Is the 2016 Ford Focus a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Ford Focus earns a 4.6/5 user rating and a 7.3/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.

That lines up with the Focus’s role as practical everyday transportation, especially if you want a compact car that feels more refined than many rivals. The market also shows 27.4% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the transmission and overall condition match the car’s otherwise strong value story.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Ford Focus?

At 61.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had body damage or shows signs of hard use. Focus on how the car drives, how the controls feel, and whether the interior and exterior condition match the mileage and asking price. Because this model year has a meaningful share of accident history in the market, condition matters a lot.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes S, SE, and Titanium, and the SE hatchback is the recommended body style because it is more useful and looks better. The base setup is simpler, while higher trims add more equipment and a more polished feel.
• Powertrain: The standard engine is a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder with 160 hp and 146 lb-ft of torque. A 1.0-liter EcoBoost turbo 3-cylinder is also available, and it returns strong fuel economy, with the best economy coming from the manual setup.
• Safety package: The backup camera includes virtual guidelines that turn with the wheel, and available parking sensors are a helpful option for parallel parking. The wide-angle side mirrors are a standout feature because they significantly reduce blind spots.
• Infotainment: The screen is small, but the Sync system adds voice control for the stereo and a Bluetooth-paired smartphone. The display is easy to read, though it does not offer much information and can be awkward to navigate.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-liter automatic returns 27 mpg city/40 highway/31 combined, while the 1.0-liter automatic returns 28/40/32 combined. The 1.0-liter manual reaches up to 42 mpg highway.

Which 2016 Ford Focus trim should I buy?

The 2016 Ford Focus is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SE, Titanium.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the basic Focus experience at the lowest starting price. It makes sense if you want the simplest path into the model and do not need extra equipment.
• SE: This is the best-value trim because it balances price, equipment, and flexibility. It is the trim most clearly supported by the data, especially if you want the hatchback body style and a more useful everyday setup.
• Titanium: This is the most upscale standard trim, with more equipment and a higher starting price. Choose it if you want the most polished version of the standard Focus lineup.

The safety content highlights the backup camera, parking sensors, and wide-angle mirrors as useful features to look for, especially if you want easier low-speed maneuvering and better visibility.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Ford Focus?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find decent options.

• Deal availability: 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,184 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 61.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $8,058, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Ford Focus's resale value?

The current average of $8,381 sits slightly above last year's $8,336.

That small increase suggests the Focus has held its value fairly steadily rather than swinging sharply in either direction. For a future seller, that kind of pricing pattern usually points to a market that is stable but not especially fast-moving. If you keep the car in clean condition and can show a solid history, you should be in a better position when it is time to sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Ford Focus safe?

The 2016 Ford Focus earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The safety content emphasizes practical visibility aids rather than a long list of advanced driver-assistance tech. The backup camera includes virtual guidelines, available parking sensors help with parallel parking, and the wide-angle side mirrors are a standout because they reduce blind spots. That said, the small screen makes the camera less convenient to use than it could be, so you should pay attention to how well the cabin tech works for you in real life.

Should I buy a 2016 Ford Focus or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 61.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 refresh brings a more polished feel and improved refinement.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $7,429, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $8,381 average.
• It emphasizes a European-influenced ride and handling with a more sophisticated feel.

The bottom line: Choose the 2016 if you want the more refined version of the Focus and are comfortable paying a bit more for it. If your priority is saving money, the 2015 is the better value path, especially if you find one in strong condition.

How does the 2016 Ford Focus compare to the 2016 Honda Civic?

Our experts score the 2016 Ford Focus 7.3/10 and the 2016 Honda Civic 8/10. The Civic is the stronger all-around choice on paper, but the Focus is much cheaper on the used market and offers a more affordable entry point. The Focus also has a higher accident-free share, while the Civic has stronger fuel economy and more listings overall. If you want the lower-cost option with solid owner satisfaction, the Focus makes sense; if you want the better-rated compact car and can spend more, the Civic is the safer bet.
