Why it stands out
The 2016 Honda Civic stands out by moving beyond the old image of being merely thrift-focused and dependable. According to its test-drive summary, this all-new Civic takes bold chances in elevating small-car fashion, refinement, and build quality, and it succeeds. That makes it appealing to buyers who want a compact car that feels more polished and more modern than the Civic’s traditional reputation might suggest.
It also keeps the qualities that have long made the Civic attractive, including thrift and dependability, while packaging them in a very small, fun-to-drive form. Owner feedback reinforces that appeal, with praise for its smooth drive, reliability, impressive fuel economy, stylish design, and high safety ratings. A few owners did note that its height can make it harder to get in and out, which is a useful reminder that its strengths in style and efficiency come with some everyday tradeoffs.

Great car in good conditions, easy to maintain, and runs really well.

The 2016 Honda EX is a wonderful car. The MPG is great combined with the durability of a Honda. I upgraded from a 2002 Civic EX and got my last one up to 199K miles (only performing standard maintenance checkups). 100% worth the value, and I would recommend these cars to anyone.

Love, love, love my Hondas and this one is no different. Drives so smoothly and the hatchback is very handy. Would definitely recommend.

I love the smoothness of the drive. I love the size; I can zip in and out of any parking space. The real deal breaker for me was the left hand lane warning mirror. I do wish it was a little higher from the ground. I do struggle a little bit to get in and out.

How much does the 2016 Honda Civic cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $13,960 |
| Year-Round Low | $13,348.29 |
| Year-Round High | $14,366.90 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $14,369 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.85% |
Prices have softened 2.85% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
With 2,560 listings available, you have a solid amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $13,348.29, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Honda Civic a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Honda Civic earns a 4.86/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its smooth drive, reliability, and impressive fuel economy, and they also like its stylish design and high safety ratings. That lines up with the overview’s focus on a more polished, modern compact car that still keeps the Civic’s thrift and dependability. With 27.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Honda Civic reliable?
Owners rate it 4.86/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback specifically highlights reliability, and it also points to a smooth drive and impressive fuel economy, which usually go hand in hand with low-stress ownership. The expert summary reinforces that this Civic keeps the brand’s thrift-and-dependability reputation while adding refinement and build quality. Honda also includes a broad safety and convenience package on the sedan, which can make day-to-day ownership feel easier.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the Civic’s core reputation and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not worn hard.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Honda Civic?
At 44.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has any signs of prior bodywork or uneven panel fit. Focus on condition details that matter in a compact car: interior wear, electronics, tire condition, and evidence of hard use. If you’re comparing multiple listings, the cleanest example is often worth paying a little more for.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The sedan’s trim ladder runs from LX to Touring, and the base LX is the most stripped-down version. The higher trims add more upscale presentation, with the Touring standing out for chrome accents, polished two-tone 17-inch wheels, full LED lighting, and a more premium cabin feel.
- Powertrain: The base two trims use a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque, while the higher trims move to a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder with 174 hp and 162 lb-ft. A 6-speed manual is limited to the base LX, and the CVT is used elsewhere.
- Safety package: Honda Sensing includes forward-collision alert, auto braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. It’s available on every sedan trim, but for the coupe it’s only on the Touring.
- Infotainment: The system uses an Android-based interface with customizable screens, Garmin navigation, live traffic, pinch-to-zoom capability, Apple CarPlay, and Android Audio.
- Fuel efficiency: The CVT-equipped models are rated at 31 mpg city and 42 highway, while the manual LX gets 27/40.
Which 2016 Honda Civic trim should I buy?
The 2016 Honda Civic is offered in 5 trim levels: LX, EX, EX-T, EX-L, Touring.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the entry point, and it’s the only trim with the 6-speed manual. Choose it if you want the lowest-cost way into the Civic and don’t mind a simpler feature set.
- EX: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it moves you into the turbocharged 1.5-liter engine and a more upscale overall package without jumping all the way to the top.
- EX-T: This trim is for you if you want the turbo engine and more equipment while staying below the luxury-leaning upper trims.
- EX-L: This is the right step up if you want a more premium feel and are willing to pay for it.
- Touring: This is the most fully equipped version, with the strongest visual polish, LED lighting, and the most upscale cabin presentation.
Honda Sensing is available on every sedan trim, which makes even lower trims appealing if safety tech is a priority.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Honda Civic?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 27.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,560 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.85% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 44.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $13,348.29, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Honda Civic's resale value?
The current average of $13,960 sits slightly below last year's $14,369.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, that also means your upside depends more on buying well and keeping the car in strong condition than on expecting appreciation. A clean history and strong maintenance record should matter more when it’s time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Honda Civic safe?
It earns Top Safety Pick+ recognition from the IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA for frontal crash, side crash, and rollover risk.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Honda Sensing is the named driver-assistance suite, and it includes forward-collision alert, auto braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. On the sedan, you can get that package on every trim, while the coupe gets it only on the Touring. The backup camera also offers three views, including a top view and an extra-wide shot.
Should I buy a 2016 Honda Civic or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 27.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 44.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.85% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The all-new 2016 redesign brings a big step up in refinement, build quality, and modern style.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $12,183, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $13,960 average.
- It delivers reliability, safety, fuel efficiency, quality, and value with unusual ease.
The bottom line: If you want the more modern, more polished Civic and you can find a clean example at a fair price, the 2016 is the stronger all-around pick. If your priority is spending less up front and you’re comfortable giving up some refinement and features, the 2015 is the more budget-friendly path.
