a higher trim.
