Owners consistently point to good value, smooth driving, and spaciousness, and they also call out the passenger mirror camera as a useful feature. What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Honda HR-V?

At 54.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Pay close attention to body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the vehicle’s features work as expected, since the HR-V’s usability depends heavily on its equipment and controls. It’s also worth checking for any starting or electrical quirks mentioned by owners, along with overall interior condition and storage practicality.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LX covers the basics with a rear-view camera, Magic Seat rear seat, 17-inch alloy wheels, and a 5-inch color LCD audio system, while the EX adds automatic climate control, rear privacy glass, a power moonroof, heated front seats, push-button start, automatic headlights, and a 7-inch touchscreen. The EX-L with Navigation adds roof rails, leather-trimmed seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and navigation.
• Powertrain: All HR-V models use a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine with 141 hp and 128 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel drive with a 6-speed manual transmission is standard, while the CVT is available and is paired with Honda’s Real Time all-wheel-drive system.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes a rear-view camera, brake assist, and vehicle stability assist, with Honda’s ACE body structure also part of the safety story. Honda LaneWatch is optional, and the feature set is not as extensive on lower trims.
• Infotainment: The LX uses a 5-inch color LCD, while the EX upgrades to a 7-inch WVGA touchscreen with dual USB ports and 180 watts powering 6 speakers. The system includes Bluetooth, Pandora integration, HondaLink Next Generation, SMS text-message capability, and navigation with traffic information on equipped trims.
• Fuel efficiency: The HR-V is rated at 28 mpg city and 35 highway, and the cost-effectiveness review notes 31 mpg combined for FWD and 29 mpg combined for AWD.

Which 2016 Honda HR-V trim should I buy?

The 2016 Honda HR-V is offered in 3 trim levels: LX, EX, and EX-L with Navigation.

Here's the short version:

• LX: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry point and the core HR-V experience. You still get the rear-view camera, Magic Seat rear seat, alloy wheels, and basic connectivity, so it covers the essentials well.
• EX: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the comfort and convenience upgrades that make daily use easier, including automatic climate control, heated front seats, push-button start, and the larger touchscreen.
• EX-L with Navigation: Choose this if you want the most upscale HR-V setup, with leather-trimmed seating, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, roof rails, and built-in navigation.

The safety package centers on a rear-view camera, brake assist, and vehicle stability assist, with Honda LaneWatch available as an option.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Honda HR-V?

This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to shop carefully and compare listings before moving quickly.

• Deal availability: 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 595 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.06% year-over-year.
• Clean inventory: 54.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $13,042, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Honda HR-V's resale value?

The current average of $13,523 sits slightly above last year's $13,382.

That modest increase suggests the HR-V has held value reasonably well for a used compact crossover. If you’re planning to sell later, the combination of steady pricing and broad shopper interest should help support demand, especially for cleaner examples with good history and desirable equipment. Listings that are well maintained and priced near the market low should remain easier to move than rougher examples.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Honda HR-V safe?

The HR-V earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes a rear-view camera, brake assist, vehicle stability assist, and Honda’s ACE body structure. Honda LaneWatch is available as an optional camera-based aid, but the review also notes that the infotainment and LaneWatch systems can demand too much attention while driving, which is an important caveat to keep in mind when you’re evaluating the vehicle’s real-world safety usability.

Should I buy a 2016 Honda HR-V or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 54.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.06% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Sales of small SUVs and crossovers are growing aggressively, and the HR-V fits into Honda’s lineup below the well-respected CR-V.

The bottom line: If you want a compact crossover with strong owner satisfaction, a solid value story, and a familiar Honda driving feel, the 2016 HR-V is the better path. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can still find attractive listings, but you should focus on history, condition, and trim level so you don’t give up too much convenience or peace of mind.
