Is the 2016 Honda HR-V reliable?

Owner feedback repeatedly points to reliability, and the summary also emphasizes a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience. The performance writeup reinforces that impression by describing the powertrain response as strong and satisfying in normal driving, while the cost-effectiveness section notes that the HR-V is a good bet on reliability. It also mentions 100,000-mile tuneup intervals, which is a useful ownership perk.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about whether a given example has been maintained well and whether its electronics and starting behavior have been trouble-free.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Honda HR-V?

At 52.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a close inspection of body panels, paint match, and signs of prior repair. Because owner feedback mentions occasional starting issues tied to the non-standard keys, it’s smart to test the starting system carefully and confirm that all keys and related functions work as expected. You should also pay attention to cabin storage and everyday usability, since some owners wanted more space.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LX covers the basics with a rear-view camera, the Magic Seat rear seat, 17-inch alloy wheels, and a 5-inch color LCD audio system, while the EX adds automatic climate control, a power moonroof, heated front seats, push-button start, and a 7-inch touchscreen. The EX-L with Navigation adds leather-trimmed seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, roof rails, and navigation, so it’s the best-value choice if you want the most comfort and convenience.
• Powertrain: All HR-V models use a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine with 141 hp and 128 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel drive with a 6-speed manual transmission is standard, a CVT is available, and all-wheel drive models use the CVT.
• Safety package: The standard safety equipment includes a rear-view camera, brake assist, and vehicle stability assist, while Honda’s ACE body structure and an expanded-view driver’s-side mirror add protection. Honda LaneWatch is optional, so not every listing will have that extra camera-based visibility aid.
• Infotainment: The LX uses a 5-inch color LCD, while the EX upgrades to a 7-inch WVGA touchscreen with dual USB ports and 180 watts powering 6 speakers. The system includes Bluetooth, Pandora integration, HondaLink Next Generation, SMS text-message capability, and navigation with traffic information on equipped trims.
• Fuel efficiency: The HR-V is rated at 28 mpg city and 35 highway, and the cost-effectiveness section says FWD trim can return 31 mpg combined while AWD versions are rated at 29 mpg combined.

Which 2016 Honda HR-V trim should I buy?

The 2016 Honda HR-V is offered in 3 trim levels: LX, EX, and EX-L with Navigation.

Here's the short version:

• LX: This is the entry point, but it still gives you the rear-view camera, Magic Seat rear seat, alloy wheels, and the basic audio setup. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the HR-V, but it’s also the trim where you feel the most feature gaps.
• EX: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the comfort and convenience upgrades that make daily use easier, including automatic climate control, heated front seats, push-button start, a moonroof, and the larger touchscreen.
• EX-L with Navigation: Choose this if you want the most upscale HR-V experience, since it layers on leather, roof rails, and navigation on top of the EX equipment.

The safety content notes that Honda LaneWatch is optional, so you should confirm whether a given listing has it if that feature matters to you.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Honda HR-V?

This looks like a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 627 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 52.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $13,042, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Honda HR-V's resale value?

The current average of $13,518 sits slightly above last year's $13,384.

That modest increase suggests the HR-V has held its value fairly well rather than swinging sharply in either direction. For a future seller, that kind of stability is helpful because it points to a market that is still willing to pay consistent money for the model. The combination of steady pricing and broad shopper appeal should help support demand if you keep the vehicle in good condition.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Honda HR-V safe?

The 2016 Honda HR-V earns an overall five-star safety rating from the U.S. Government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard safety equipment includes a rear-view camera, brake assist, and vehicle stability assist, and Honda’s ACE body structure is designed to channel crash energy around occupants. Honda LaneWatch is optional, so not every trim will have that extra camera-based visibility aid. The main caveat is that the infotainment and camera-based interfaces can be distracting to use while driving, which is a real safety concern even if the underlying crash rating is strong.

Should I buy a 2016 Honda HR-V or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 52.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Sales of small SUVs and crossovers are growing aggressively, and the 2016 HR-V is Honda’s new entry into that fast-growing segment.

The bottom line: The 2016 HR-V makes sense if you want a compact crossover with strong owner satisfaction, steady pricing, and broad everyday appeal. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can still shop carefully and target the lower end of the market, but the best approach is to focus on condition, history, and trim equipment rather than chasing the absolute cheapest example.
