Why it stands out
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands out as a full-size luxury sedan that puts technology, craftsmanship, and comfort at the center of the experience. In this generation, Mercedes gave the car a new aluminum hybrid body shell that cut weight and improved rigidity, and the cabin was designed to feel especially refined, with wood and metal accents flowing together more smoothly than before. It also brought selectable ambient lighting, which helped define the interior atmosphere, and the car’s feature set was broad enough that many versions were richly equipped even if some of the best items were optional.
What makes the 2016 model especially appealing is how much advanced equipment it packed into a traditional luxury sedan shape. The W222 generation featured two giant 12.3-inch screens under a single panel, while many physical controls were retained. It also offered magic body control, which used road scanning to adapt the suspension, along with a surround-view camera system that integrated radar and ultrasonic sensors for smoother adaptive cruise control and lane centering. Buyers also got the sense that this was a car built to showcase Mercedes technology, from night vision to available rear executive seating, massaging seats, and premium audio.
There are tradeoffs, though. The S-Class is expensive to own, and the source notes that upkeep can be steep even though this generation has a very good reliability record overall. It also points out that suspension and electrical issues are common concerns, which is worth keeping in mind for a used example. Even so, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class remains distinctive because it combines flagship-level luxury with a long list of advanced features and a reputation for being one of the most sophisticated sedans of its era.

I think this car is trash. They have not been taking good care of it. Missing all the passengers windows buttons. The driver seat seat is broken and the car is filthy inside.

How much does the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $28,889 |
| Year-Round Low | $28,844 |
| Year-Round High | $32,694 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $32,700 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.65% |
Prices have softened 11.65% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 964 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.
Is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a strong fit if you want a flagship luxury sedan that emphasizes comfort, technology, and refinement, though it comes with the usual luxury-car ownership tradeoffs. Its user rating is 3.92/5, and drivers commonly praise its luxurious feel, advanced amenities, great handling, value for money, and superior performance compared with competitors.
That lines up well with the car’s role as a full-size luxury sedan built around a refined cabin, advanced equipment, and a long list of available comfort features. If you want a car that feels especially polished and richly appointed, this model fits that use case well.
With 33.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a meaningful chance to find a competitively priced example.
Is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class has a very good reliability record overall, even though upkeep can be steep and suspension and electrical issues are common concerns. Drivers also describe it as luxurious, well equipped, and strong on performance, which supports the idea that it can be a dependable long-term flagship when maintained properly.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that repair and maintenance costs can rise quickly if prior care was inconsistent or if electronic and suspension problems have already started to surface.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
At 59.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a full vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on suspension behavior, electrical operation, and any signs that luxury features are not working as intended. Pay close attention to overall condition, because this is the kind of car where deferred maintenance can become expensive quickly.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile opportunities.
- Deal availability: 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 964 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.65% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,844, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?
The current average of $28,889 sits slightly below last year's $32,700.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can work against you if you buy at the wrong time and then try to resell soon after. On the other hand, if you buy well below the current average and keep the car in strong condition, you may reduce the impact of further depreciation. For a future seller, the key is to avoid overpaying now and to preserve service history and condition as much as possible.
Should I buy a 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.65% compared with last year.
The bottom line: The 2016 is a smart primary target if you want the S-Class experience at a softer price point than newer examples, especially if you can verify a clean history and strong maintenance records. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare it with nearby years to see whether a better-equipped or better-priced example gives you more value for your budget.
