There are 1,282 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.

Is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Hyundai Elantra earns a 4.7/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.

Drivers consistently praise its comfort, reliability, and excellent fuel economy, and they also like its smooth ride and attractive design. That lines up with the overview’s focus on a roomy, efficient, simple sedan that feels easy to live with for everyday use. With 27.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding strong value in the market.

Is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra reliable?

Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback repeatedly points to reliability, and the car is also described as dependable and a good choice for buyers who want something they can count on. The driving evaluation reinforces that impression by describing the drivetrain as straightforward and free of aggravation, while the ownership-cost section highlights favorable dependability ratings and strong warranty coverage. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure prior wear and maintenance history are clean before you commit.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Hyundai Elantra?

At 47.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in any collision. Focus on body condition, panel alignment, and signs of repair quality, since those are the kinds of issues that can matter most on a used compact sedan. It also makes sense to confirm that the features you want are actually present, because equipment varies by trim.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SE is the entry point, the Value Edition adds value-focused upgrades, the Sport brings a more powerful setup and tighter suspension, and the Limited is the upscale choice. The base SE is missing the reversing camera that comes on higher versions, so that’s an important feature gap to check if you want easier parking and backing visibility.
• Powertrain: Most versions use a 145-hp 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine, while the Sport trims are the exception. The SE uses a 6-speed manual, and the Value Edition and Limited use a 6-speed automatic with a manual shift gate and Active Eco setting. The setup is tuned for predictable, efficient everyday driving rather than excitement.
• Safety package: The car does not offer modern driver-assistance and crash-avoidance technologies. A reversing camera is standard on all but the base SE, and the safety writeup notes that the car earned an overall five-star federal crash rating and Good IIHS results except for an Acceptable small-overlap frontal result.
• Infotainment: The SE can get a touchscreen radio system with Bluetooth, while the Sport and Limited upgrade to a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Pandora access, navigation, a premium sound system, and Blue Link subscription services. The smaller 4.3-inch display on lower versions is a limitation if you want a more modern interface.
• Fuel efficiency: The official EPA ratings are 28 mpg city/38 highway/32 combined, and the test loop returned 33.8 mpg. That makes efficiency one of the Elantra’s strongest everyday advantages.

Which 2016 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?

The 2016 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 4 trim levels: SE, Value Edition, Sport, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the cheapest path into the Elantra, and it makes sense if you want basic transportation with the manual transmission and don’t mind giving up some convenience features. It’s the trim to choose only if price matters more than equipment.
• Value Edition: This is the best-value trim because it adds a more polished feel without pushing the price into the upper end of the range. It gets the automatic transmission, Active Eco setting, and the kind of value-focused equipment that fits the car’s mission especially well.
• Sport: Choose this if you want the more powerful version and a tighter suspension. It’s the right pick if you care more about a sportier driving character than maximum comfort or simplicity.
• Limited: This is the most upscale choice, and it’s the one to consider if you want the most features and the most polished cabin experience. It suits you best if you want the Elantra to feel a little more premium than its price suggests.

The safety package is limited compared with newer rivals, so make sure the trim you choose includes the features you care about most.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Hyundai Elantra?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.

• Deal availability: 27.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,282 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.04% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 47.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $7,968, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?

The current average of $8,169 sits slightly below last year's $8,513.

That decline suggests the market has softened, which can help you as a buyer today but may temper what you recover later as a seller. If you plan to resell, the current pricing trend means you should be realistic about future depreciation rather than expecting a quick rebound. Strong value perception and efficient ownership costs can still help support demand when it’s time to sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra safe?

The 2016 Hyundai Elantra earns five-star ratings from NHTSA and Good ratings in all IIHS tests except the small overlap frontal impact evaluation, where it receives an Acceptable rating.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

The safety package includes a reversing camera on all but the base SE, but the car is not available with modern driver-assistance and crash-avoidance technologies. That means you should not expect the kind of active-safety suite found in newer compact cars. The main caveat is the IIHS small-overlap frontal result, which is weaker than the rest of its crash-test performance.

Should I buy a 2016 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 27.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 47.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.04% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It balances value, efficiency, and everyday usability without feeling demanding.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $7,636, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $8,169 average.
• It offers strong value, generous space, and useful features.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $9,335, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $8,169 average.
• It brings a fresh redesign with stronger technology and safety emphasis.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, efficiency, and everyday livability, the 2016 is the sensible default. If you’re focused on saving money, the 2015 is the cheaper route; if you want a newer-feeling package with more tech, the 2017 is the upgrade path.
