How much does the 2016 GMC Yukon XL cost?

Prices have softened 12.77% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 796 listings available, which gives you a meaningful pool to compare prices and equipment.

Is the 2016 GMC Yukon XL a good car?

Generally — the 4.33/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 6.67/10. The model scores 8/10 across Performance and Technology.

Owners consistently praise the Yukon XL for its spaciousness, comfort, and family-friendly utility, especially when you need room for 8 or 9 passengers and plenty of cargo space. The overview also highlights its full-size SUV capability, including serious towing ability and a long list of features, which fits buyers who want a large, versatile hauler. At the same time, the market signal is mixed rather than overwhelming, with 34.2% of listings marked as good or great deals.

Is the 2016 GMC Yukon XL reliable?

Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner summary points to a vehicle that many drivers can count on for spacious, comfortable family use, and the expert cost-effectiveness notes say reliability has been an issue, with the model scoring below average in most categories. The expert driving notes also emphasize that the Yukon XL is built around serious capability and long-distance use, which can be a plus for durability-minded shoppers if the truck has been maintained well. If you’re shopping used, the main ownership risk is that a neglected example could bring expensive repair headaches, so condition and service history matter a lot.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 GMC Yukon XL?

At 54.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a full-size SUV where prior damage, repair quality, and wear can be costly to overlook. Focus on body condition, safety-system operation, and signs of heavy family or towing use, since those are the areas most likely to affect long-term ownership satisfaction. If a listing has incomplete records or visible inconsistencies, move on unless the price clearly compensates for the risk.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base SLE gives you 9-person capacity, front and rear parking sensors, auto headlights and wipers, a rear-view camera, remote ignition, keyless entry, foglights, running boards, roof rails, tri-zone auto climate control, rear privacy glass, power front seats, cruise control, an 8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, a 9-speaker Bose stereo, HD and satellite radio, 5 USB ports, an Aux input, and 4G LTE with a Wi-Fi hotspot. The SLT adds more comfort and convenience, including keyless ignition and entry, a hands-free power liftgate, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated power second row, power-folding third row, power-folding mirrors with auto-dim, a heated power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, driver memory, wireless charging, and ambient interior lighting. The Denali adds a unique chrome grille, 20-inch alloys, xenon headlights, a customizable digital instrument panel, a larger V8 engine, magneto-rheological suspension, navigation, second-row captain’s chairs, an upgraded 10-speaker Bose Surround Sound stereo, and active noise cancellation.
• Powertrain: SLE and SLT models use a 5.3-liter V8 with 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. You can choose rear-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive with a 2-speed transfer case and low-range gearing, and the setup is tuned for serious towing. The Denali uses a 6.2-liter V8 with 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque.
• Safety package: The Enhanced Driver Alert package adds automatic high beams, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and a vibrating seat alert. On the SLT, it also includes rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring. Adaptive cruise with crash-avoidance braking is also mentioned as an available add-on.
• Infotainment: The Yukon XL uses an 8-inch touchscreen with the upgraded IntelliLink system, and it includes Bluetooth, HD and satellite radio, 5 USB ports, an Aux input, an SD slot, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The processor upgrade helps reduce input delay, and Apple CarPlay is part of the 2016 updates.
• Fuel efficiency: The 5.3-liter V8 is rated at 16 mpg city and 23 highway with rear-wheel drive, 15/22 with 4WD, and 18 mpg combined in both setups. The 6.2-liter V8 is rated at 14 mpg city and 20 highway with a 16 mpg combined rating in 4WD, and 15/22 with a 17 mpg combined rating in RWD.

Which 2016 GMC Yukon XL trim should I buy?

The 2016 GMC Yukon XL is offered in 3 trim levels: SLE, SLT, Denali.

Here's the short version:

• SLE: This is the entry point, but it still gives you a lot of equipment, including the 9-person seating setup, parking sensors, a rear-view camera, remote ignition, keyless entry, tri-zone climate control, and the 8-inch touchscreen with Bose audio and Wi-Fi hotspot support. It makes the most sense if you want the Yukon XL’s core space and capability without paying for luxury extras.
• SLT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a big step up in comfort and convenience, including heated and ventilated front seats, a heated second row, a power-folding third row, a hands-free power liftgate, wireless charging, and more advanced safety content. If you want the sweet spot between price and features, this is the one to target.
• Denali: This is the luxury-focused choice, with the larger 6.2-liter V8, upgraded suspension, navigation, second-row captain’s chairs, a more premium audio system, and active noise cancellation. Choose it if you want the most upscale Yukon XL experience and are willing to pay for it.

The safety package is a meaningful upgrade, and the SLT includes more of it than the base trim.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 GMC Yukon XL?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and enough price softness to reward careful shopping.

• Deal availability: 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 796 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.77% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 54.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $17,557, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 GMC Yukon XL's resale value?

The current average of $17,557 sits slightly below last year's $20,128.

That drop suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that resale value may remain sensitive to mileage, condition, and equipment because buyers in this segment are comparing a lot of similarly priced large SUVs. If you keep the truck well maintained and avoid accident history, you’ll be in a better position to protect value when it’s time to sell.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 GMC Yukon XL safe?

The 2016 GMC Yukon XL earns four-star ratings overall and in frontal crash testing from NHTSA, and five-star ratings in side-impact testing.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

The Yukon XL includes the Enhanced Driver Alert package, which adds automatic high beams, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and a vibrating seat alert. On SLT trims, that package also brings rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring. Even with those features, the safety writeup notes that braking performance trails some rivals, so you should pay close attention to the condition and operation of the safety systems on any used example.

Should I buy a 2016 GMC Yukon XL or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 54.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.77% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 adds useful updates like a faster IntelliLink processor, Apple CarPlay, lane-keep assist, auto high beams, and a hands-free power rear liftgate on SLT trims and above.

The bottom line: The 2016 makes sense if you want the updated features and a softer price than newer nearby years, especially if you’re shopping carefully for the right condition and equipment. If you’re more price-sensitive, the 2015 can be worth a look; if you want a newer-feeling package and are willing to spend more, the 2017 is the cleaner upgrade path.
