Is the 2016 Kia Sedona a good car?

The model blends SUV-inspired styling with minivan practicality, and the top SXL trim adds a more upscale feel with luxury-car materials and features. Is the 2016 Kia Sedona reliable?

Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The Sedona is described as an average ownership proposition in quality and reliability terms, but it also benefits from a redesigned platform and a practical minivan formula that tends to make family use easier to live with. Its 3.3-liter V6 and 6-speed automatic are presented as strong, refined pieces, and the powertrain is described as responsive and well suited to hauling passengers and cargo. Kia also notes that some buyers may find free maintenance included in certain offers.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the vehicle has been maintained well and that any wear from family use has been addressed before you buy.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Kia Sedona?

At 57.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage family hauler. Focus on signs of interior wear, evidence of prior body repair, and whether the safety and convenience features work as intended. If you’re shopping a used minivan, condition matters as much as mileage.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Sedona’s styling leans SUV-like, and the top SXL trim adds luxury-car materials and features that make it feel more upscale than the lower trims. Base versions are more straightforward, so you should pay attention to which comfort and convenience features are missing before you decide.
• Powertrain: The 3.3-liter V6 produces 276 horsepower and is paired with a 6-speed automatic. The engine is described as strong and responsive, with enough reserve power for passing and a composed feel when loaded with passengers or cargo.
• Safety package: UVO eServices includes teen-monitoring features such as speed, curfew, and boundary alerts. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert is available for the EX and standard on the SX and SXL, while the Technology Package adds adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights.
• Infotainment: Kia’s UVO eServices system uses an 8-inch touchscreen and includes connected services, emergency calling, automatic collision notification, and a parking minder. The SX and SXL can also get navigation, a premium audio system, and a surround-view monitoring system.
• Fuel efficiency: The Sedona is described as averaging 22.1 mpg on a highway-heavy drive and 19.1 mpg in combined driving, with an EPA estimate of 17 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined.

Which 2016 Kia Sedona trim should I buy?

The 2016 Kia Sedona is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LX, EX, SX, and SXL (SX Limited).

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Sedona’s space and SUV-like styling. You should expect fewer convenience and tech features than the higher trims.
• LX: This is the trim to consider if you want a more balanced starting point, since UVO eServices is optional here and standard on the higher versions. It’s the better value if you want the Sedona experience without stretching too far up the range.
• EX: This is the first trim where blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert becomes available, which makes it a smart step up if safety tech matters to you.
• SX: This trim adds more premium equipment and makes blind-spot warning standard, while also opening the door to the Technology Package with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights.
• SXL (SX Limited): This is the most upscale choice, with the most luxury-like presentation and the richest feature set. It’s the trim to buy if you want the Sedona to feel as close to a premium family vehicle as possible.

The safety-package upgrades are especially important on the SX and SXL, since the Technology Package adds several advanced driver-assistance features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Kia Sedona?

• Deal availability: 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 357 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.55% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 57.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $8,796, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Kia Sedona's resale value?

The current average of $8,818 sits slightly below last year's $9,437.

That decline suggests the market has softened, which can be good news if you’re buying now but less favorable if you’re planning to sell soon. If you own one, pricing it competitively will matter, especially because shoppers have a decent number of listings to compare against. The upside is that a well-kept Sedona still has appeal as a practical family vehicle with a more distinctive look than many rivals.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Kia Sedona safe?

The 2016 Kia Sedona earns five-star ratings in every federal crash assessment and a four-star rollover resistance rating from NHTSA, and it gets the top rating of Good in all IIHS crash tests.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

The Sedona includes UVO eServices with teen-monitoring features such as speed, curfew, and boundary alerts. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert is available for the EX and standard on the SX and SXL, while the Technology Package adds adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. The IIHS frontal crash prevention result is only Basic, so that’s the main safety shortcoming to keep in mind.

Should I buy a 2016 Kia Sedona or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 57.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.55% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 stands out for blending SUV-inspired styling with minivan practicality, plus top-notch safety ratings and a more upscale SXL presentation.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, inventory, and distinctive family-hauler appeal, the 2016 is a sensible place to start. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can focus on lower-priced listings and prioritize condition over trim level, since the market gives you enough inventory to be selective.
