Why it stands out
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands out as a full-size luxury sedan that puts technology, craftsmanship, and comfort at the center of the experience. In this generation, Mercedes gave the car a new aluminum hybrid body shell that cut weight and improved rigidity, and the cabin was designed to feel especially refined, with wood and metal accents flowing together more smoothly than before. It also brought selectable ambient lighting, which helped define the interior atmosphere, and the car’s feature set was broad enough that many versions were richly equipped even if some of the best items were optional.
What makes the 2016 model especially appealing is how much advanced equipment it packed into a traditional luxury sedan shape. The W222 generation featured two giant 12.3-inch screens under a single panel, while many physical controls were retained. It also offered magic body control, which used road scanning to adapt the suspension, along with a surround-view camera system that integrated radar and ultrasonic sensors for smoother adaptive cruise control and lane centering. Buyers also got the sense that this was a car built to showcase Mercedes technology, from night vision to available rear executive seating, massaging seats, and premium audio.
There are tradeoffs, though. The S-Class is expensive to own, and the source notes that upkeep can be steep even though this generation has a very good reliability record overall. It also points out that suspension and electrical issues are common concerns, which is worth keeping in mind for a used example. Even so, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class remains distinctive because it combines flagship-level luxury with a long list of advanced features and a reputation for being one of the most sophisticated sedans of its era.

|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $28,812 |
| Year-Round Low | $28,812 |
| Year-Round High | $32,523 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $32,531 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.43% |
Prices have softened 11.43% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 957 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare before you decide.
Is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a strong fit if you want a flagship luxury sedan that emphasizes comfort, technology, and refinement, and its user rating of 3.92/5 suggests owners see real appeal in it. Drivers commonly praise its luxurious feel, advanced amenities, great handling, value for money, and superior performance compared with competitors. The overview also points to a car that works especially well if you want a richly equipped full-size sedan with standout cabin presentation and a long list of available features. With 32.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is described as having a very good reliability record overall, even though it is still an expensive car to own. The user review summary reinforces that impression by noting that drivers appreciate the car’s luxurious feel and performance while also flagging maintenance costs and electronic components as potential pain points over time. That combination suggests you can count on the car for a premium experience, but long-term ownership risk is still tied to upkeep, especially if prior maintenance has been inconsistent.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
At 58.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any reported damage was cosmetic or structural. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on suspension behavior, electrical operation, and any warning lights or intermittent tech issues, since those are the kinds of concerns that can become expensive on a used flagship sedan. Pay close attention to overall condition and maintenance records, because a well-kept example matters more here than simply finding the lowest price.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can afford to be choosy without waiting forever.
- Deal availability: 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 957 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.43% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 58.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,812, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?
The current average of $28,812 sits slightly below last year's $32,531.
That decline suggests the market has moved in buyers’ favor, which can help you get into the car at a more attractive entry price. For a future seller, though, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and service history. Well-kept examples should hold up better than neglected ones, especially in a luxury segment where buyers are sensitive to maintenance records.
Should I buy a 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.43% compared with last year.
The bottom line: The 2016 is a smart choice if you want a well-equipped flagship sedan and you can verify condition carefully before buying. If you are more price-sensitive, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2016 stands out as a balanced option when you want luxury, technology, and a market that is currently more favorable than it was a year ago.
