What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Mazda CX-9?

At 63.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, alignment, and signs of prior repair. Because the CX-9 is a three-row SUV, it also makes sense to focus on cabin condition, seat wear, and how well the interior features work in daily use. If you’re comparing multiple listings, the cleanest example with the best maintenance record is usually the safer buy.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Sport trim comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, 3-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth hands-free calling with streaming audio capability, and Mazda Connect infotainment, while the Touring adds heated side mirrors, a power rear liftgate, leather seating with heated front seats, push-button start, a larger 8-inch touch screen, and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. The Grand Touring adds 20-inch wheels, adaptive high beams, rain-sensing wipers, navigation, a 12-speaker Bose premium stereo, a head-up display, and more advanced safety gear, while the Signature adds Nappa leather and exclusive interior trim.
• Powertrain: The CX-9 uses a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-4 with 227 hp on 87-octane fuel and 250 hp on 93-octane, plus 310 pound-feet of torque. It pairs with a 6-speed automatic and is offered with front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes front and side impact airbags, LATCH child seat anchoring, a backup camera, an engine immobilizer, and tire pressure monitoring. • Infotainment: Mazda Connect is standard, with a 7-inch touch screen on the base model and an 8-inch touch screen on other trims. Bluetooth hands-free calling and streaming audio are standard, and the system can be paired with a 12-speaker Bose premium stereo.
• Fuel efficiency: The front-wheel-drive model returns 22 mpg city and 28 mpg highway, while the all-wheel-drive model returns 21 mpg city and 26 mpg highway.

Which 2016 Mazda CX-9 trim should I buy?

The 2016 Mazda CX-9 is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, and Signature.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the value play if you want the CX-9’s core strengths at the lowest entry point. You still get the upscale design, three-zone climate control, Bluetooth streaming, dual USB ports, and Mazda Connect, but you give up some of the convenience and safety upgrades found higher up the range.
• Touring: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds leather seating, heated front seats, a power liftgate, a larger 8-inch screen, and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. If you want the most useful upgrades without jumping too far in price, this is the trim to focus on.
• Grand Touring: This trim is the right choice if you want a more premium feel and more advanced equipment. It adds 20-inch wheels, navigation, a Bose premium stereo, a head-up display, and a broader suite of safety tech.
• Signature: This is the most upscale version, with Nappa leather, unique interior trim, and distinctive exterior details. It makes the most sense if you want the most luxurious CX-9 experience and are willing to pay for it.

The safety package expands as you move up the range, with more advanced driver-assistance features appearing on higher trims.

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 279 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.33% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 63.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $12,975, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Mazda CX-9's resale value?

The current average of $12,987 sits slightly below last year's $14,323.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, that also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle has been maintained. Clean history and strong equipment will matter more when you eventually go to sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Mazda CX-9 safe?

The 2016 Mazda CX-9 earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

It comes standard with front and side impact airbags, LATCH child seat anchoring, a backup camera, an engine immobilizer, and tire pressure monitoring. Available safety tech includes blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, backup sensors, and forward collision avoidance. Higher trims add more of the advanced driver-assistance content, so safety equipment is not evenly distributed across the lineup.

Should I buy a 2016 Mazda CX-9 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 63.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.33% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 stands out for its more-for-less approach, near-luxury feel, quieter cabin, and strong value positioning.

The bottom line: If you want the CX-9’s upscale feel at a lower used price, the 2016 is a strong place to start. If you’re shopping mainly on price and want the broadest pool of listings, you may still want to compare nearby model years and choose the cleanest, best-maintained example rather than focusing only on the badge year.

How does the 2016 Mazda CX-9 compare to the 2016 Honda Pilot?

Our experts score the 2016 Mazda CX-9 8.2/10 and the 2016 Honda Pilot 7.3/10. The CX-9 leans more upscale, with a quieter cabin and a more premium look and feel, while the Pilot is positioned more as a practical family SUV. If you care most about refinement and value-for-money luxury, the Mazda has the edge; if you want a more traditional family hauler, the Honda remains a strong alternative.
