CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Kia Sedona
overall

Summary
With 338 currently listed for sale and an average price of $8,666, 29.9% of 2016 Kia Sedonas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Kia Sedona 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
60.1% of 2016 Sedona models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Kia Sedona stands out by blending SUV-inspired design cues with the utility and practicality of a minivan. Kia also gives the top-of-the-line SXL model the materials and features of a luxury car, which helps the Sedona feel more upscale than many family haulers.
That combination makes the 2016 Kia Sedona appealing to buyers who want minivan usefulness without giving up a more polished, premium atmosphere. It also earns a strong reputation on the safety front, with top-notch safety ratings adding to its appeal. The main limitation is implied by the comparison itself: even with its crossover-like styling, it remains a minivan rather than a true SUV.

The only thing this car is missing is full STOW & GO, Otherwise this van is SO much better than our 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan which we traded in on this Sedona. This has better brakes, seats, comfort features (power sliding doors etc.) Power drivers seat, Heated seats. This Van drives and handles more like a car, Tighter turning circle and more responsive driving, Which is good for people who CAN drive. This is a good buy.

How much does the 2016 Kia Sedona cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $8,676 |
| Year-Round Low | $8,676 |
| Year-Round High | $9,458 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $9,399 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.69% |
Prices have softened 7.69% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 343 listings available, which gives you a modest pool to compare prices and equipment.
Is the 2016 Kia Sedona a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Kia Sedona earns a 4.5/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Technology.
The Sedona stands out by blending SUV-inspired design cues with the utility and practicality of a minivan, and the top-of-the-line SXL adds materials and features that make it feel more upscale than many family haulers. That makes it a strong fit if you want minivan usefulness without giving up a more polished, premium atmosphere. The market also shows 30.3% of listings as good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Kia Sedona reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Sedona’s overall ownership story is helped by its practical design, strong safety reputation, and the fact that it was redesigned relatively recently for this model year. The expert review also notes that quality and reliability are about average, so you should expect a sensible family hauler rather than a standout in durability bragging rights. The performance writeup describes the powertrain as refined and the vehicle as composed when loaded, which supports the idea that it should hold up well in everyday family use.
If you’re shopping used, the main long-term risk is buying a neglected example with prior damage or deferred maintenance, so condition and history matter more than the badge alone.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Kia Sedona?
At 59.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, evidence of prior repairs, and whether the safety and convenience features work as expected. Because this model was designed to balance family utility with a more premium feel, you’ll want to make sure the cabin, electronics, and seating hardware still reflect that promise.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes L, LX, EX, SX, and SXL (SX Limited). The LX is the entry point, while the SXL adds the most upscale materials and features; the Technology Package changes the second-row seating layout and removes some luxury touches, so check carefully for feature gaps on lower trims and package-equipped models.
- Powertrain: The Sedona uses a 3.3-liter V6 with 276 horsepower and a 6-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels. The review notes strong passing power, refined shifting, and an EPA estimate of 17 mpg city/22 highway/19 combined.
- Safety package: The Technology Package adds adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert is available for the EX and standard on the SX and SXL.
- Infotainment: UVO eServices uses an 8-inch touchscreen and supports connected services through your smartphone and Bluetooth. It also includes emergency calling, automatic collision notification, a parking minder, teen-monitoring alerts, Jukebox storage, USB ports, and Pandora Internet radio.
- Fuel efficiency: The review records 22.1 mpg on a highway-heavy run with a full load and 19.1 mpg in combined driving, matching the EPA’s 19 mpg combined estimate.
Which 2016 Kia Sedona trim should I buy?
The 2016 Kia Sedona is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LX, EX, SX, and SXL (SX Limited).
Here's the short version:
- L: This is the least expensive way into the Sedona, but you should expect the fewest features. It makes sense only if price is your top priority and you’re comfortable giving up the nicer equipment found higher up the range.
- LX: This is the trim to target if you want the best value. It adds the core Sedona experience without pushing you into the higher-priced luxury and tech content of the upper trims.
- EX: This is the smart step-up if you want more convenience and safety equipment. It’s also the trim where blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert becomes available.
- SX: This trim brings more premium content and makes the safety tech more complete, since blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert is standard here. It’s a good choice if you want a more upscale family hauler without going all the way to the top.
- SXL (SX Limited): This is the most luxurious version, with the richest materials and features. Choose it if you want the most premium Sedona experience and don’t mind paying for it.
The safety-package trim note is simple: the Technology Package is available on the SX and SXL, and it adds adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Kia Sedona?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right listing.
- Deal availability: 30.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 343 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.69% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $8,676, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Kia Sedona's resale value?
The current average of $8,676 sits slightly below last year's $9,399.
That price movement suggests the Sedona has already absorbed some of its near-term depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right number today. If you purchase near the lower end of the range and keep the vehicle in clean condition, you’ll be better positioned when it’s time to resell. The market still shows enough inventory and deal activity to support active shopping, but not so much strength that you should expect prices to rebound quickly.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Kia Sedona safe?
The 2016 Kia Sedona earns five-star ratings in every federal government assessment, along with a four-star rollover resistance rating. It also earns the top rating of Good in all IIHS crash tests, with a Basic rating for frontal crash prevention.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
The Sedona includes UVO eServices with teen-monitoring features such as speed, curfew, and boundary alerts. A blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert is available for the EX and standard on the SX and SXL. If you choose the Technology Package on the SX or SXL, you also get adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights.
One caveat is that the frontal crash prevention result is only Basic, so if safety is a top priority, you should pay close attention to whether a used example has the available driver-assistance equipment and whether it’s functioning properly.
Should I buy a 2016 Kia Sedona or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.69% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert review says the Sedona blends SUV design cues with minivan practicality and gives the top SXL a more luxury-car feel.
The bottom line: The 2016 is a strong pick if you want a minivan that feels more upscale than most and you can find one with clean history and the right equipment. If you’re price-sensitive, the current market gives you enough inventory and deal activity to shop selectively, but you should still prioritize condition and safety features over the lowest sticker price.
