How much does the 2016 Jeep Wrangler cost?

Prices have softened 7.80% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

With 5,791 listings available, you have a solid amount of inventory to compare before you buy.

Is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Jeep Wrangler earns a 4.6/5 user rating and a 6.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its fun driving experience, comfortable interior, and impressive power, especially with the manual transmission. The Wrangler’s simplicity and lower repair costs also come up as positives, which matters if you want a vehicle that feels straightforward to own. In use, it fits best if you want a convertible, 4-wheel-drive SUV with a clear identity and strong year-round capability rather than a polished commuter.

The market also shows healthy interest, with 32.9% of listings marked as good or great deals.

Is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler reliable?

Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience for many shoppers, with praise for the Wrangler’s simplicity and lower repair costs. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that you can buy one knowing what you’ll get, which supports the idea that it’s a familiar, predictable vehicle for long-term use. The cost-effectiveness notes also suggest that its straightforward design can help keep ownership manageable.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that condition varies widely, so maintenance history and prior use matter a lot.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Jeep Wrangler?

At 65.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a hands-on inspection of the body, roof, doors, and undercarriage. Because this model is often used hard, condition matters as much as mileage, especially if you plan to drive it off road or keep it long term. Pay close attention to signs of wear that could affect comfort, usability, or repair costs.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Sport is the most basic version, with manual windows and door locks, air conditioning, 16-inch steel wheels, and cloth seats. Sport S adds power locks and windows, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and 17-inch aluminum wheels. Sahara adds brighter interior treatment, automatic headlights, 18-inch polished wheels, Sirius satellite radio, and color-keyed fender flares. Rubicon is the most trail-focused trim, with BF Goodrich off-road tires and an electronically disconnecting front sway bar.
• Powertrain: Every version uses a 3.6-liter V6 with 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, paired with either a 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission. Standard 4-wheel drive is included, and the Rubicon gets Rock-Trac with a 4:1 rock crawling ratio.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes multistage airbags, electronic stability control, electronic roll mitigation, and ultra-strong roll bars. It does not offer lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision avoidance, or a backup camera.
• Infotainment: The base setup is Radio 130 with a CD player, MP3 capability, and a front auxiliary audio jack. An upgraded radio adds satellite capability, and the available 6.5-inch touchscreen brings GPS navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and front-facing aux audio and USB inputs.
• Fuel efficiency: The Wrangler Unlimited is estimated at 16 mpg city, 21 highway, and 18 combined with the manual transmission. With the automatic, highway mileage drops to 20 mpg.

Which 2016 Jeep Wrangler trim should I buy?

The 2016 Jeep Wrangler is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Wrangler basics at the lowest starting price. It makes sense if you want the core Wrangler experience and plan to keep things simple.
• Sport S: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday upgrades like power windows and locks, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• Sahara: Choose this if you want a more polished cabin and more convenience features, including automatic headlights, brighter interior accents, and larger polished wheels.
• Rubicon: This is the trim to buy if off-road capability is your priority. It adds BF Goodrich off-road tires and an electronically disconnecting front sway bar, making it the most trail-ready choice.

Safety equipment is standard across the lineup, but the Wrangler still lacks several modern driver-assistance features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Jeep Wrangler?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and pricing movement to reward comparison shopping.

• Deal availability: 32.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 5,791 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.80% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 65.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $17,462, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler's resale value?

The current average of $17,462 sits slightly below last year's $18,939.

That softer pricing suggests the market has become more favorable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price carefully to stay competitive. If you buy well now, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation pressure later. The Wrangler’s strong enthusiast appeal can help support demand, especially for well-kept examples with desirable equipment.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler safe?

The 2016 Jeep Wrangler earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.

It comes standard with multistage airbags, electronic stability control, electronic roll mitigation, and ultra-strong roll bars. It also includes trailer sway control, which can help when towing in crosswinds. At the same time, it lacks several modern safety technologies, including lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision avoidance, and even a backup camera.

That means you should treat safety as a key tradeoff if you’re shopping this model year, especially if you want the latest driver-assistance features.

Should I buy a 2016 Jeep Wrangler or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 32.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 65.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.80% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines open-air freedom, standard 4-wheel drive, and strong off-road capability.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $16,434, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $17,462 average.
• It stays true to the Wrangler formula while adding an upgraded sound system and fresh editions.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest balance of current pricing, broad inventory, and the classic Wrangler formula, the 2016 is the better starting point. If your main goal is to spend less upfront, the 2015 is worth a look, especially if you find a clean example with the equipment you want.
