CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Ford Focus
overall

Summary
With 68 currently listed for sale near West Palm Beach, FL and an average price of $7,663, 30.9% of 2016 Ford Focus models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Ford Focus 4.62 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
100.0% of 2016 Focus models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Ford Focus stands out as a refreshed version of Ford’s small car, and the update helped it improve in some key areas even though it is still not perfect. It is a 4-door, 5-passenger small car, and its appeal comes from the kind of everyday practicality that matters in this segment: fuel economy, price, ride quality, and easy-to-use controls. Ford’s “One Ford” approach also gave the Focus a more refined character than the two generations before it, which helped establish its reputation as a strong American small car.
That refinement is a major part of what makes the 2016 Ford Focus distinctive, and it is also why the car is described as a better-looking, more competitive entry in a crowded market. The Focus is positioned against import rivals such as the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, and Hyundai Elantra, which shows how seriously it is taken among compact cars. At the same time, it is not flawless, and the source makes clear that it still has shortcomings even after the refresh.
Owners generally echo the car’s strengths, especially its smooth ride, good fuel economy, and sporty handling. They also tend to appreciate that it feels reliable and offers modern features. Some drivers, however, have noted concerns about engine responsiveness and a gearshift that can be too smooth, which can lead to occasional mistakes when changing gears.

Just bought this car yesterday! It runs super quiet, and shifts incredibly smoothly. Air works so well I had to turn it off for a bit because I got cold. Gearshift is a little tricky, it moves almost too smoothly and makes it pretty easy to shift into the wrong gear by mistake, but I imagine that will be just a case of muscle memory. 55k miles, but looks and drives like new. Overall, very excited to make this car mine!

At 62% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has higher mileage or incomplete service records. Pay close attention to how the transmission behaves, how the engine responds, and whether the car feels smooth under light and moderate acceleration. Since this model is meant to be practical daily transportation, overall condition and maintenance history matter as much as equipment.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes S, SE, and Titanium, and the base S and SE are the trims most likely to leave you wanting more equipment. The hatchback is only offered in SE and Titanium, while the sedan is available in all three trims.
- Powertrain: The standard engine is a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder with 160 hp and 146 lb-ft of torque. An available 1.0-liter EcoBoost turbo 3-cylinder makes 123 hp and 125 lb-ft, and the lineup includes manual and automatic transmission choices.
- Safety package: The backup camera includes virtual guidelines that turn with the wheel, and available parking sensors can help with parallel parking. The large side mirrors with inset wide-angle mirrors are a standout feature because they reduce blind spots.
- Infotainment: The screen in the SE test model was small but easy to read, and Ford’s Sync system adds voice control for the stereo and a Bluetooth-paired smartphone. The main screen would ideally be bigger.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-liter engine with the automatic returns 27 mpg city/40 highway/31 combined. The 1.0-liter automatic returns 28/40/32 combined, and the 1.0-liter manual can reach 42 mpg highway.
Which 2016 Ford Focus trim should I buy?
The 2016 Ford Focus is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SE, Titanium.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the basic Focus experience with the standard 2.0-liter engine and a 5-speed manual. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and are comfortable keeping equipment expectations modest.
- SE: This is the best-value trim because it opens up the most useful mix of equipment, including the available 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine, the optional automatic, and the hatchback body style. If you want the sweet spot between price, efficiency, and everyday usability, this is the trim to target.
- Titanium: This is the most upscale choice in the lineup, with the 6-speed automatic standard and the highest starting price. It suits you if you want the most polished version of the Focus and are willing to pay more for it.
The safety content highlights the Focus’s large mirrors with inset wide-angle mirrors as a standout feature, and available parking sensors can further help with low-speed maneuvering.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Ford Focus?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 25.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,153 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.72% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $8,060, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Ford Focus's resale value?
The current average of $8,509 sits slightly below last year's $8,747.
That price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now but may temper near-term resale upside. If you plan to sell later, the softer current pricing means your future return will depend heavily on mileage, condition, and maintenance history. Well-kept examples should still hold appeal because the model has strong owner satisfaction and practical everyday appeal.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Ford Focus safe?
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The safety content emphasizes practical visibility aids, especially the large side mirrors with inset wide-angle mirrors that reduce blind spots. The backup camera includes virtual guidelines that turn with the wheel, and available parking sensors can help with parallel parking. That said, the small screen makes the camera less convenient than it could be, so you should pay attention to how easy the car is to use in real-world driving.
Should I buy a 2016 Ford Focus or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 25.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.72% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The refreshed design and improved refinement make it a more competitive small car.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $7,561, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $8,509 average.
- It offers a more sophisticated ride and handling character.
The bottom line: If you want the fresher, more refined version with stronger current-market support, the 2016 is the better primary choice. If your priority is saving money up front, the 2015 is the smarter path, especially if you find one with a clean history and solid maintenance records.
