How much does the 2016 GMC Canyon cost?

There are 579 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2016 GMC Canyon a good car?

Generally — the 2016 GMC Canyon earns a 4.21/5 user rating and a 6.33/10 expert rating, which points to a truck that lands in the middle of the pack overall. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.

Owners repeatedly praised the comfortable ride, good looks, and the balance of power and economy. The Canyon also fits you well if you want a smaller truck without moving up to a full-size model, and the review summary suggests it appeals most when you value everyday usability over maximum size.

Only 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market is selective rather than broadly discounted.

Is the 2016 GMC Canyon reliable?

Owners rate it 4.21/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a truck that many people found dependable in daily use, with praise for its balance of power and economy and its comfortable ride. At the same time, the same feedback also mentions unexpected mechanical issues, so you should treat condition and maintenance history as important parts of the decision.

The expert review also describes the Canyon as structurally strong and robust, which supports the idea that it can feel solid over time. GMC also reduced the powertrain warranty and free service visits for this model year, so used buyers should pay close attention to remaining coverage and prior upkeep.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 GMC Canyon?

At 63.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been used for towing, hauling, or off-road driving. Pay close attention to body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the truck has been maintained on schedule.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Canyon was offered in SL, Canyon, SLE, and SLT trims, and the lower trims are more basic while the higher trims add more comfort and convenience equipment.
• Powertrain: Most Canyons use a 3.6-liter V6 with 305 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic; 4-wheel drive is available, and the truck is described as responsive but willing to rev for peak power.
• Safety package: An optional forward-collision warning system and an available lane-departure warning system are mentioned, along with OnStar automatic crash response; blind-spot information and rear cross-traffic alert are not offered.
• Infotainment: Apple CarPlay is available through IntelliLink, the touchscreen graphics are pleasing, the virtual buttons are large and easy to use, and Wi-Fi access is available through OnStar subscription services.
• Fuel efficiency: The V6 4-wheel-drive truck is rated at 20 mpg in combined driving, and the review notes that highway mileage can improve with the optional tonneau cover.

Which 2016 GMC Canyon trim should I buy?

The 2016 GMC Canyon is offered in 4 trim levels: SL, Canyon, SLE, SLT.

Here's the short version:

• SL: This is the simplest way into the Canyon lineup, so it makes sense if you want the truck’s core capability and plan to keep the budget tight.
• Canyon: The Canyon trim is the best-value starting point if you want a more balanced mix of equipment and price without jumping straight to the higher trims.
• SLE: This is the trim to target if you want the stronger convenience and tech mix, including the infotainment and connectivity features that make the truck easier to live with.
• SLT: Choose this if you want the most upscale feel in the lineup and are willing to pay more for the added comfort and presentation.

The safety content also notes that the available driver-assistance features are optional rather than standard, so you should verify equipment carefully on any used example.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 GMC Canyon?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without expecting deep discounts everywhere.

• Deal availability: 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 579 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.41% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 63.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $17,873, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 GMC Canyon's resale value?

The current average of $18,672 sits slightly below last year's $19,133.

That softer pricing suggests the Canyon has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help if you buy now and plan to sell later. A truck that is priced below last year’s average may be easier to move in the used market if you keep it clean and well documented.

The market also appears to reward trucks with broad appeal and solid owner satisfaction, which can help support demand when it is time to resell. If you maintain the truck carefully and avoid accident history, you improve your odds of holding value better than a neglected example.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.21/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 GMC Canyon safe?

The 2016 GMC Canyon earns a Good rating from IIHS in moderate overlap frontal crash testing, and it earns a three-star rollover resistance rating from NHTSA.

It earns a 5/10 safety score from our experts.

The Canyon offers an optional forward-collision warning system and an available lane-departure warning system, plus OnStar automatic crash response if the airbags deploy. That said, blind-spot information and rear cross-traffic alert are not offered, so you should not expect a full suite of modern driver aids.

The safety testing is also incomplete, which means you should be cautious about reading too much into the available results alone. The rollover rating is the main caveat surfaced in the testing summary.

Should I buy a 2016 GMC Canyon or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 63.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.41% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.21/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• Apple CarPlay arrives this year, making the infotainment setup more useful for iPhone users.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $20,158, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $18,672 average.
• It emphasizes stronger towing and hauling capability in the midsize class.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2016 is the smarter starting point because pricing has eased and the truck adds useful tech. If your priority is maximum midsize-truck capability and you can spend more, the 2017 is the better fit.
