I really liked this vehicle when I took it for a test drive. The interior was clean, the original owner's manual was available, and it drove very smoothly. I wasn't able to test it at highway speeds because I was in a School Zone. I definitely would have bought it, but I couldn't justify the need for it. Some lucky person will snatch it up, I'm sure.

Worst car Ive ever owned. 3 out of 4 doors stopped working (couldnt open or close them), leaks oil, transmission overheats when backing up an incline slowly, AC died after 80K km, Im just waiting for the transmission to fail as that is a well know problem and car jerks or doesnt move upon initial acceleration. DO NOT BUY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. Consumer Reports gives reliability as 1 out of 10 (likely only because you cant give zero)

I think this car is a very good for its price, the interior is so good. Only issue so far, is that the fuel consumption is quite high.

If you find a listing below $11,201.22, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Hyundai Tucson a good car?
With a 3.83/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating, the 2016 Hyundai Tucson looks like a well-rounded used compact SUV with a few important caveats.
The model scores 10/10 across Look and feel and Safety.
Drivers repeatedly praise the smooth ride, comfortable interior, and reliability, and many also like the cooled seats and panoramic roof. The Tucson’s appeal is strongest if you want a compact SUV that feels more polished and practical than basic, with a cabin that works well for everyday use. That lines up with the model’s positioning as a comfortable, functional small crossover with strong safety credentials and lots of available equipment.
The market also shows 33.1% good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Hyundai Tucson reliable?
The 2016 Hyundai Tucson benefits from Hyundai’s long warranty reputation and a history that points toward solid durability, which supports its dependability story.
Owners also describe it as reliable, and the feedback includes language about trouble-free ownership and confidence in the long term. On the expert side, the Tucson is described as relatively affordable to own, with decent gas mileage and free roadside assistance for the first 5 years or 60,000 miles of ownership. That said, the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission is the main long-term ownership risk for used buyers, so you should pay close attention to how smoothly it drives in low-speed traffic and during takeoff.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Hyundai Tucson?
At 62.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, repair quality, and how the transmission behaves in stop-and-go driving, since those are the kinds of issues that can matter most on a used compact SUV. It also helps to compare equipment carefully, because some desirable safety and convenience features were reserved for higher trims or packages.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SE is the base trim, while Sport and Limited add more equipment. The base version lacks the blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert and lane-change assist, and it also misses the hands-free power liftgate that comes on Sport and Limited models.
- Powertrain: Every version except the base SE uses a turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine with 175 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission. The setup delivers strong midrange acceleration, but low-speed lag is a real concern.
- Safety package: The blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert and lane-change assist is standard on Sport and Limited models. The Limited trim and its optional Ultimate Package are required for automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and the Ultimate Package also adds lane-departure warning.
- Infotainment: Limited models add an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation, a premium sound system, and Blue Link connected services. Blue Link includes SOS emergency calling and automatic collision notification for the first year, with remote access features available through upgraded service plans.
- Fuel efficiency: The Tucson is rated at 24 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined, and the test average came in at 24.7 mpg.
Which 2016 Hyundai Tucson trim should I buy?
The 2016 Hyundai Tucson is offered in 4 trim levels: SE, Eco, Sport, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SE is the least equipped choice, and it misses the blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert and lane-change assist that comes on Sport and Limited models. It also does not get the hands-free power liftgate.
- Sweet-spot trim: Sport is the best value if you want a stronger feature mix without going all the way to the top. It adds the hands-free power liftgate and the blind-spot warning system, which makes it a more complete everyday choice than the SE.
- Premium/top trim: Limited is the most fully featured version, adding the 8-inch touchscreen with navigation, premium audio, dual-zone automatic climate control, and Blue Link connected services. If you want the most tech and convenience, this is the trim to target.
- Off-road trim: Even with AWD and hill-start and downhill brake control, this Tucson is not really intended for more than a well-worn trail, so it is not the best pick if your daily driving is mostly pavement.
The safety package is strongest on Sport and Limited, and the Ultimate Package is required if you want automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection and lane-departure warning.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Hyundai Tucson?
The market looks selective rather than overheated, so you can shop with patience and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,636 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.87% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,201.22, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Hyundai Tucson's resale value?
The current average of $11,481 sits slightly below last year's $12,068.
That price movement suggests the Tucson has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help you as a buyer today. For a future seller, it means the model is still in a value-sensitive part of its lifecycle, so condition and equipment will matter a lot when it comes time to resell. A well-kept example with desirable features should hold up better than a higher-mileage or poorly documented one.
Is the 2016 Hyundai Tucson safe?
The Tucson was rated a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS, and it also earned Good ratings in every crash-test assessment plus a Superior rating for front crash prevention.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Every 2016 Tucson comes with a standard reversing camera, and Sport and Limited models add blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert and lane-change assist. The Limited trim and its optional Ultimate Package are required for automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and the Ultimate Package also adds lane-departure warning. That means the safest versions are the better-equipped trims, while the base model leaves some advanced driver-assistance features off the table.
Should I buy a 2016 Hyundai Tucson or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.87% compared with last year.
- It gives you a thoroughly redesigned Tucson with strong styling, a more functional interior, and top safety ratings.
The bottom line: The 2016 Tucson makes sense if you want the redesigned look, strong safety credentials, and a market that has softened enough to create buying opportunities. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can still shop carefully and focus on the best-documented, cleanest examples, but the 2016 is the better choice when you want the newer design and equipment balance.
