Is the 2016 Lincoln MKX reliable?

The expert driving notes also emphasize strong performance and a powertrain that feels responsive and quick, which supports the impression of a vehicle you can count on for regular driving.

That said, used buyers should still pay close attention to maintenance history and overall condition, since long-term ownership risk can rise if prior care was inconsistent.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Lincoln MKX?

At 68% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the cabin and electronics still feel consistent with the vehicle’s premium positioning. If you can, compare several examples so you can separate a clean, well-kept MKX from one that has been cosmetically refreshed after damage.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The cabin presentation can vary a lot, and the base setup is less convincing than the better-equipped versions. Look closely at the interior materials, touch points, and whether the vehicle has the more desirable premium equipment that helps the MKX feel like a true luxury crossover.
• Powertrain: The standard V6 is described as powerful, while the turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 adds more torque and quicker response. If you want the strongest driving feel, the turbocharged setup is the one to seek out.
• Safety package: The available driver-assistance package adds adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, brake support and automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist, and driver alert monitoring. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert is included with the Reserve equipment package.
• Infotainment: Look for the Sync 3 system rather than the older MyLincoln Touch setup. The newer system is faster, easier to use, and better suited to everyday driving.
• Fuel efficiency: The turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 returned 18.5 mpg in testing, with an official combined rating of 19 mpg.

Which 2016 Lincoln MKX trim should I buy?

The 2016 Lincoln MKX is offered in 2 trim levels: Base and Reserve.

Here's the short version:

• Base: This is the entry point, but the content makes clear that the MKX feels more convincing when it’s better equipped. If you’re shopping on a tighter budget, this is the trim to compare first, but you’ll want to verify that it has the features you care about most.
• Reserve: This is the better-value choice if you want the MKX to feel properly premium. It adds important equipment, including blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, and it’s the trim that better matches the vehicle’s luxury mission.

The safety package is especially worth seeking out because it adds a meaningful layer of driver assistance and crash-avoidance technology.

What is the 2016 Lincoln MKX's resale value?

The current average of $12,449 sits slightly below last year's $13,826.

That kind of price movement suggests the MKX has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help if you buy now and plan to sell later. If the market continues to favor shoppers, resale values may stay under pressure unless a particular example stands out for condition, equipment, and history.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

You can also configure the systems so they work more subtly in the background.

IIHS testing was incomplete in the source material, so you should still verify the specific crash-test coverage and equipment on any used example you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2016 Lincoln MKX or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 68% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.96% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 MKX is a stylish, well-equipped luxury crossover with responsive turbocharged performance and a strong safety score.

The bottom line: If you want the MKX’s premium styling, strong safety, and appealing feature set, the 2016 is a sensible target year to shop. If you’re especially price-sensitive, focus on the cleanest, best-equipped listings rather than chasing the lowest sticker price, since condition and equipment make a big difference in how well this SUV delivers on its luxury promise.

How does the 2016 Lincoln MKX compare to the 2016 Ford Edge?

Our experts score the 2016 Lincoln MKX 6.7/10 and the 2016 Ford Edge 8.5/10.

The MKX brings the more upscale presentation and stronger luxury identity, while the Edge offers the better overall expert score and a lower average used price. The MKX also has a smaller pool of listings, so you may need to shop more carefully to find the right combination of condition and equipment. If you want the more premium-feeling choice, the Lincoln has the edge; if you want the stronger value proposition, the Ford is the easier recommendation.
