How much does the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee cost?

Prices have softened 8.67% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 3,259 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.

Is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 6.8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10. Owners consistently praise its comfort, performance, and luxurious features, along with the spacious interior and strong engine feel. It also fits well if you want an SUV that can handle everyday driving while still offering rugged capability and a distinctive Jeep presence. With 32.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have room to shop selectively.

Is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee reliable?

Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. Owner feedback points to comfort, performance, and a luxurious feel, while also highlighting the spacious cabin and powerful engine as reasons people feel good about living with it. The expert review also emphasizes that the Grand Cherokee is built for capability and can handle demanding use, but it comes with compromises that matter over time. For used buyers, that means you should pay close attention to maintenance history and overall condition, especially if the vehicle has been used hard.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

At 58% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection. Focus on signs of prior damage, uneven wear, and any evidence that the SUV has been used for towing or off-road driving. Because this model is valued for capability, you want to make sure the condition matches the seller’s claims before you commit.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Jeep sells this SUV in Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit, and SRT model series. The Overland test vehicle adds a 19-speaker sound system and an Advanced Technology package, while the SRT is described as track-ready on pavement.
• Powertrain: The standard 3.6-liter V6 makes 295 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, and an optional 5.7-liter V8 is available for maximum towing capacity. The diesel V6 is also mentioned as an option, and the 2016 model gets updated fuel-saving hardware including stop/start, electric steering, aluminum suspension components, and low-rolling-resistance tires.
• Safety package: The optional Advanced Technology package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. That package is pricey, so you should confirm whether a used example has it.
• Infotainment: Uconnect uses an 8.4-inch color touchscreen in the Overland, with Siri Eyes Free and Do Not Disturb added for 2016. The system is easy to use, but the navigation response is slow and Uconnect Access relies on a 3G hotspot.
• Fuel efficiency: The updated V6 is rated at 21 mpg combined, and the diesel test result cited 22.9 mpg.

Which 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee trim should I buy?

The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee is offered in 5 trim levels: Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit, and SRT.

Here's the short version:

• Laredo: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Grand Cherokee’s core capability and styling without paying for extra luxury or tech.
• Limited: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it sits in the middle of the lineup and should give you a better balance of equipment and price than the lower trim.
• Overland: This is the trim to target if you want the more upscale feel highlighted in the test vehicle, including the larger touchscreen and available advanced safety tech.
• Summit: Choose this if you want the most luxury-oriented version of the standard lineup and are willing to pay more for it.
• SRT: This is the performance-focused choice, and the source describes it as track-ready on pavement.

The safety package is optional on the test vehicle, so verify whether a used Grand Cherokee has the Advanced Technology package before you buy.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 3,259 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.67% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 58.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $12,921, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee's resale value?

The current average of $12,921 sits slightly below last year's $14,148.

That softer pricing suggests the market has moved in buyers’ favor, which can make resale more challenging if you buy at the wrong price. If you plan to sell later, your best protection is to buy carefully now and avoid overpaying for a high-mileage or rough-condition example. A well-kept Grand Cherokee should still attract interest because it has broad appeal and a strong reputation for capability.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee safe?

The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee does not meet the criteria for a Top Safety Pick nomination from IIHS because of a Marginal rating in the small overlap frontal impact test.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The optional Advanced Technology package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. That package is not standard, so you should confirm whether a used example has it. The safety story is mixed: the available driver-assistance tech is useful, but the IIHS result is a meaningful caution flag.

Should I buy a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 58% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.67% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 adds updated fuel-saving hardware and available advanced safety tech.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $11,459, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $12,921 average.
• It offers broad trim and engine choice with a capable, comfortable personality.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $14,154, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $12,921 average.
• It emphasizes upscale interiors and strong off-road identity.

The bottom line: The 2016 makes sense if you want the updated model-year pricing and can find a clean example with the right equipment. If you’re price-sensitive, the 2015 is the easier value play; if you want to spend more for a newer-year alternative, the 2017 is the step up to compare.

How does the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee compare to the 2016 Ford Explorer?

Our experts score the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee 6.8/10 and the 2016 Ford Explorer 6.8/10. The Jeep brings stronger fuel economy, more listings at a slightly higher average price, and a more distinctive capability-first personality. The Explorer undercuts it on average used price and has a larger inventory pool, while also showing a higher accident-free share. If you want the more rugged, image-driven SUV, the Grand Cherokee has the edge; if you want to shop a bit cheaper with more clean examples, the Explorer is worth a look.
