Summary
With 500 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,473.00, 29.8% of 2016 Mazda MAZDA6s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 4.7 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.67 / 10.
47.4% of 2016 MAZDA6 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 stands out first for its style. It is described as sleek, svelte, and sexy, a rare set of adjectives for a mainstream sedan, and that design-forward character is a big part of its appeal. It also aims to deliver a more upscale feel than its price suggests, with the summary noting that it is priced like a mainstream model but styled and equipped like a luxury car.
Beyond appearance, the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 is presented as a well-rounded midsize sedan with fuel efficiency, safety, and technology among its strengths. The summary calls it a remarkable automobile, and owner feedback reinforces that impression by praising its smooth ride, enjoyable handling, features, and fuel efficiency. The main tradeoffs are also clear: its interior accommodations are smaller than some competitors, deals are not particularly favorable, engine power could be better, and some comforts such as power seats are missing.

I needed a reliable car. Had a Mazda 3 that was very dependable, unfortunately had an accident and it was totaled, so had to get a replacement and why not get another Mazda. Thought this car was priced fair, had a good car fax / maintenance and it was a little bigger than the Mazda 3 we had previously. We also looked at Camry, CX-5. Also looked at another Mazda 3 but it was too small for our family. The Mazda 6 2016 we purchased is fun to drive. I would have liked to got something a little newer or something that had a little more room but really wasn’t too much of an option for us as it exceeded our budget. The mileage was low for this vehicle so hoping to keep this vehicle around for a long time and maybe we can pass it down to one of our kids someday.

Great car with great features. The only thing missing in my eyes are power seaats, hate the old school method. Lol. As far as value goes for this car yes could have been a bit better.

Mazdas ride so smooth and look so good. Love all of the amenities it comes with too; leather heated seats, sports mode, sky active feature. Very comfortable ride.

With 29.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a car that feels dependable, with praise for its smooth ride, enjoyable handling, and fuel efficiency. The expert review also describes it as expected to be dependable over time and inexpensive to own. Mazda’s cost-effectiveness notes add that it is predicted to be inexpensive to own, though warranty coverage is merely average.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that a well-kept example matters more than a casual glance suggests, so condition and maintenance history should carry real weight.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Mazda MAZDA6?
At 47.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a prior collision. Focus on bodywork quality, panel alignment, and signs that safety systems or electronics were repaired correctly. Because the model’s appeal depends heavily on how well it drives and feels, pay close attention to ride quality, steering response, and interior condition.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Touring and Grand Touring trims add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, while the Technology Package adds lane-departure warning, radar cruise control with forward-collision warning, and Smart Brake Support. Base-trim shoppers should note the feature gap.
- Powertrain: A 184-hp, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine is the only engine offered. A 6-speed manual is available in the Sport and Touring versions, while the Grand Touring uses a 6-speed automatic. Fuel economy is strong, but the engine can feel short on power for some drivers.
- Safety package: The Technology Package adds lane-departure warning, radar cruise control with forward-collision warning, and Smart Brake Support automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on Touring and Grand Touring trims.
- Infotainment: Mazda Connect uses a center-console Commander knob, a top-of-dash display, voice commands, and touch input when stopped. It includes text-messaging support, Aha and Pandora, navigation with 2D and 3D maps, and available Bose audio. The system is available with a heads-up display.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA estimates 28 mpg city, 40 mpg highway, and 32 mpg combined. The expert review reports a 29.3 mpg week-long average.

Here's the short version:

What is the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6's resale value?
The current average of $12,401 sits slightly above last year's $12,173.
That modest increase suggests the model has held value reasonably well, which can help if you plan to sell later. Rising prices also indicate that buyers still see appeal in this year’s mix of style, efficiency, and features. If you buy well and keep the car in good condition, you should have a decent shot at preserving value relative to many mainstream sedans.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 safe?
It earns a five-star overall crash-test rating from NHTSA, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety calls it a Top Safety Pick.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
The Technology Package adds lane-departure warning, radar cruise control with forward-collision warning, and Smart Brake Support automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert comes standard on Touring and Grand Touring trims. That means higher trims give you more of the active-safety coverage many used buyers want, while base-trim shoppers may need to look harder for the right equipment mix.
Should I buy a 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 29.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 47.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.87% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 adds a revamped Mazda Connect system and available advanced safety tech.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $11,540, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $12,401 average.
- It blends style, driving enjoyment, and value in a practical package.
The bottom line: if you want the newer car with stronger tech and safety content, the 2016 is the better target. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the smarter value play and still delivers much of the Mazda6 appeal.
