CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Ford Focus
overall

Summary
With 95 currently listed for sale near Oklahoma City, OK and an average price of $6,197.00, 13.7% of 2016 Ford Focus models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Ford Focus 4.62 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
70.5% of 2016 Focus models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Ford Focus stands out as a refreshed version of Ford’s small car, and the update gives it a more polished feel without changing its basic mission. It is a 4-door, 5-passenger small car, and the expert test drive data says it has improved in some key areas for 2016 while still not being perfect. That same source also notes that it retains the title of America’s Best Small Car for now, which helps explain why it remained a notable choice in a crowded economy-car segment.
What makes the 2016 Ford Focus appealing is the way it balances everyday practicality with refinement. The summary frames success in this class around familiar priorities such as fuel economy, price, cupholders, ride quality, and easy-to-use controls, and the Focus is presented through that pragmatic lens. It is described as much more refined than the two generations before it, and the user review summary reinforces that appeal by pointing to smooth rides, great fuel economy, sporty handling, and a generally satisfying ownership experience. At the same time, the car is not portrayed as flawless: the expert test drive data says it is still not perfect, and owners mentioned concerns about engine responsiveness and a gearshift that can be too smooth, which suggests the Focus’s strengths are balanced by a few everyday frustrations.

Just bought this car yesterday! It runs super quiet, and shifts incredibly smoothly. Air works so well I had to turn it off for a bit because I got cold. Gearshift is a little tricky, it moves almost too smoothly and makes it pretty easy to shift into the wrong gear by mistake, but I imagine that will be just a case of muscle memory. 55k miles, but looks and drives like new. Overall, very excited to make this car mine!

How much does the 2016 Ford Focus cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $8,595 |
| Year-Round Low | $8,162.45 |
| Year-Round High | $8,993.73 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $8,991 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.41% |
Prices have softened 4.41% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,154 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and conditions.
If you find a listing below $8,162.45, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Ford Focus a good car?
Yes — the 4.62/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 7.33/10. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise the Focus for its smooth rides, great fuel economy, and sporty handling. The review summary also points to a generally satisfying ownership experience and modern-feeling features.
For your use case, that makes the Focus appealing if you want an economical daily driver that still feels polished and easy to live with. The market also shows 22.8% good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile listings to find.
Is the 2016 Ford Focus reliable?
Owners rate it 4.62/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary also describes the Focus as reliable and notes that many drivers feel it is packed with modern features. That said, some owners mention engine responsiveness concerns and a gearshift that can be too smooth, which can lead to occasional mistakes when changing gears.
The expert summary reinforces the Focus as practical, economical transportation for everyday commuting, and the cost-effectiveness notes support that with a value-oriented ownership profile. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the specific car has been maintained well and driven in a way that avoids compounding those drivability quirks.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Ford Focus?
At 60.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had prior bodywork or shows uneven wear. Focus on how the car drives, how the controls feel, and whether the transmission behavior matches what you expect from a healthy example.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Focus is available as a sedan or a hatchback, and the hatchback is the more useful choice. The interior is described as refined and more mature, with common-sense controls that are easier to use than many rivals.
- Powertrain: The lineup includes a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder with 160 hp and 146 lb-ft of torque, plus an available 1.0-liter EcoBoost 3-cylinder turbo with 123 hp and 125 lb-ft of torque. The 1.0-liter can feel strong at lower speeds, but it gets noisy on the highway.
- Safety package: The backup camera includes virtual guidelines that turn with the wheel, and available parking sensors can help with parallel parking. Large side mirrors with inset wide-angle mirrors also help reduce blind spots.
- Infotainment: The screen is small, but the fonts are vivid and easy to read. Ford’s Sync system adds voice control for the stereo and a Bluetooth-paired smartphone, though the screen itself can feel limited.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-liter automatic returns 27 mpg city/40 highway/31 combined, while the 1.0-liter automatic returns 28/40/32 combined. The 1.0-liter with the 6-speed manual reaches 42 mpg highway.
Which 2016 Ford Focus trim should I buy?
The 2016 Ford Focus is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SE, Titanium.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the basic Focus formula with the standard 2.0-liter engine and a 5-speed manual. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but you should expect fewer conveniences than the higher trims.
- SE: This is the best-value trim because it opens up the broader mix of equipment and options, including the available 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine, the 6-speed automatic, and the hatchback body style. If you want the most balanced used Focus, this is the trim to target.
- Titanium: This is the most upscale standard Focus trim, with the 6-speed automatic as standard equipment. It suits you if you want the most polished version of the regular Focus lineup.
The safety content highlights the backup camera, parking sensors, and large mirrors as useful aids, but the small screen remains a limitation to keep in mind.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Ford Focus?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 22.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,154 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.41% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $8,162.45, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Ford Focus's resale value?
The current average of $8,595 sits slightly below last year's $8,991.
That price movement suggests the Focus has softened enough to be attractive to used buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to stay competitive on condition and mileage. If you buy well now, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation pressure later.
The market still shows meaningful demand, and the model’s value-oriented reputation helps support interest from shoppers looking for an economical daily driver. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Ford Focus safe?
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The safety content emphasizes practical visibility aids rather than a long list of advanced electronics. The backup camera includes virtual guidelines that turn with the wheel, available parking sensors can help with parallel parking, and the large side mirrors with inset wide-angle mirrors are a standout feature for reducing blind spots.
One caveat is that the screen is small, which makes the backup camera less convenient than it could be. For used buyers, that means you should pay close attention to how well the camera, sensors, and mirrors work on the specific car you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2016 Ford Focus or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 22.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.41% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The refreshed design and improved refinement make this year feel more polished than earlier versions.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $7,718, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $8,595 average.
- It offers a more sophisticated small-car feel with European-influenced ride and handling.
The bottom line: If you want the more refined and updated version, the 2016 is the better primary target. If your priority is saving money and you’re comfortable giving up some of the refresh benefits, the 2015 is the smarter price-sensitive alternative.
