What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Mazda MAZDA6?

At 48.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a car with a lower price or a higher-mileage profile. Focus on bodywork quality, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s features and driver-assistance systems work as expected. Because the model’s appeal depends heavily on its balance of style, comfort, and technology, condition matters a lot.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Touring and Grand Touring trims add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, while the Grand Touring test car also had the optional Technology Package. That package adds lane-departure warning, radar cruise control with forward-collision warning, and Smart Brake Support automatic emergency braking.
• Powertrain: The Mazda6 uses a 184-hp, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, and it is the only engine offered. A 6-speed manual is available in the Sport and Touring versions, while the Grand Touring uses a 6-speed automatic.
• Safety package: The Technology Package includes lane-departure warning, radar cruise control with forward-collision warning, and Smart Brake Support automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert comes standard on the Touring and Grand Touring trims.
• Infotainment: Mazda Connect uses a center-console Commander knob, a top-mounted display screen that is touch-sensitive at a standstill, and voice commands. It also includes E911, text-messaging support, Aha and Pandora apps, and available navigation with 2D and 3D map rendering.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA says the car should return 28 mpg city, 40 mpg highway, and 32 mpg combined. The expert review also notes a weeklong average of 29.3 mpg.

Which 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 trim should I buy?

The 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the entry point if you want the Mazda6’s styling and driving character at the lowest price. It gives you the core sedan experience, and it’s also one of the trims that can be paired with the 6-speed manual if you want a more involved drive.
• Touring: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert while staying below the top trim. It also keeps the option of the manual transmission, which makes it a strong pick if you want more equipment without jumping all the way to the Grand Touring.
• Grand Touring: This is the most upscale version and the one that best matches the car’s near-luxury personality. It comes with the 6-speed automatic and is the trim used for the expert test vehicle, making it the right choice if you want the most polished Mazda6 experience.

The safety package note to keep in mind is that the Technology Package adds lane-departure warning, radar cruise control with forward-collision warning, and Smart Brake Support automatic emergency braking.

What is the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6's resale value?

The current average of $12,538 sits slightly above last year's $11,773.

That upward move suggests the market has been willing to pay more for this model year, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. The year-round range also shows that values have stayed fairly tight, which can help support predictable pricing when you decide to trade in or list the car. Strong demand for a well-reviewed, stylish midsize sedan can help keep resale interest steady.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

The 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 earns a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and a five-star overall crash-test rating from NHTSA.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

The available Technology Package adds lane-departure warning, radar cruise control with forward-collision warning, and Smart Brake Support automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert comes standard on the Touring and Grand Touring trims, so lower trims miss some of the more advanced driver-assistance coverage. The expert review also notes that the radar cruise control works well for slowing the car, though engagement could be smoother.

Should I buy a 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 48.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 6.49% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 adds a more advanced infotainment and safety setup, including Mazda Connect and available Technology Package features.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $11,481, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $12,538 average.
• It combines sharp styling, an upscale look, and engaging driving dynamics in a practical package.

The bottom line: If you want the most complete mix of style, technology, and safety, the 2016 is the better target. If your priority is saving money and you still want the Mazda6’s core strengths, the 2015 is the value-oriented alternative worth cross-shopping.
