Is the 2016 Lincoln MKX reliable?

Owners rate it 4.88/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with praise for the MKX’s smooth ride, luxurious features, and powerful yet economical engines. That combination suggests a vehicle many owners feel comfortable living with over time, especially when the cabin technology and comfort features are working as intended.

The expert review also describes the MKX as a vehicle with strong performance and a well-equipped character, which supports the idea that it can be a satisfying daily driver when maintained properly. Lincoln’s safety and driver-assistance features add another layer of confidence for long-term use.

For used buyers, the main ownership risk is that this model’s appeal depends heavily on condition and build quality, so a careful inspection matters more than usual.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Lincoln MKX?

At 66.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. A pre-purchase inspection is especially important on this model because condition and build quality can vary, and you’ll want to focus on how well the cabin, electronics, and safety systems have held up. Pay close attention to signs of wear, uneven panel fit, and any evidence that the vehicle’s premium features are not functioning as intended.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base MKX starts at $39,185, while a Reserve-equipped example with the turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 and AWD rises to $50,735 before additional options. The loaded test vehicle also added major option packages and upgrades, which shows how quickly equipment can stack up. The base cabin is described as less convincing than the exterior, so higher-spec examples may be more appealing if you want the full luxury experience.
• Powertrain: The standard 3.7-liter V6 is joined by an available turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 that makes 335 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque. The turbo engine is described as responsive and quick, especially with the 6-speed automatic in Sport mode. AWD is available, and the review notes that the MKX can feel more athletic in Sport mode, though it is still not as confidence-inspiring as some rivals when driven hard.
• Safety package: The Reserve equipment package includes blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert. The available Driver Assistance Package adds adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, brake support and automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and driver alert monitoring. MyKey and 911 Assist are also part of the safety story, and the driver can adjust how the systems warn and intervene.
• Infotainment: Sync 3 is the system you want, because it brings faster response time, improved voice recognition, better graphics, and a touchscreen interface that behaves more like a smartphone. The older MyLincoln Touch setup is described as slower and more frustrating to use. The MKX can also be equipped with a premium Revel audio system, a 360-degree camera view, and Enhanced Active Park Assist.
• Fuel efficiency: The turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 returned 18.5 mpg in testing, close to its official 19 mpg combined rating.

Which 2016 Lincoln MKX trim should I buy?

The 2016 Lincoln MKX is offered in 2 trim levels: MKX and Reserve.

Here's the short version:

• MKX: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core MKX experience without the added cost of the Reserve package. It makes sense if you want the styling, luxury crossover format, and available turbocharged power without stretching too far on price.
• Reserve: This is the better-value choice if you want the MKX to feel more complete. It adds the blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert, and it’s the trim tied to the loaded test vehicle’s more upscale equipment. If you want the strongest mix of luxury and safety content, this is the trim to target.

The safety package is a major part of the MKX’s appeal, and the available Driver Assistance Package is worth prioritizing if you want the most complete protection and convenience features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Lincoln MKX?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you focus on condition and price.

• Deal availability: 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 520 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.74% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 66.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $12,523, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Lincoln MKX's resale value?

The current average of $12,588 sits slightly below last year's $13,946.

That decline suggests the MKX has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can be helpful if you’re buying now and planning to sell later. If the market continues to favor shoppers, resale values may stay under pressure in the near term, especially for higher-mileage or poorly maintained examples.

For a future seller, the best protection is a clean history, strong maintenance records, and a well-kept cabin with working technology. Buyers in this segment tend to reward condition and equipment, so a nicer example should hold attention better than a rough one.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.88/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Lincoln MKX safe?

The 2016 Lincoln MKX earns five-star ratings in each federal crash-test assessment, along with a four-star rollover resistance rating from NHTSA. It also receives Good ratings for moderate offset frontal impact and side impact tests from IIHS.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

The MKX’s safety suite includes MyKey, 911 Assist, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert on Reserve, and an available Driver Assistance Package with adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, brake support and automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and driver alert monitoring. The driver can also adjust warning sensitivity and behavior so the systems work more subtly.

One caveat is that IIHS testing was incomplete at the time of the review, so not every crashworthiness result was finalized.

Should I buy a 2016 Lincoln MKX or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 66.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.74% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 MKX is a stylish, well-equipped luxury crossover with strong performance, a premium presentation, and a safety score of 10/10.

The bottom line: The 2016 MKX makes the most sense if you want the strongest mix of style, features, and value in this generation and you’re willing to shop carefully for a clean, well-maintained example. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the current market gives you room to compare listings and wait for a standout deal, but condition and history should stay at the top of your checklist.
