CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Mazda MAZDA6
overall

Summary
With 509 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,385.00, 30.8% of 2016 Mazda MAZDA6s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 4.7 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.67 / 10.
47.9% of 2016 MAZDA6 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 stands out first for its style. It is described as sleek, svelte, and sexy, a rare set of adjectives for a mainstream sedan, and that design-forward character is a big part of its appeal. It also aims to deliver a more upscale feel than its price suggests, with the summary noting that it is priced like a mainstream model but styled and equipped like a luxury car.
Beyond appearance, the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 is presented as a well-rounded midsize sedan with fuel efficiency, safety, and technology among its strengths. The summary calls it a remarkable automobile, and owner feedback reinforces that impression by praising its smooth ride, enjoyable handling, features, and fuel efficiency. The main tradeoffs are also clear: its interior accommodations are smaller than some competitors, deals are not particularly favorable, engine power could be better, and some comforts such as power seats are missing.

I needed a reliable car. Had a Mazda 3 that was very dependable, unfortunately had an accident and it was totaled, so had to get a replacement and why not get another Mazda. Thought this car was priced fair, had a good car fax / maintenance and it was a little bigger than the Mazda 3 we had previously. We also looked at Camry, CX-5. Also looked at another Mazda 3 but it was too small for our family. The Mazda 6 2016 we purchased is fun to drive. I would have liked to got something a little newer or something that had a little more room but really wasn’t too much of an option for us as it exceeded our budget. The mileage was low for this vehicle so hoping to keep this vehicle around for a long time and maybe we can pass it down to one of our kids someday.

Great car with great features. The only thing missing in my eyes are power seaats, hate the old school method. Lol. As far as value goes for this car yes could have been a bit better.

Mazdas ride so smooth and look so good. Love all of the amenities it comes with too; leather heated seats, sports mode, sky active feature. Very comfortable ride.

Is the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 reliable?

The cost-effectiveness notes also describe it as expected to be dependable over time and inexpensive to own, which supports the case for long-term ownership. What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Mazda MAZDA6?
At 47.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had body damage or repair work. Focus on condition details that matter in daily use: interior wear, feature operation, and whether the car still feels tight and composed on the road. Because deals are not especially favorable, you want the cleanest example you can find rather than settling for a questionable bargain.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Grand Touring stands out for its upscale feel and available Technology Package, while the Touring and Grand Touring trims add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Base-trim shoppers should pay close attention to feature gaps, especially if you want the safety and convenience equipment that appears higher up the range.
- Powertrain: The car uses a 184-hp, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine as standard equipment, paired with a 6-speed automatic in Grand Touring. A 6-speed manual is available in Sport and Touring trims, and the car is tuned for responsive handling with fuel-conscious shifting behavior.
- Safety package: The Technology Package adds lane-departure warning, radar cruise control with forward-collision warning, and Smart Brake Support automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert comes standard on Touring and Grand Touring trims.
- Infotainment: Mazda Connect uses a center-console Commander knob, a touch-sensitive display when stopped, voice commands, and available navigation with 2D and 3D map rendering. The system also supports text messaging, Aha, Pandora, E911, and available Bose Centerpoint Surround Sound.
- Fuel efficiency: The car is rated at 28 mpg city, 40 mpg highway, and 32 mpg combined, and one test returned 29.3 mpg during mixed driving.
Which 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 trim should I buy?
The 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point if you want the Mazda6’s core strengths at the lowest price. It gives you the standard engine and, importantly, the manual transmission option that adds extra driver involvement.
- Touring: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more everyday comfort and includes blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. If you want a more complete used-car experience without stretching to the top trim, this is the one to focus on.
- Grand Touring: This is the most upscale choice, with the standard automatic transmission, available Technology Package, and the richest feature set in the lineup. It suits you best if you want the Mazda6 to feel closest to a near-luxury sedan.
The safety package note to remember is that blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert comes standard on the Touring and Grand Touring trims, while the Technology Package adds lane-departure warning, radar cruise control, and Smart Brake Support.

What is the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6's resale value?
The current average of $12,431 sits slightly above last year's $12,060.
That upward move suggests the market has been willing to pay a bit more for this model year, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. It also means you may not see deep discounts unless a listing has higher mileage, prior damage, or weaker equipment. Because the car has broad appeal for style, efficiency, and driving enjoyment, demand should remain reasonably steady if the example you buy is clean and well kept.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 safe?
It earns a 5-star overall crash-test rating from NHTSA, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety calls it a Top Safety Pick.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
The available Technology Package adds lane-departure warning, radar cruise control with forward-collision warning, and Smart Brake Support automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert comes standard on Touring and Grand Touring trims, and E911 calling is included through Mazda Connect. The main caveat is that some of the most advanced driver-assistance features are not standard across the lineup, so you need to check trim and package content carefully.
Should I buy a 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 25.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 47.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.08% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 adds a more advanced infotainment and safety setup, including Mazda Connect and available driver-assistance tech.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $11,678, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $12,431 average.
- It blends sleek design with an upscale appearance and enjoyable driving dynamics.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of style, tech, and safety, the 2016 is the better all-around pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the smarter value play, especially if you find a clean example with the equipment you want.
