CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Summary
With 170 currently listed for sale near Phoenix, AZ and an average price of $31,754.00, 27.1% of 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class 3.92 / 5 stars.
58.8% of 2016 S-Class models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands out because it sits in a lineage that has long been Mercedes-Benz’s showcase for technology, craftsmanship, and safety. In this generation, the car brought a new aluminum hybrid body shell that cut weight and improved rigidity, and Mercedes said it was the first in the world to exclusively feature LEDs over traditional bulbs, with 500 light units throughout the interior and exterior. It also introduced “magic body control,” using road scanning to detect potholes and imperfections in advance and adapt the suspension to them, along with a surround-view camera system that integrated multi-modal radar and ultrasonic sensors for smoother adaptive cruise control and lane centering.
Inside, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class leaned hard into luxury and high-end tech. Its cabin used wood and metal accents that flowed more smoothly than before, and selectable ambient lighting became one of its defining touches. The car also featured two giant 12.3-inch screens under a single panel, while still retaining many physical controls, and night vision remained available. Buyers could also find rear executive seating packages, sport packages, AMG appearance packages, air purifiers, active parking assist, massaging seats, and Burmester surround-sound audio, which helped make even well-equipped versions feel especially rich.
It is also appealing because it offers serious performance and a wide range of powertrains. In 2016, the lineup included the S 550 with a 4.7-liter twin-turbo V8 making 449 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, the S 600 with a 5.5-liter V12 making 523 horsepower and 612 pound-feet of torque, and the AMG S 65 with a 6.0-liter V12 making 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. The generation also offered 4Matic all-wheel drive on the S 550, and the S 550e plug-in hybrid delivered 329 system horsepower and 14 miles of electric range. The tradeoff is that this is still an expensive machine to own, and maintenance can be costly, with electrical issues and suspension concerns among the common worries.

How much does the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $30,054 |
| Year-Round Low | $28,906.51 |
| Year-Round High | $32,957.06 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $32,638 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.92% |
Prices have softened 7.92% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,003 listings available, which suggests a healthy amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $28,906.51, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?
With a 3.92/5 user rating, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class lands as a strong but not flawless luxury choice.
Drivers commonly praise its luxurious feel, advanced amenities, and great handling, and many also point to its value for money and superior performance compared with competitors. That lines up well if you want a flagship sedan that emphasizes comfort, technology, and a high-end driving experience. If you are shopping for a full-size luxury car that can serve as a showcase vehicle, this model fits that use case especially well.
With 26.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively rather than rushing into the first example you see.
Is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class combines advanced technology, craftsmanship, and safety with a lineup that was designed to deliver a polished ownership experience.
At the same time, owner feedback points to maintenance costs and electronic components as recurring concerns, so reliability here is tied closely to how well a specific car has been maintained. For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is real if service history is thin or if suspension and electrical issues have already started to surface.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
At 59.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a full vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was cosmetic or structural. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on electronics, suspension behavior, and any warning lights or intermittent features, since those are the kinds of issues that can become expensive on a car like this. Pay close attention to how the cabin systems, ride quality, and advanced driver-assistance features operate in real-world use.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
This is a moderate market, so you can be selective if you are willing to compare condition and history carefully.
- Deal availability: 26.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,003 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.92% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,906.51, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?
The current average of $30,054 sits slightly below last year's $32,638.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently today. For a future seller, it also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and documented maintenance rather than just the badge alone. If you keep the car well maintained and avoid accident history, you will be in a better position to protect value later.
Should I buy a 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 26.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.92% compared with last year.
The bottom line: The 2016 is a strong pick if you want the S-Class experience at a lower entry price and are willing to shop carefully for condition and history. If you are especially price-sensitive, a nearby year with a better-maintained example or a stronger deal may be worth considering, but the 2016 remains the better primary path if you want the best balance of luxury, tech, and current market value.
